Hybrid and electric powertrains are going to be a much more frequent visitor to the independent garage workshop, as sales of these vehicles continue to rise.

The most common question a vehicle technician will ask when thinking about working on

hybrid or electric vehicles is: are these systems safe to work on? The answer to that question is yes,

after you have made a modest investment in tools and equipment. In 2018 there was a

30% increase in hybrid and plug-in vehicle registrations compared to 2017. Given the fact that all car

manufacturers are now going to produce these powertrains, it is clear to see that independent

Inside a Hybrid Battery

The inside workings of a vehicle’s high voltage battery is something most technicians will never get to see. The battery itself is quite a reliable unit but there are often components within the battery compartment that may need repairing by suitably qualified technicians. This battery is from a Toyota Prius generation 2, it comprises of 28 cells, each of 7.2 volts, linked together in series. This delivers a total of 201.6 volts dc and is protected by a 125 amp fuse. The control unit and relays can be seen on the right-hand side.
