Provide a role-based restricted access to information for users

Extend the existing campus-wide-network

Enhance transparency of the existing system

Frequent dissemination of system-generated progress reports to the parents

• Harness the available ICT infrastructure in imparting quality technical education to diploma level students

GOALS


• Ensure anytime/anywhere accessibility to information by relevant stake-holders

• Eliminate the duplication of efforts and data in maintaining records

• Make the process of planning and execution more convenient and transparent

• Reduce the use of papers in routine academic activities

• Establish an effective MIS for the institution

• Deploy a central fault-tolerant database server for academic records

OBJECTIVES


• Provide a role-based access to information to various stake-holders

• Develop and deploy an ERP solution targeted specifically at academic activities

• Exploit the use of intranet-site, web-site and e-mail in information dissemination

• Deploy a dedicated and reliable web-server catering to intranet application

• Campus-wide-network running on fast-ethernet/ gigabit-ethernet

JUSTIFICATION AND RELEVANCE


• Delay-prone and error-prone information dissemination system prevailing in the institute

• Dedicated 2 Mbps lease-line Internet connectivity [wish to upgrade]

• Duplication of efforts and multiple [possibly inconsistent] copies of data

• Lack of transparency in the existing system

• Recent establishment of HP-SWAN will be instrumental in sharing the information and implement e-governance practices

• Availability of sufficient tools/ technologies under open-source/ free under GPL software to implement the proposed solution

• Use open-source and GNU public licensed software and adhere to open standards

APPROACH & METHODOLOGY


• Ubuntu: A very-stable and well-supported Debian-based Linux distribution.

• Emphasis on developing a framework to facilitate the development/ deployment of LRs

• The software proposed to be used in the development process are:

• Apache with PHP: Most deployed web-server (47% market share) known for stability, security, and flexibility. PHP is a simple and light-weight server-side scripting language

• MySQL: Trusted and widely adopted open-source database management system with SQL as its query language

• GIMP/ Inkscape: Open source editors for raster and vector graphics

• Aptana Studio: A complete web development environment that combines powerful authoring tools for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

• Adobe Flex ®: A SDK by Adobe Systems for the development and deployment of cross-platform RIA based on the Adobe Flash platform.

• Extreme programming approach will be more suitable for development

APPROACH & METHODOLOGY


• Install Linux, Apache with PHP module, MySQL etc.

• Collaborate with the institutes with the proven record in the area

• Deploy a high-end reliable intranet web server running on Linux

• Proven Software Engineering principles will be used in the entire process

• Extreme programming approach will lead to the development of a very robust, reliable and accepted software due to instant feedback by the users

• All the activities in the planning, designing and development process will be documented

• A robust, reliable, and accepted software product

EXPECTED OUTCOMES


• Effective MIS leading to good e-governance practices

• Enhanced transparency in the existing system

• Improved response time to various request for relevant information

• Sharing of the developed software will lead to the improved networking with peer institutes

• No inconsistent data will prevail in the system

• The use of paper will be discouraged by using Internet/ intranet as a vehicle for information dissemination
