1.1.3 Web Facilitation Centre and Website The Web Facilitation Center (WFC) is spread over two rooms that houses 50 computers of the latest configuration andprovidesfreeinternetaccesstostudents.TheWFCisalsoconnectedtotheUniversityLibrarySystemthroughtheUniversity-widenetwork.Itisnotonlyusedforimpartingsoftskillsaspartof curriculumbutalsoforconductingadvancedworkshopsonFOSS,Linux,OER,WikieducatorandEasyNow.

Thecollegehasitsownwebsitehttp://andcollege.du.ac.increatedonanopensourcewebdevelopmentsoftware‘Drupal’,designedandmaintainedbythestudents.

1.1.4 Video Conferencing Facility and Conference Centre Acharya Narendra Dev College is one of the five colleges, selected for setting up of the Video-Conferencing facility bytheUniversity.Aconferencecenterwashencecreatedwithaseatingcapacityof 125.Ithasagiantscreenof dimension 8 x 10 feet, a permanent fixed LCD monitor, computers with internet access and a good public address system.Thecenterthrobswithactivitiesof variousdepartmentsandsocietiesof thecollege.It’saconvenientvenueforthevariousworkshopsthecollegehasbeenorganizingfromtimetotime.

1.1.5 SportsSports are essential not only to promote health, fitness and to identify young talent, but also a means to relax and rechargeafterslogginghardinsidelaboratoriesandrackingbrainsintheclassroom.TheCollegehasarichcollectionof sports goods and fitness equipments including facilities for cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tabletennisandchess.Thesportscommitteeholdsrigorousselectiontrialstoselecttheteamsfordifferentintraandinter-collegetournaments.Thesportsroomwithproximitytothemainplaygroundhasfacilitiesforindoorsportsliketabletennis,chessetc.Itisthehubof allsportsenthusiastsof thecollege.

1.1.6 CanteenWithsupportfromtheUniversityandinassociationwithNationalMissionforBambooApplications,thecollegehasrecentlyconstructedanewcanteenblockhousingakitchen,astudenthallandastaff block.Inkeepingwitheco-friendlystructure,thefurnitureinthestaff blockisalsomadeof bamboo.Alongwiththecanteen,thereisalsoaHPMCstallthatsellshealthfoodsandbeveragesincludingjuices,soupsandconcentratesandageneralkioskwhichcaterstothegeneralneedsof studentsincludingstationeryproducts,andpopulareatableslikeicecreams,momosetc.

1.1.7 Girls Common Room TheCollege has a comfortable room, christened asGirls Common Room (GCR), for exclusive useby femalestudentswherein theyare able to relax, studyandhave informaldiscussions.Dailynewspapers,magazinesandperiodicals are available for leisure reading. Candidates must fill up the common pre-admission form,availableatanyof thedistributionandcollectioncenters notified by the University of Delhi.

4.10. innovATion And enTrepreneurship developmenT Cell Entrepreneurship is closely associated with change, creativity, knowledge, innovation and flexibility - factors that are importantsourcesof competitivenessinanincreasinglyglobalizedworldeconomy.TopromoteselfemploymentwehaveestablishedanInnovationandEntrepreneurshipDevelopmentcell(IEDC)withsupportfromtheDepartmentof Science and Technology (DST). The main focus is to set up an institutional mechanism to help promoteknowledgebasedandtechnologydrivenenterprisesandaimistoconvert‘job-seekers’into‘job-generators’.Lastyear,EDCof thecollegeorganizedtwoEntrepreneurshipAwarenessCamps(EACs).

A mentor feels satisfied only when he sees his apprentice doing well in life. The college faculty is always keen to knowwhereaboutsof its former studentsandhenceAlumniMeetbecomesan integralpartof the lifeof theinstitution.TheAlumniAffairsCommitteeof thecollegekeepsatrackof thealumniandorganizesanalumnimeetwiththeprimaryobjectiveof strengtheningthepillarsof ourdynamicandevolvingcollegebythedirectandactiveinvolvement of its alumni. AcharyaNarendraDevCollege,thoughayoungcollege,hasalreadymadeanameforitself asaCentreof Excellenceineducation,researchandprofessionaldevelopment.This isborneoutbythefact that lastyearwewere listedamongthe‘TopTenScienceColleges’inDelhi,bytheIndiaTodaySurvey.

Inourpursuitof excellencewestrivetocreateasharedlearningenvironmentandofferourstudentsopportunitiesfor experienceand learning. In its journey, toachieve thedreamof providingan invigoratingenvironment forqualityeducation,thecollegeoverthelastfewyears,tookteaching‘beyondtheClassroom’.Coupledwithcreatingan interactive environment in our theory, tutorial and practical classes, the faculty stressed the importance of personality development, confidence building, skill-development and team work - attributes more easily acquired outsidetheformalspaceof theclassroom.

