Introduction Organizations are increasingly using VMware® and Microsoft® Hyper-V server virtualization as part of their IT plans to increase responsiveness and drive down costs. HPE customers need efficient, high performing, and reliable backup systems that are easily integrated into these virtual environments and deliver the flexibility and cost profile. HPE StoreOnce provides a disk-based data protection platform, while addressing data growth by utilizing data deduplication for efficient backup data retention in virtualized and physical environments.

The HPE StoreOnce Virtual Storage Appliance (VSA) extends the StoreOnce family to enable cost-effective data protection for virtualized environments. By deploying HPE StoreOnce in a software-defined form factor, customers can increase flexibility and cut storage costs compared to deploying purpose built appliances. HPE StoreOnce VSA is a virtual appliance that delivers fast, efficient, and scalable backup. A virtual appliance increases deployment flexibility and reduces costs through optimized use of storage resources, compute resources, rack space, and power.

Now HPE customers can benefit from HPE StoreOnce capabilities by installing HPE StoreOnce VSA in Veeam environments. Veeam Backup & Replication and HPE StoreOnce together provide customers with an integrated backup and recovery solution. HPE StoreOnce VSA is built on the same StoreOnce software as the physical HPE StoreOnce appliances making it easy for Veeam users to deploy the HPE StoreOnce VSA in backup environments and utilize the same advanced data services as physical appliances.

The following are key recommendations for using HPE StoreOnce VSA and Veeam Backup & Replication:

• Enterprise remote office/branch office (ROBO): HPE StoreOnce VSA is ideal for centrally managed enterprise ROBO with local backup and offsite backup copies. Branch offices can send backup data to a local HPE StoreOnce VSA target with data deduplication optimized copy to a remote HPE StoreOnce appliance located at a data center or data recovery (DR) site.

• Increase backup speed: Using larger Veeam Backup & Replication block sizes can significantly improve backup speed.

Note A throughput performance enhancement specifically for Veeam Backup & Replication is integrated into HPE StoreOnce Backup software version 3.11.1 and later. For more details, consult an HPE pre-sales or support representative.

• Reduce required resources: A weekly full and daily incremental backup schedule uses less backup server and HPE StoreOnce VSA host server resources during backup than a daily full backup schedule. Backup data will require about the same amount of space on the HPE StoreOnce VSA appliance for each backup schedule type.

• Instant VM Recovery: Veeam Instant VM Recovery can immediately restore a VM into a production environment by running it directly from the backup file stored on an HPE StoreOnce VSA Common Internet File System (CIFS) share. This helps improve recovery time objective (RTO) and helps minimize disruption and downtime of production VMs.

Building a data protection solution using Veeam Backup & Replication and HPE StoreOnce VSA appliances enables fast and reliable recovery of data from cost-effective backups. For business environments with remote offices, or a disaster recovery (DR) site, Veeam Backup & Replication and the HPE StoreOnce VSA make an effective combination to replicate data to a central data center or remote facility. This document describes the benefits and best practices for using HPE StoreOnce VSA and Veeam Backup & Replication to protect server data.

Technology overview HPE StoreOnce appliances—key features and benefits HPE StoreOnce appliances deduplication: store more data on disk HPE StoreOnce appliances deduplication reduces the disk space required to store backup data sets without impacting backup performance. Retaining more backup data on disk longer enables greater data accessibility for rapid restore of lost or corrupt files and reduces downtime.

Deduplication ratios are strongly influenced by two factors—data change rate and backup data retention periods. Low data change rates and data retained for longer periods of time yield higher deduplication ratios.

Deduplication-enabled replication HPE StoreOnce deduplication is the technology enabler for HPE StoreOnce deduplication-enabled replication, which allows fully automated replication over low-bandwidth links to DR site, giving ROBO and small data centers a cost-effective DR solution for the first time.

Rapid restore of data for dependable, worry-free data protection HPE StoreOnce appliances offer immediate access to backups for rapid restores. HPE StoreOnce appliances deduplication allows more data to be stored closer to the data center for longer periods of time, which offers immediate access for rapid restores.

Automate, simplify, and improve the backup process HPE StoreOnce appliances automate the backup processes, allowing reduced time spent managing data protection. Implementing hands-free, unattended daily backup is especially valuable for environments with limited IT resources, such as remote or branch offices.

HPE StoreOnce VSA systems can back up multiple servers simultaneously via standard Ethernet to a disk-based solution instead of sequentially to a tape drive or autoloader—meaning that substantially reduced backup windows are possible.

HPE StoreOnce VSA The HPE StoreOnce VSA extends the HPE StoreOnce portfolio with the agility and flexibility of HPE StoreOnce delivered as a virtual appliance, removing the need to install dedicated hardware, and leveraging the advantages of server virtualization to provide a very cost-effective solution. The flexibility and economics of HPE StoreOnce VSA make it especially suitable for ROBO environments and backup as a service (BaaS) providers.

Packaged as a VMware or Hyper-V virtual appliance, the HPE StoreOnce VSA is available with maximum licensed usable capacities of 4 TB or 10 TB. Capacity is configured in 1 TB increments as needed up to the maximum capacity.

