Considerable thought has been given to thecontent and delivery of the curriculum at both keystages. There are also some innovative features tothe curriculum for younger students. Theseinclude the development of interesting cross-curricular and thematic approach, designed toextend students’ critical thinking skills. Specialevents, visits and activities enrich the curriculumexperiences for all students as they provideincreasing engagement and motivation forstudents of all abilities.

The Academy provides a series of twilight classes and earlymorning classes for a small number of students who wish toincrease their range of qualifications. Wingfield staff and teachers, with responsibilityfor supporting students with specific educationalneeds, maintain close relationships with ourprimary partner schools.

Students requiring extra support within the classroom or in asmall group context have their learning needs assessed as part ofan ongoing review programme within the SEN Code of Practice.

Some students are provided with individual education plans, pastoral plans or behaviour support plans to address their needs. It is recognised that a student may, at any time, have difficultiesthat inhibit learning and the Academy takes responsibility toidentify and address such difficulties.

Students with physical disabilities are integrated into mainstreamclasses as far as possible. Parents are routinely contacted whendifficulties are identified and plans put into place.

Students with other specific needs are also integrated intomainstream classes and are provided with support on anindividual basis or in small groups, depending on circumstance.

Students with special talents and aptitudes are encouraged andchallenged to develop at a pace appropriate to their ability. Westrongly believe in working in partnership with parents/carers.

The Academy is supported by external agencies such as thelearning support and behavioural support services, and networkswith other local schools, colleges and universities to provideadditional opportunity and enhancement for our most ablestudents.

A recent development has been the introductionof 5 Year Team Leaders (YTL). Each YTL isresponsible for ensuring outstanding behaviour, attendance, attitude to learning and progress ismade by the students within their year group. This is a considerable investment for theAcademy, however we truly believe these newappointments will make a fundamentaldifference to the wellbeing and attainment ofstudents at Wingfield Academy.

The Academy provides a safe, orderly and supportiveenvironment for students, parents and staff. The behaviour forlearning policy, which is applied in accordance with all Academypolicies, is underpinned by an effective and well-preparedpastoral care system that clarifies structures for student supportand development.

The Academy operates a linear tutor group system wherestudents of the same group are placed together. At Key Stage 4tutoring is discrete for Y10 and Y11. Tutors are responsible forchecking progress and target setting with students in their formgroups at both key stages. Tutors are the first port of call whenissues arise. At Key Stage 4 students are given the opportunityto apply to be peer mentors and senior students, takingresponsibility for their peers’ wellbeing.

The Academy has trained peer mentors who are able to listento and support those students with social difficulties. Fully trainedstaff are involved in mentoring when appropriate.

Peer mentoring is an integral part of the Academy. Older peerswork with younger students to support aspects of their learningand to help them socialise. Equally they coach in sport andthrough the junior sports award are able to enthuse students inour primary feeder schools to participate in physical activity.

Connexions and Careers services are actively involved with thestudents at both key stages through PSHCE; all students at KeyStage 4 will have personal interviews which parents may attendwith their children. Parents are regularly consulted about theirchild’s progress and potential barriers to learning. A series ofparent consultation evenings, academic reports and interviews, ensure that information regarding student progress iscommunicated at several points throughout the year.
