Learnings from Pilot Initiatives – CSC (Varanasi)
Key learnings taken from BHIM QR Drive at Varanasi- 1/3
Challenges Description
BHIM not allowing more
than ten transactions.
• The BHIM App is currently not allowing more than 10 transactions initiated from QR code within a day,
• Will impact smooth business conduct for merchants.
Contact Numbers synced with Bank
Accounts not active
• The contact number shared merchants at the time of opening bank account, may no longer be in use.
• The contact number linked with bank account must be active for QR activation.
• CSC-SPV conducted BHIM QR code drive in Varanasi from 2nd to 20th January 2018 • The team helped in enablement of merchants on the BHIM app in local markets where they identified some key challenges faced
Steps to be taken
The issue being addressed by NPCI
Merchants to be educated with the online- process of updating contact details
with respective banks
RRBs and Co-operative Banks
not LIVE on BHIM
• Most of the RRBs and Co-operative banks are not live on BHIM
• The major population in Tier II cities are mostly banked by RRBs and co-operative bank .
RRBs and Co-operative banks to be on-board
Challenges faced and learnings taken from BHIM QR Drive at Varanasi- 2/3
Challenges Descriptions
Non- Availability of Debit Cards to
set UPI Pin.
• The Merchant need to generate UPI PIN for initializing/ accepting BHIM QR transactions.
• The availability of Debit Card is compulsory for generating UPI PIN.
Internet Connectivity
• The far flung areas in Varanasi, did not have internet connectivity which is a foremost important condition for initiation of BHIM QR transactions.
Operational Challenges encountered.
Resolution Steps
The Merchants to be informed about PMJDY
and asked to avail RuPay debit card through this
scheme
The merchants can be given options about cheap and reliable medium of internet
connectivity like JIO-FI
Reconciliation of Transactions
• The Merchant reconciliation process with the bank is a tedious task, as informed by the merchants.
• The reconciliation of transactions is of most importance as it is the basis of settlement of amount.
Standard Operating Procedure for
reconciliation to be shared by banks with respective merchants.
Challenges faced and learnings taken from BHIM QR Drive at Varanasi- 3/3
Challenges Descriptions
Hardware/ Software Upgrade.
• The Merchant needs to have upgraded hardware and Software for smooth and hassle free transaction processing.
Localization/ language barrier
• The familiarity with local language needs to be there to explain the Merchants about the acquiring via BHIM QR code.
Operational Challenges encountered.
Resolution Steps
The latest hardware/ software requirement can
be fulfilled by a smart phone
The teams should be accompanied by local individuals for making
effective communication with merchants
Need of awareness
among general public
• The general public is still unaware about the BHIM QR.
• Increased merchant awareness will lead to ease in adoption of new technology and product.
Promotional campaigns to be run in Tier-II cities
for improving awareness
