Governments today face securitychallenges onmultiple fronts.Citizen identificationcontrols havebecome tighter, andborder protection is paramount in an era of non-traditional threats.Thales providescomplete systemsand documents thatraise security levelsto new heightswhile respectingcitizen privacy.

Thales SecuritySystems offers a refined system of smart cardtechnology andtravel documentsthat helpsgovernments to assure ID security.

High-end networkand communicationssecurity safeguardssensitive data. The company alsoexercises itsexpertise in NRBCtechnology todetect and identify nuclear, radiological, biological andchemical risks. With decades of experience in all security fields,Thales helpsgovernments toassure the safetyand protection of their territoriesand populations.

For GovernmentProgrammes

Secure, Reliable Identification CardsID systems are basic to thefunctioning of such crucial national activities as citizen, immigrant and driver registration, tax collection and welfare provision.Thales works closely withgovernments the world over toensure that their ID systems aresecure, long-lasting and low-cost.

In numerous countries, for exampleSouth Africa, Thales has provideddriving licence production systemsthat significantly improved thequality and integrity of theinformation encoded on the cards. In China, Thales suppliedcustomised, user-friendly national ID production systems totwo pilot regions. The company’ssystems have already producedmore than 100 million securedocuments worldwide, including“green cards” for the USA, nationalID cards for France and passportsfor the Czech Republic.

Integrating Security at the Louvre MuseumThe famous Louvre Museum houses 35,000 works of art whichare viewed by between five and sixmillion visitors each year – and itsviewing area has grown steadilyover the last 18 years, resulting in a heterogeneous set of securitysystems. Thales unified this multi-layered and diverse securitylabyrinth, rolling out an efficient, single system in early 2003 thatenhanced safeguards for staff and visitors. Now all data andhistory are accessible from a singleserver, and all subsystems can be controlled via a single graphicalinterface, simplifying staff tasks. This new security systemcoordinates field functions, command and control centres andsystem supervision. Thales alsosupplies visitor management andannouncement software, accessbadge production andpersonalisation systems as well as graphical workstations for the museum’s seven securitycontrol centres.

Thales’ completephysical and datasecurity solutionsassess risks and provideimplementation, training andmaintenance.Securitytechnologies rangefrom smart cardsand biometrics to intelligent imageanalysis, whichrecognises unusualbehaviour and alerts operators.

Thales integrates all these elements into turnkey solutionstailored to specific, multiple requirements.

For Corporate andPublic Infrastructures

Access control, video surveillanceand data securityare prime concernsfor both private andpublic enterprises. As infrastructuresbecome morecomplex, managingthese vital systemspresents a greaterchallenge.

Thales draws on decades of experience toensure that theseestablishmentssafeguard theirmost valuableassets. Thecompany providesend-to-end solutionsthat streamline all-encompassingsecurity whileincreasing itseffectiveness.

For GovernmentProgrammes

A Public Key Infrastructure for Safer Transportation

Thwarting NRBC ThreatsEverywhereThe spectre of non-traditionalthreats haunts government today, necessitating greater protection of environments and populations. As evidenced in the Tokyo subwayattack and the U.S. anthraxincidents, coping with nuclear, radiological, biological and chemical(NRBC) threats demands quickrecognition and analysis.

Thales draws on its expertise in defence technology to provideearly detection systems for severalEuropean governments. Followingsuccessful implementation in Franceand Italy, Finland has now chosen to outfit its military force with a Thales-developed NRBCreconnaissance system. The Finnisharmy’s armoured vehicles use theNRBC system to collect air samplesfor on-site threat analysis. Thales is also developing mobile biologicalthreat-detection solutions for the French Ministry of Defence’sProcurement Agency (DGA). The devices will seek atmosphericanomalies in order to detect anyvariation. Such in-field analysisallows operators to determine amajor threat quickly and monitor itsevolution in real-time.

The European Union has adoptednew securityregulations relatingto driving and resttimes forprofessional truckdrivers. The newregulations requirethe progressiveintroduction ofdigital tachographsstarting in August 2004.

The French Ministryof Transport is one of the first EU ministries to implementtachographs, andhas chosen Thalesto develop thesystem. The new regulations are designed to improve workingconditions forprofessional truckdrivers, reduce therisk of accidentsand combat fraud.

Thales SecuritySystems hasdeveloped a public keyinfrastructure (PKI)tachograph whichresponds to theserequirements. Thenew system willrecord and storespeed and activitydata onto personalcryptographicsmart cards. Thissolution willgenerate morethan one millioncertificates fortachographmanufacturers, transportcompanies andtraffic controlforces, andconforms to digitaltachography needs for theEuropean Union.

Guaranteed Protection for Société Générale Thales has equipped Société Générale’s 17 French sites withcomprehensive supervision, accesscontrol and video surveillance systemsto guard the banking giant’s staff and premises. Software andequipment – such as fixed, mobile and dome cameras linked to CCTV –detect intrusion, while intranet pre-announcement manages visitors.Access control involves approximately 2,000 ID readers processing 20,000 personnel and about 600 visitors per day. Thales alsomanages the bank’s car parks and provides intercom and buildingmanagement interface.

The Thales solution for SociétéGénérale analyses security systemprocedures and data, constantlychecking, maintaining and improvingits operations. In this way, the bank’semployees, visitors and businesstransactions are constantly under ever-improving protection.

Singapore Subway: Putting Safety FirstThe Singapore subway carries more than one million people every day. Thales has been instrumental in providing securitysince the subway’s opening in 1987 when the company installed the firstcolour CCTV system ever used in thisenvironment. Today the system has over1,000 cameras installed, ranging from 20 to 40 cameras per station, via whichlocal operators can monitor platforms andhalls. The live pictures are transferred viaan optical fibre bus, linking all stations tothe main control room. Platform images incolour can be transferred directly to drivercabs through a 24 GHz microwave link, allowing the driver to verify that gates andplatforms are clear prior to departure, thus assuring passenger safety. Othersubway systems that use Thales’ analogueand digital technology include Caracas,Taipei, Chicago, Lille, Toulouse and Rennes.

ManagingVessel Trafficin the Port of LondonThe Port of Londonis one of the busiest British ports with over 12,500 commercialvessels per year. To ensure a saferand more efficientport infrastructure,Thales SecuritySystems is providingthe integral radio-
