WRITING & POSITIVE WELL-BEING

It is easy to see that young children enjoy using crayons, markers and pencils to create masterpieces. When putting a pencil to paper, we all have the ability to share our thoughts and feelings, unleash our imagination and express our creative side through drawings and words. Expressive writing has the ability to make us feel happier and more insightful, and boosts our positive mental well-being.

Early writing activities give preschoolers the opportunity to

develop their fine motor skills, confidence and self-esteem. It is a beneficial lifelong skill that can be enjoyed anytime and anywhere. As parents, we want to encourage our children to develop a love of writing by being role models.

Here are a few ideas to help your whole family channel their “inner writer” while enhancing their emotional well-being:

• Keep a diary, journal or drawing pad available for when creative inspiration strikes.

• Write little notes to your family wishing them a good day. Slip a special message into your child’s lunch kit or backpack to say how much you love them. Draw a little happy face or picture to make them smile and feel connected to you.

• Create a homemade book about your family. Write one or two strengths or a talent that is special about each person. Add some photographs to make it a cherished keepsake.

• Write down three good things that happened to you each and every day. These can be simple moments that gave you some pleasure or enjoyment, such as a phone call with a friend, hearing a funny joke or a song you like, or getting a big hug from someone special. By taking the time to reflect on these aspects of your day, you will feel happier, more positive and hopeful. As you spend time doing this activity, you will discover it becomes easier to think of all the great things that make an impact on your day. Share these ideas with your family and talk about what they enjoyed about their day.

• Write down the highlight of your week to store in a special thankfulness jar or box. At the end

of the year, you can look back on what you have written. Be proud of your accomplishments!

• Write a thank you letter (or drawing) to those people who have made an important impact on your life. Take the time to graciously and sincerely thank family and friends for their support and love, babysitters for the care they provide, coaches who have taught new skills and mentors who have given you the courage to succeed. Expressing gratitude is not only good manners, it helps us feel happier, more generous, empathetic and connected to others.

• Give your preschooler the opportunity to express themselves creatively by having writing and

art supplies available. Praise their efforts as they start to express an interest in drawing, printing and writing.

In RETSD, we are excited to announce a new writing program called Preschool Pen Pals. We hope your family will join in the fun of this new initiative as well as our FREE parent-child programs this winter.

PRESCHOOL PEN PALS

Do you remember how exciting it was, when you were a small child, to receive a letter in the mail that was addressed to you? Do you remember how important you felt and how you couldn’t wait to read your letter?

Introduce your child, ages three to five, to the joys of reading and writing through RETSD’s new Preschool Pen Pals program. Your little one will enjoy receiving a special letter featuring a rhyme, joke, sticker and seasonal activity to try. It’s easy to participate—just have your child write a short letter or draw a picture to join this program. Have them tell a little bit about themselves, like their age and some of their favourite things.

Please send your letters to:

Kelly Martino Kinder Links Office Joseph Teres School 131 Sanford Fleming Rd. Winnipeg, MB R2C 5B8

To continue receiving letters throughout the school year, your child needs to keep writing back to us each month. Let the letter-writing fun begin!

Help Collect Can Tabs

Be sure to save your can tabs from aluminum pop cans, beverage containers and pet food to support the Tabs for Wheelchairs program. Through the donation of tabs, this program raises funds to purchase brand new, specialty wheelchairs or equipment for children in need. Can tabs can be dropped off at Joseph Teres School, 131 Sanford Fleming Rd., or at any of our parent-child programs to the attention of Kelly Martino, Community Programming Co-ordinator—Preschool. Your help with the initiative is greatly appreciated!

Rhyme Time

I’m a Little Rocket Tune: I’m a Little Teapot

I’m a little rocket And I’m glad Soon I’ll blast off from my pad When I get all fired up Hear me roar Up I go Just watch me soar!

Four Little Stars Four little stars, winking at me One shot off, then there were three Three little stars, with nothing to do One shot off, then there were two Two little stars, afraid of the sun One shot off, then there was one One little star, not having any fun It shot off, then there were none
