Marine sustainability in an age of changing oceans and seas
Report by the European Academies‘ Science Advisory Council (EASAC) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission
EASAC policy report 28 January 2016
EASAC – the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council – is formed by the national science academies of the EU Member States to enable them to collaborate with each other in giving expert, evidence-based advice to European policy-makers. It thus provides a means for the collective voice of European science to be heard. EASAC was founded in 2001 at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Drawing on the memberships and networks of the academies, EASAC accesses the best of European science in carrying out its work. Its views are vigorously independent of commercial or political bias, and it is open and transparent in its processes. EASAC aims to deliver advice that is comprehensible, relevant and timely.
Building Science into EU Policy – The National Science Academies of the EU Member States
As the Commission’s in-house science service, the Joint Research Centre’s mission is to provide EU policies with independent, evidence-based scientific and technical support throughout the whole policy cycle.
Working in close cooperation with policy Directorates-General, the JRC addresses key societal challenges while stimulating innovation through developing new methods, tools and standards, and sharing its know-how with the Member States, the scientific community and international partners.

Event of the JRC-EASAC joint report on 'Marine sustainability in an age of changing oceans and
seas'
The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (DG JRC), the European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC), the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon (ACL) and the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) will hold a national event to promote the report on 'Marine sustainability in an age of changing oceans and seas'.
With the aim to promote the joint report of DG JRC and EASAC and thus further support policy-making, a series of events are organised in EU Member States and Associated countries. The approximately half-day events are hosted by EASAC-member and national Science Academies.
The report aims at contributing to the governance challenge of integrating various aspects of marine policy (fisheries management, biodiversity conservation and marine environmental protection) as part of a coherent ecosystem approach. It considers how current scientific knowledge on marine ecosystems and the organisation of science can support an integrated approach to management of the seas. The report looks at a number of key aspects for sustainable development in changing oceans and seas, and particularly highlights the key scientific challenges in addressing these issues. The report presents both recommendations from science for policy development, and recommendations on policy for science.
