promotional methods

Traditional promotional methods: Traditional promotional methods are important to appeal to the older target audience of my magazine - men and women from the ages of 20-34. I intend to promote my magazine using a variation of different traditional methods including TV, radio, newspapers, magazines as well as advertising on buses and billboards. A prime example of traditional promotional methods is buses and billboards. Buses are very effective as they are very large in size and travel around through different cities and towns immediately catching the audience’s eye while walking or driving past. As my target audience is aimed primarily at men who are full time working bus advertisements will play an essential part as the public witnesses public transport everyday – on the way to work or shopping in the street. Following the promotional method of buses, I will also involve billboards as they are very big and are presented to be in high traffic areas all over the country. I also plan on including advertisements on bus shelters as well as on the underground/tube. This will involve escalator advertisements as well as large adverts displayed on platforms of stations as well as on the train itself. I believe this will help my magazine to gave more interest and increase the circulation and readership of the magazine. Another way of promoting my magazine is through television and radio advertising. I will include adverts featuring my magazine on TV to engage the reader and want them to read my magazine. Considering the audience of my magazine is targeted at older readers I believe TV advertisement is a good way to get them involved as after work or on the weekends they will want to sit down and relax while watching TV. Furthermore, the primarily target audience is men and they therefore like to watch football on TV, so having adverts in between will attract their attention and invite them in. As addressed in my proposal, I will also include my own radio station. This will appeal to my target audience as when they are driving in to work they can tune in to the radio station and listen to the latest celebrity gossip, news about the next edition of TMM as well as interviews with star artists relating to my pop/rock genre. Finally, I will place advertisements for my magazine in newspapers. This will appeal to my target audience as they will most likely be interested in reading the newspaper. In addition, newspapers are delivered on a regular basis for news, information and gossip from all over the world. I believe newspaper advertisement will help widen my audience and increase the popularity of my magazine.

Traditional promotional methods:

Traditional promotional methods are important to appeal to the older target audience of my magazine - men and women from the ages of 20-34.

Modern promotional methods:

I will also involve a selection of modern promotional methods ranging from social networking sites to an online website and pages to an app which will be accessible through phones and IPods. I believe these types of promotional are important considering the large increase use of social media and new technology. Following my ideal model for the target audience of my magazine I described the male to have a desire in new technology with the latest gadgets and devices, conveying the viewers of my magazine to be users of social media. I believe it is important to include a selection of promotional methods to appeal to a range of different people within my audience.

The main promotional method that I will incorporate in my magazine is social media. This will include social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram which will help me to reach a wider audience and increase the popularity of my magazine. A Facebook page will give people key details about the magazine and the latest information, which includes important details such as when my magazine is next going to be published. In 2012, facts and statistics show that an estimated 189 million users on Facebook were considered to be ‘mobile only.’ This conveys the success of social media and shows that this is a vital promotional method for my magazine. This will help me reach my target audience as they will most likely have access to the internet on their mobile phones. A twitter page will also be important in the process of my magazine as Twitter will give readers the opportunity to socialise with other readers and express their opinions on my magazine using hashtags. The website will also enable readers to follow the ‘TMM’ page which will give them all the latest information and exclusive gossip. On the TMM twitter page I will also engage readers through hashtags such as a question and answers where I will ask the audience for their questions for an exclusive interview with a pop/rock artist that will be starred in my magazine. I believe this is a key component for the promotion for my magazine as this enables the reader to feel a part of my magazine. Finally, I will create an Instagram page for my magazine. The new, quick iOS – only app enables users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr. I will use this website to publish photos of selected music artists who are displayed in my magazine and exclusive images from the TMM studio. The social media website will allow people to like and comment their opinions on my pictures. I believe this will help benefit the readership of my magazine as after someone has liked or commented on a photo a notification comes up in your bar if you’re friends with the person.

I will also create an official website for my magazine where I will publish information and exclusive gossip featuring my magazine. I will also publish my magazine on the website and create an online print. I believe an online print magazine will be useful for readers as they will be able toaccess this at any time and anywhere. The online version will also include videos as the magazine will be interactive, making the reader feel part of my magazine.

I will also include an app for customers to access on their mobile phones. This would give readers the opportunity to access the app while on the train to work or while eating lunch at the local coffee shop on their lunchbreak. I believe the mobile app will be success as my target audience stereotypically have an interest in technology and the media.

Other:

I will also use the promotional method of ‘word of mouth’. This involves the passing of information from person to person by oral communication – for example someone telling their friend about the new television show they watched last night. This is known as ‘story telling’ and is seen as a common form of word-of-mouth communication.

Firstly, I will hand out leaflets featuring my magazine to passers by to interest the reader and persuade them to want to buy my magazine. Considering the audience of my magazine is targeted towards men and women who work full time I will hand out leaflets at busy and overcrowded train stations as they will most likely use public transport to travel to and from work. The train station Baker Street will be one of my key locations as in 2012 the record numbers of journeys made by passengers to and from Baker Street was 1.1 billion. I will also include other train stations such as Oxford Circus Tube Station as it is regarded to be the fourth busiest station on the network and the busiest without connection to the National Rail service. This will benefit my magazine as a busy train station will help me target a number of customers. The information on the handouts will be quite simple and plain with very little information to attract the reader and make them want to buy my magazine. I believe this will be more effective as masses and masses of information will result in them becoming bored and uninterested.

I will also hand out leaflets outside popular shopping centres in London. For example, the shopping centre known as Westfields in Shepherds Bush. This will be a key location to promote my magazine as the shopping centre is regarded to be one of the busiest in London with an estimated 23 million shoppers visiting the shopping centre last year. This location will also help me to reach my target audience as the shopping centre involves a variety of different shops designed for a range of different ages. Hopefully, by delivering leaflets to different people will encourage people to use the promotional method of word-of-mouth to pass information to their friends.

Secondly, the leaflet for my magazine will be fairly simple and straight forward as I don’t want to overcrowd the page with masses and masses of information as my target audience already work full time and will not have the time to read a full page advertisement on my magazine on their travels to and from work. Furthermore, I believe a straightforward leaflet will be more eye catching and easily recognisable helping to attract my target audience of men and women from the age group of 20-34.
