Quality Improvement Initiative

The program standards and guides materials, which form the basis for instruction in Georgia’s technical colleges, are developed to support industry driven needs. Faculty and local program advisory committees review programs, each year, to ensure the latest technology and employment needs are addressed for the program.

Through the Instructional Faculty Consortium Committee (IFCC) process, programs are reviewed and, if needed, recommendations are made to update competencies found in the program. Given the accelerating changes in technology and the workplace, a major systematic updating of all standardized programs in the technical colleges, with business and industry involvements, is needed.

A joint IFCC Executive Board and State Technical Committee (STC) meeting was held in April 2005 to examine the Medical Assisting, , diploma , program. A working committee composed of instructors and state technical committee members met in July 2005 to discuss and respond to recommendations made by the IFCC Executive Board and STC members.

Currently, the Probe process is being initiated for program revisions recommended by the State Technical Committee . The following sections are included in this Probe document:

a listing of the IFCC Executive Board a listing of the State Technical Committee members a list of the Working Committee members and recommendations made by the IFCC Executive Board and STC

The recommended changes/revisions made in this document apply to the Medical Assisting, , diploma program(s). The deleted items are reflected with a strikethrough while new material is boldfaced. Course number and course title changes are recommended to more accurately describe the course level and content of the affected courses and enhance transferability.

The appropriate sections from the program standards are included, showing recommended revisions, and a revised curriculum sequence illustrates the impact of revisions on scheduling.

State Technical Committee Recommendations

The State Technical Committee made the following 33 recommendations. 32 were endorsed by the Medical Assisting IFCC. Recommendation # 33 was not endorsed. A number of recommendations not listed are Program Guide-level changes which may be made by the IFCC/Working Group.

MAS 101 Legal Aspects of the Medical Office

1. Delete the Death and Dying competency as this is covered in MAS 112

2. Add a competency to reflect HIPAA guidelines to cover the law, its impact, and the consequences regarding patient health information confidentiality.

3. It was recommended that the hours for this class be increased to 3 to cover the new competency.

MAS 106 Medical Office Procedures

4. Remove and/or of MAS 106 and/or BUS 106. It was felt that the information contained in BUS 106 was not specific to medical offices and that students in the program needed the additional information provided by the MAS 106. The substitution will be allowed at the college level.

6. Remove the competency ‘Travel and Meeting’ arrangements as this is not an entry level skill.

7. Delete the competency “Correspondence.”

8. Add a competency “Professional Communication” to include:a. information from current competency “Correspondence”b. competencies from CAAHEP standard c.1.a – dc. message taking skills

9. Change the competency “Medical Filing” to Medical Records as a more inclusive name. Under this standard, delete the reference to microfilming. Reword the last statement in this competency to “Describe automated medical records systems that utilize word processing and computer technology.”

10. Delete the competency “Telephone Techniques” and include the content in the new standard Professional Communication.

11. Increase hours to include additional competencies.

MAS 108 Medical Assisting Skills I

12. Add MAS 103 as a pre/co requisite to MAS 108.

13. Add “age and gender specific” to the competency “Assist the physician in all aspects of a complete physical exam” to read “Assist the physician in all aspects of an age and gender specific complete physical examination.”

14. Move the Electrocardiogram competency to MAS 109 and replace the hours with Medical Office Emergencies and Rehabilitative Procedures from MAS 109.

MAS 109 Medical Assisting Skills II

15. Delete Principles of Radiology and Radiology Safety and use the hours to bring Electrocardiograms in this course

16. Delete “Medical Assistant role associated with the terminally ill patient and death and dying” as this is covered in MAS 112.

17. From the CAAHEP standards, add b.4.h “Maintain medication and immunization records.”

18. The term “risk management” was suggested as a part of the standard that addresses quality control.

19. Move Rehabilitation Procedures to MAS 108.

20. Move Medical Office Emergency Procedures to MAS 108.

MAS 112 Human Diseases

21. It was also noted that the book “Essentials of Human Disease and Conditions, 2nd edition” had no identifying information associated with it and should be removed.

MAS 113 Maternal Child Care

22. As Georgia is the only state in the nation to teach this course, there were multiple suggestions to delete this course. There are no textbooks applicable to this subject for the Medical Assistant.

23. Suggestions for a replacement course included a growth and development through the lifespan course to cover pediatric, perinatal, and geriatric care.

24. Suggested competencies included Health Care, including growth and development, nutrition, pregnancy, post partum, pediatric care, and eldercare. Wellness, to include health risk factors, indigent health needs, community resources and patient education.

MAS 114 Medical Administrative Procedures I

25. Transcription is no longer a CAAHEP standard, so there was a suggestion to delete this course as it is.

26. Recommendations were to move the accounting competencies and practice management software applications to this course but leave some time for medical transcription.

27. To complete this course and MAS 115, all administrative CAAHEP guidelines should be included.

28. The suggested title for the new course is Practice Management.

MAS 115 Medical Administrative Procedures II

29 Industry suggested that we include more about managed care, coding, billing and insurance. With the removal of the financial activities from this course, additional time could be spent on these aspects.

30. The suggested title for the new course is Reimbursement Management.

MAS 117 Medical Assisting Externship

31. Change the competency “Listening” to “Communication.”

32. A suggestion to include the 61 competencies from the CAAHEP standards as a part of the syllabus The Chair indicated that this could not be done as all programs are not CAAHEP accredited.

MAS 118 Medical Assisting Seminar

33. There was a discussion about the “Role play a job interview.” Members of the committee questioned whether this was done in the classroom or on a job site. Instructors present stated that this is done at the instructor’s discretion for their program. There was a suggestion from an advisory committee that this be done at the extern site. This committee suggested that it be left up to the instructor.
