THE AESTHETICS INSTITUTE PHILOSOPHY

Competency-Based

The Aesthetics Institute stands apart from other schools because of its dedication to proficiency. We offer the student much more than just knowledge sufficient to pass state exams; we prepare our graduates to be ready from day one to begin their desired career!

Competency-based programs allow you to graduate once you have completed your theory and proven your ability through testing and practical application.

Competency-based training benefits the students in many ways:

1. Tailored to Your Life: Although the program is not intended as a short-cut to licensing, it does allow you to advance based on your how dedicated you are education. It is advantageous for the single mother that needs to get back into the work-force and can dedicate herself to her studies. It is great for those with related backgrounds to advance quicker through certain areas of the curriculum. The program allows you to advance through the theory at a pace that may be faster than in a non-competency-based program.

2. Held to a Higher Standard: Because of the Institute’s focus on competency-based training, the cosmetology industry expects more from our graduates because they recognize their greater proficiency. To protect that reputation we take great care within the competency-based program to help our students become proficient professionals rather than just graduates.

3. Self-Paced Learning: The format of the school provides a structure to help move you along toward graduation. However, it provides the flexibility to spend more time in areas that are more complicated or in which you would like additional proficiency.

4. Ability-Focused: In most hourly-based programs the curriculum is focused solely on passing tests. We focus on development of abilities so you can pass all needed exams and feel confident as you move into the industry. Our graduates are ready from day one to work in any environment.

5. Specialization: Because of its flexibility, the program allows the student to identify and gain additional experience in a specialized area of the Esthetics program.

Our Esthetics and Nail Technology programs are competency-based.

The State of Oregon requires that the Electrology

program is offered only as a 600-resident hour course.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION FOUR-FOLD LEARNINGAll students begin studying the theory of the program of study. Once they have proven their mastery of the theory they begin performing practical procedures on other students and then the general public. Practical application is critical to preparing students for the industry.

Doctors Mary Brabeck and Jill Jeffrey state “Rote repetition — simply repeating a task — will not automatically improve performance. Effective practice is deliberate. It involves attention, rehearsal and repetition and leads to new knowledge or skills that can later be developed into more complex knowledge and skills.”

So much attention is given to quality practical application at the Aesthetics Institute to ensure the student develops competency upon a strong foundation of skills.

Here students are obtaining practical experience with European Facials:

“To learn anything fast and effectively, you have to see it, hear it, feel it.”

– Tony Stockwell

We recognize that each student learns differently and so we invest heavily in providing materials that are directed at the four different ways people learn: Visual, Auditory, Practical, and Social. This is our four-fold learning system:

Visual:Seeing pictures, graphics, reading, receiving handouts, and viewing instructional videos.

Auditory:Hearing lectures or discussion; listening to presentations.

Practical:Hands on application, working in groups, having physical experience.

Social:Interaction with others in groups and with clients.

These styles are demonstrated in our four-fold system through the following learning tools:

• Live Lectures• Pre-Recorded Instructions• Video Demonstrations• Textbooks• Other Reference Materials• Practical Applications• Lab Work• Group Work

We invest our time and resources back into the Institute because we care about, and believe in, our students and their success.

SPA EXPERIENCEThe point of obtaining an education is so that after graduating you will be prepared to enter the career of your choice. In the Cosmetology industry that education cannot be complete until you have experience in a setting like what you will be using when you graduate. The Aesthetics Institute has created an atmosphere to assist students get that spa experience.

1. Students first learn how to treat clients in our group practical area.2. Then, they use a semi-private treatment room.3. Finally, our students use private treatment rooms. Using a private treatment room creates the environment for students to experienceone-on-one sessions.

Other spa features include a hydro-therapy and body treatment room.

THE AESTHETICS INSTITUTE PHILOSOPHY (cont)Equipment SupportedThe Aesthetics Institute makes re-investing in the school a high priority. This re-investment is reflected in the equipment that supports the instruction. Students use this equipment on a daily basis. We have highlighted some of the equipment used on a daily basis by our students within the program:

Prospective Students Guide

Derma PodThe Derma-Pod is a high performance, dual system microdermabrasion device. Delivers microdermabrasion with or without crystals. The DermaPod satellites transform the microdermabrasion unit into a complete, multi-application, state of the art, age-management center by integrating localized photo-treatment and micro-current technology.

Compu-LiftSurgery-free lifting device that uses low intensity micro currents in 3 phases: stimulation, toning, facilitation of the regeneration.

Photo Light MachineThe Soli-Tone is the gold standard when it comes to treat the skin and deal with all its related problems. A complete, fast, powerful and non-invasive response for all skin conditions.

European Facial EquipmentThrough the use of the euro equipment the technician is enabled to provide more in-depth corrective facial treatments. The brushing unit aids cleansing and exfoliation. The galvanic feature aids in deep pore cleansing and product penetration. The vacuum feature stimulates, and suctions impurities from, the skin. The steamer relaxes, softens, and hydrates the skin. The equipment aids in better preparing the skin for extractions.

Alpha SpaUsed for relaxation, meditation, weight loss, inch loss, and to even combat fluid retention. The Alpha is a dry heat massage system. It plays relaxing music, surrounds you in delicious aromatherapy, all while gently massaging your body while reaching temperatures of up to 180 degrees.

THE AESTHETICS INSTITUTE PHILOSOPHY (cont)Cutting-Edge Curriculum

Our curriculum is built upon a strong foundation that also incorporates the newest techniques and technologies to prepare our students for the greatest success. Our instructors attend conferences all across the country continuing their own education to ensure their Institute keeps up on industry changes.

The top-quality education at the Aesthetics Institute is perfect for those students that expect to go out into the medical field or a spa environment. This education includes the use of a wide-variety of tools, products, equipment, and instruction.

The curriculum at the Aesthetics Institute is based on the techniques, not product lines, for providing services. By focusing on the techniques our graduates are prepared to work in any environment; they are not limited by only one product line and can easily assimilate into the industry as a leader.

Science-BasedThe Aesthetics Institute allows for a scientific based curriculum that goes beyond instructing what products work and teaches how they work. Students are given the opportunity to learn how to make holistic products. A study of histology– a microscopic view of how the skin functions– prepares the Aesthetics Institute graduate to be truly proficient and a leader in the industry.
