Teaching and Learning Update

This term we have implemented some changes to our Englishprogram. The changes have been made after reflection fromteachers attending the Haileybury Study Tours and review ofstudent learning data.

English written assessment will no longer be based on a singlewritten task at the end of the term. This term the focus genreis information reports. Students will be taught through explicitinstruction the generic structure, language features andvocabulary of an information report for the first 5 weeks of theterm. On the Friday of weeks 6-10 students will independentlywrite an information report which will be collected forassessment. This model will provide students with multipleopportunities to demonstrate their writing skills. Teachers willalso be provided with multiple opportunities to providefeedback to students on how they can improve their writing.

Safety Circus

Our Year 3 and 4 students attended this event run by theMackay District Crime Prevention Unit in conjunction with agroup of drama students from CQ University in the last week ofTerm 2.

This dynamic and interactive production captured the attentionof all students embedding three major safety concerns thatface the children of our community today through a dramaticperformance.

These three messages were:

1. Protective Behaviours: Safety Networks and teachingwe can talk with someone about anything no matterwhat it is;

2. Bullying and Bystander Behaviour; and

Curriculum Matters

Report Cards

Soon, you will receive your child’s Semester 1 Report Card viaemail. When you open this document, I strongly encourage youto look closely at the ratings awarded for Effort. These ratingsrecognise how hard your child is working in lessons, how muchthey strive to achieve and reflect their Growth Mindset.

At right is a graph from Semester 1 report cards thatsummarises the Effort ratings in every key learning area forevery student in Semester 1. You can clearly see that thereare minimal incidences where our students need to showimprovement in this area, which is superb.

Should your child’s ratings in Effort indicate that she/he needsattention, please make an appointment to talk with the teacher/s.Working together with a common goal, along with your child’sinput, we can achieve positive outcomes.

Awards

As always, we will recognise studentachievement from the Semester 1 ReportCards. This year, there have been someminor adjustments in that in both Semester 1and Semester 2 will see students receiveCertificates for Excellence and Recognitionfor Significant Improvement.

The assembly on Friday 03 August will commence at 2.10pmso that individual students can receive their certificates. Parentsand carers will be contacted via email beforehand, should theybe able to attend. Please check your emails!

3. Bicycle and non-motorised wheeled recreationaltoys: the wearing of safety helmets and safetyequipment to prevent injury.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

SWPBS – “Fair isn’t equal”

Children are often heard to say that it is not fair that studentswith disabilities, learning difficulties or behavioural difficultiesreceive more support than those children who do notexperience these deficits.

It is important that teachers and parentsredirect children’s thinking that “Fair isn’tequal, fair is when everyone gets what theyneed to achieve a goal”. The argument isequity versus equality and the following illustration is one waythat we can see that some people require more support thanothers, to meet their needs. Would anyone say it was unfair thatthe smaller child was given a box from the taller boy who didn’tneed it? That Johnny was given a bandaid to cover a graze butnobody else in the class was given a bandaid. The sameanalogy can be applied to behaviour support and learningsupport and children who do not require this extra boost needto have empathy for those peers who do require the extrasupport. Sometimes the support may be in the form of extrastaff time or in acknowledgement programs and these shouldnot be seen as being “unfair” but as being equitable.

When your children express that someone is getting moreattention than they are at school, encourage them to reflecton the fact that they are fortunate enough not to require thatsupport in order to achieve and hopefully that will always be thecase.

Ann GardelBehaviour Support Teacher

MUSIC

Why Music?

Music (and singing in particular) helps develop achild’s language skills.

Songs are both sung/spoken and heard. Children do not haveto be able to read in order to learn a song. Because songs arefilled with rhymes, alliteration, and different sound patterns, theyactually celebrate the sounds of language. Singing favouritesongs over and over again helps children become consciouslyaware of sounds and the way we can manipulate them – breakthem apart, blend them together, highlight certain ones andminimise others.

So, the bottom line is: Sing away! Sing traditional children’ssongs, teach your children your own favourite rock or popsongs, make up songs together. You will be instilling a life-longlove of language as well as giving them the foundationnecessary for learning to read. (This was taken from an articlepublished for Scholastic by author, Susan Canizares, who holdsa PhD in language and literacy development

Welcome back everyone to another jam-packed term ofmusical activities and assessment. Remember, to achievebetter results you need to practise.

Samoan Sasa Steps

Well done to the whole school who performed these clappingpatterns on the last assembly of Term 2. It looked very effective. All the children have been learning the steps for the whole ofTerm 2. Yrs 4-6 know Steps 1-9 and the rest of the schoolSteps 1-5.

Whitsunday Voices 2018Our first session was with Mick Elliott, children’s author, kid’sTV presenter and scriptwriter at Nickelodeon. He was theproducer for Camp Orange, Slime Cup and Slime Fest. Mickhad the children in fits of laughter when he told them of the timehe ‘slimed’ Delta Goodrem and watched as the green mess sliddown her face taking her extremely long false eyelashes withit. His latest series, The Turners, is about a 13 year old boyLeo Lennox who is a shape shifter. A shape shifter is one whotransforms into animal-like creatures. Mick interacted with thechildren to get them to imagine they were a ‘shape shifter’ andvisualise what animal they would be. His advice to young writers

was to use your imagination, use real life experiences and tohave the reader wondering what is going to happen next.

The second session was James Phelan an author of 29 novels. His latest publication was a 13 book adventure series called‘The Last Thirteen’. James informed the children that he started‘teeny, tiny’ stories when only 5 years old. His first story wasa recipe for a juice drink because he wanted to own a juiceempire when he grew up. When he was in Yr 5 he travelledoverseas and kept a travel diary detailing what he saw, did andate in great detail. All this added to his writing experience. Hisdream was to be a writer and as a child whenever anybodyasked him what he wanted to be when he grew up it wasalways ‘a writer of books.’ As a writer he bases his stories onfamily and friends as it makes the task easier, he knows theirpersonalities and characteristics and in real life he can get backat them by putting them in his stories.

The last session of the day was a performance by the Sake& Stir theatre company. They entertained us with a productioncalled ‘Chapter Three’. The show demonstrated how storiescan jump off the page and engage the audience withimaginative interpretations of traditional tales. The youngperformers thoroughly entertained us and made us laugh withtheir use of drama and humour.

Thanks to Karen Muller and Carmel Harrison for helping out onthe day.

2/3AW ExcursionOn Wednesday of week 1, 2/3AW went on their excursion tothe Whitsunday Crocodile Safari. The students had a wonderfulday learning about crocodile habitats, lifecycles, theiradaptations and diet. The day started with a train ride throughthe northern wetlands where we learnt some facts about bushtucker and some information about trees that grow in our localenvironment. After some damper and billy tea, we were off onthe boat exploring the Proserpine River. We were introduced toa number of local crocodile’s behaviours and territories. We hadan awesome day and I’m proud to say the students were wellbehaved and excellent role models for Proserpine State School.