Beinga‘science’collegewerealizedthatstudentshavetobeexposedto‘whatitmeanstopracticescience’-wedecidedtoencouragethemtotakeupsmallresearchprojectseitherinthecollegeoroutsideorundertaketrainingand skill development in any field of their choice. These project sometimes have resulted in students bringing laurels tothecollege-acaseinpointisthe‘YoungScientist2009’awardof theDepartmentof ScienceandTechnologyof theDelhiGovernmentand theother - the ‘YouthDelegate’at theClimateConferenceatCopenhagen.Weareproudof therecent(April2010)stellarcontributionmadebyfoursecondyearstudentsinunravellingtheTBgenome (OSDD project). All students are encouraged to present their research findings in the ‘adult’ world of scientific conferences and symposia - a very great morale boosting experience for them.

Intruequintessentialspirit,teachinginthecollegehasprogressedbeyondtheclassroomandintotherealmof ahigher levelof academics,which translates into frequenthands-onworkshops, e-learningcontentdevelopmentand research participation in areas of national and international significance. 2. ChemisTry in biology: The FuTure oF liFe sCienCes(12th-13thFebruary,2010atIndiaInternationalCentre)

Chemical biology has become the new buzz word in the field of organic chemistry and life sciences, describing anewera in theprogressive integrationand the interplaybetween the twodisciplines.Further,Chemistrymayprovidethebasisfortheunderstandingof manyunexplainedbiologicalphenomenainthenature.Keepingthisinview,itbecomesimportantthatundergraduatestudents,whoareourfutureresearchers,understandbiologyandchemistryasintegratedsubjects,eventhoughthesearetaughtasdistinctdisciplines.

TheNationalsymposiumorganized,focusedontheapplicationof chemistryforaddressingpresent-dayproblemsof biology including diverse fields such as Structural Biology and Drug Discovery, Nano Medicines and Nano devices,GreenChemistryandCleantechnology.

SpecialInvitedtalksbyProfessorB.Jayaram(IITDelhi),Dr.AmitSharma(ICGEB),Dr.AmulyaPanda(NII),Dr.K.C.Gupta(IITR,Lucknow),ProfessorHans-UweDahms(SouthKorea),Dr.RitaKumarandDr.V.C.Kalia(bothIGIB)andProfessorR.K.Saxena(Universityof Delhi,SouthCampus)wereinspirationalandledtoverygoodinteractivequestion-and-answersessions.

There was also a Panel Discussion on ‘Teaching of Science’, where Dr Vasudha Kamat (NCERT) and Dr. RSreedher (CEMCA) emphasized the importanceof integration of ICT tools in education.The other panelistsProfessorAmitabhaMukherjee,ProfessorK.MuralidharandDr.SavithriSingh(allUniversityof Delhi)discussedvariousaspectsof classroomteachingof ScienceintheUniversityandschools.

ThisSymposiumwasuniqueinthatthereweretwosessionsexclusivelyforstudentpresentations-bothoralandposterpresentations-thatprovidedspacetostudentsforgoodinteractionswitheminentscientists.Thebestoralandtwobestposterpresentationsweregiven‘YoungChemicalBiologist’awards.Thesymposiumhadover158participantsincluding70students.

Inkeepingwithourbelief thathands-onlearningisthebestwaytolearn,conductingworkshopsincollegeisanatural and regular activity. Besides academic workshops we’ve even organised one on Video-filming! Academic workshopsgetorganizedduetoseveralreasons:

1. By the Principal Investigators of research Projects: An unwritten rule (nay, understanding) is that allPrincipalInvestigatorswillprovideforsometrainingof undergraduatestudentseitherbyallowingthemtodoprojectsintheirlaboratoriesorthroughconductingtrainingworkshops.Theseareusuallyheldinsummer.

Foss and Linux Workshops:Since thecollegebelieves inopen-source software,weconductworkshopseveryyearforstudentsandteachers(evenfromothercolleges)sothatmoreandmorestudentsandteachersgetintroducedtoFOSS.WealsoconductseveralworkshopswithotherFOSSbodieseg.NRCFOSS,ILUGDwhere we call in experts to deal with specific areas using FOSS.

4. Basic computer skill training: Theseareforfresherswhoarenotcomputer-friendly.SinceitisimportantthatallstudentsareenabledtousetheWebFacilitationCentreandhavebasiccomputerskills,thistrainingworkshopisheldinthemonthof July-Augustfornewstudentswhoregisterforthecourse.

5. open educational resources - Wikieducator: InkeepingwiththecommitmenttowardsFOSSthecollegealsobelievesinopenaccesstoeducationalcontent.Weconducthands-onworkshopsonOER-Wikieducatortoenableteacherstouploadecontentinopenaccessformats.Wehaveconductedtwentysuchworkshopsbothincollege,inDelhiUniversitySouthCampus,inNCERTandsomeschools.Severalof theseworkshopshavebeenconductedincollaborationwithCommonwealthof Learning,Vancouver.

6. easy Now Workshops: Recognizing that teachers need to be enabled to create econtent specially usingmultimediacomponents,CommonwealthEducationalMediaCentreforAsia(CEMCA)helpsimplementan‘EasyNow’packagethatconsistsof easytolearntools forecontentdevelopment.AcharyaNarendraDevCollegehasbenefitted from our association with CEMCA since we haveconductedseveralsuchworkshops.
