Lake Tahoe’s native wildlife is a huge reason why residents and tourists alike are drawn to this beautiful area. However, as the region has developed and grown there has been an increasing amount of human / wildlife encounters that have ultimately resulted in harm to the animals involved.
Black Bears in particular are drawn to human interaction for one reason and one reason only – our food. Bears think about food constantly and once they discover a human-generated food source like left out garbage they will continue to come back for more.
Ultimately, if a bear is allowed consistent access to our garbage it will become habituated to humans and it is at this point that they are very likely to be injured or killed in confrontations with us.
Protecting Area Wildlife, as our name suggests is our key purpose and mission in developing the P.A.W. Box.

We are committed to building a quality trash enclosure that will keep our furry friends safe and allow us to share the beauty of the Lake Tahoe Basin together for years to come.
Responsible Living with Bears – Did you know that an average of 40 bears per year are killed by human means in the Lake Tahoe Basin?
In efforts to help protect the animals in this region, “Bear Proof Trash Enclo-sures” are required on all new construction and vacation rentals in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
This bag of dog food is now bear food.
Happy bears catch their own food in the wild.
