Pierre Martin Planning Committee

Square de la Rue Burq

75018 Paris, France

Dear Mr. Martin,

Letter of Transmittal

Here is my proposal for a redesign of the Jardin Burq. I believe that this design will greatly improve the

space. It will give children in this area a fun and educational space to be in. I also think that the new park

will do much to improve the area, while adding valuable space to the historic city of Paris.

This proposal presents my ability to achieve this goal. You will find enclosed, a detailed description of the

scope of the design and how much it should cost and how long it should take. I hope that this submittal

will give you the information you requested and that it will convey my enthusiasm for this project. I look

forward to working with you in the future as you continue through your selection process.

Sincerely,

Amber Sunderman AS Landscapes by Design

Executive Summary

Problem Statement Jardin Burq is a park hidden within the city of Paris. The

combination of vandalism and degradation has left this park with

little to offer visitors. With an Elementary school located within a

10 minute walk, this park could be improved to serve this school

and others in the area. With a careful plan and collaboration, this

park can serve as an educational playground and urban oasis.

DesignFor our design, we propose that the current playground be

transformed into an outdoor educational space. This playground

would be used mostly by younger children but it would also be open to other age groups.

When people walk into the playground pavers will lead them through the playground. Engraved in

the pavers will be numbers, shapes and letters with various colors. These will be used to teach/ familiarize

students about math, shapes, colors and so on. These pavers could be

used by teachers to conduct classroom lessons. Teachers could tell

students a math problem or tell them a color to find. The students could

then race to get to the correct number or color first.

On both sides of this path, the playground equipment that is

already in the park will be relocated to accommodate the trail and the rest of the design. At the end of the

path, a large sundial/ presentation area will be located. Around the sundial, several logs will be placed to

provide places for the students to sit. Above the sundial, a fabric shelter will protect the student's eyes

from the sun as they listen to their teacher.

Behind the sundial, two flower beds will provide extra seats. These will be filled

with labeled plants native to France. Teachers can use these flower beds to teach

students about the environment and ecosystems. Students will be able to help their

teachers in the care of these flower beds and this will create a better appreciation for

the area. Having these flower beds in this playground will also help students familiarize themselves with

the plant species and their care.

Goals This design will create a flexible space where students can learn and have fun. This design will also

cause people to be more concerned about the park and take care of it.

Budget and Schedule: This project will cost about $2500 ($1,895.23 EUR) to install. We will use fund raising to reduce the

cost of the project. This design will be simple and will only take about 5-6 months to install.

Statement of the problem Jardin Burq is a small pocket park in the city of Paris. This park is

not in a area that people visit very often. The park is not in good condition because people have vandalized the space. This activity shows both a lack of care and interest in the park.

Jardin Burq does not meet its full potential. Jardin Burq is located within a 10 minute walk from one of the primary schools in Paris, France. I would propose that we promote good activities in the park, such as education, learning, and play. We should turn Jardin Burq into an educational playground to improve the park and provide a nice place people to enjoy. With further development this park could be better used to educate children as they play here.

Experience and Qualifications I am a third-year Landscape Architecture student at NDSU. While in school, I have had the

opportunity to do many designs. One of the most recent designs that I did was a redesign of a large park.

This project was in correlation with the neighborhood’s elementary school. The park had little interest and

looked more like an eyesore than a place for people to go. With careful consideration and research I was

able to design a space that provided a habitat for native wildlife so students could learn about them. The

design also helped to greatly improve the aesthetics of the space making it a nice place for the

neighborhood to gather in and take pride in.

With my interest in education, I have noticed that students learn more when they can participate in

learning activities. I have also seen how beautiful spaces can improve how people treat and care about a

space. The more aesthetic a space is, the more likely people are to treat it nicely.