The HPE StoreOnce VSA is currently supported to run on VMware 5.0, VMware 5.1, VMware 5.5, or Windows Server® 2012 R2 Hyper-V virtualized servers. Once installed and powered on, it is used by backup and recovery applications as a backup target, in the same way as physical HPE StoreOnce appliances and delivers the following benefits:

• Exceptional value: Install into existing virtualized environments for software-defined deduplication backup storage. The HPE StoreOnce VSA license to use (LTU) includes HPE StoreOnce Catalyst capability, for seamless data movement across the enterprise, and replication capability to enable it to be a replication target and three years HPE support for peace of mind.

• Easy to manage—locally: HPE StoreOnce VSA can be managed using a local graphical user interface (GUI) or the HPE StoreOnce Enterprise Manager (SEM) application. The local GUI is the same, well-proven interface used to manage the HPE StoreOnce Backup appliances and provides a consistent experience for enterprise-wide deployments.

• Easy to manage—across the enterprise: For users with multiple HPE StoreOnce appliances and multiple HPE StoreOnce VSAs, SEM enables centralized management. Through the centralized SEM, up to 400 HPE StoreOnce appliances and HPE StoreOnce virtual appliances can be managed across multiple sites. As well as advanced monitoring, reporting, forecasting and trend analysis, SEM can be used to deploy and configure HPE StoreOnce VSA appliances.

HPE StoreOnce CIFS shares and Veeam Backup & Replication HPE StoreOnce VSA offers Catalyst, Virtual Tape Library (VTL), and NAS interfaces for backup applications. For Veeam Backup & Replication, CIFS shares are used as backup targets. These offer data deduplication and deduplication-enabled replication, which are ideal for VM backup and recovery. HPE StoreOnce CIFS shares are configured as Veeam backup repositories using the CIFS share network path. Once a backup repository is created for an HPE StoreOnce CIFS share, the share can be configured to use advanced Veeam features such as synthetic full backup, and Instant VM Recovery with vPower. For incremental backups, HPE recommends using Veeam Backup & Replication forward incremental backups. Reversed incremental backups should not be used on HPE StoreOnce.

Veeam Backup & Replication and HPE StoreOnce VSA An important part of protecting virtual machines (VMs) is maintaining a consistent set of backup images. Veeam Backup & Replication provides data protection for VMware and Hyper-V virtual environments. VM backup images can be consolidated to a single HPE StoreOnce VSA leveraging 10GbE speed. HPE StoreOnce VSAs integrated with a VM data protection strategy include regular backups to maintain a consistent set of VM images for recovery purposes.

Veeam Backup & Replication environment

Component Description

Veeam backup server A Windows®-based physical or VM on which Veeam Backup & Replication is installed. The Veeam backup server fills the role of the “configuration and control center.”

Veeam backup proxy An architecture component that sits between the data source and target and is used to process jobs and deliver backup traffic.

Backup repository A location used by Veeam Backup & Replication jobs to store backup files, copies of VMs, and metadata for replicated VMs. A backup repository is a folder on the backup storage.

HPE StoreOnce VSA and enterprise backup The HPE StoreOnce VSA can be deployed in a traditional enterprise LAN backup environment where there is a need for separate backup systems. For example, setting up both VMware and Hyper-V environments so each has its own HPE StoreOnce VSA is a cost-effective way to maintain separation of backup data between the environments, while taking advantage of the virtual infrastructure to efficiently backup VM images. And by using the replication features of the HPE StoreOnce VSA, it is very easy to copy VM images to a remote location for increased data protection. Figure 1 illustrates how Veeam Backup & Replication and HPE StoreOnce VSA might be deployed in a typical VM backup and recovery configuration.

HPE StoreOnce VSA and Enterprise ROBO HPE StoreOnce VSA is ideal for centrally managed enterprise ROBO protection with local backup and offsite backup copies. Branch offices can back up VMs with Veeam Backup & Replication to a local HPE StoreOnce VSA with data deduplication copy to a remote HPE StoreOnce appliance at a central data center and DR site.

This solution offers the following benefits:

• Reduced backup window: A local HPE StoreOnce VSA device in branch offices enables fast backups.

• Backup application flexibility: Users may utilize Veeam Backup & Replication to back up to an HPE StoreOnce CIFS share set up as a Veeam backup repository, and then migrate data to an HPE StoreOnce iSCSI VTL by utilizing the Veeam backup copy feature.

• Reduced risk of data loss: An offsite copy of branch office backup data further reduces the risk of data loss.

• Offsite consolidation: Offsite copies of backup data can be consolidated to an HPE StoreOnce 6000 or other large appliance.

• Centrally managed: All sites can be managed from a central location using SEM.

Capacity planning The required storage capacity for backups depends on many factors including the following:

• How much backup data is written and retained

– Size and number of protected VMs

– How many backups are retained (recovery points needed)

– Type of backups (full, incremental, synthetic full)

• How much the data is compacted (deduplicated and compressed)

– The type of data

– Rate of change between backups

– Configuration options such as block size and parallelism

– The efficiency of the deduplication and compression

Note For the purpose of this document, the data rate of change refers to the amount of data that would be contained in an incremental backup as a percentage of a full backup. A 100 GB full backup with a subsequent 5 GB incremental backup before the next full backup would be a 5 percent rate of change.

An administrator may desire two weeks of VM images stored on an HPE StoreOnce VSA appliance for quick recovery access. Data deduplication provides more backup space without increasing the physical capacity of the backup device; however, a dynamic environment with changing data affects the backup data deduplication ratio.

Figure 3 shows a lower rate of change correlates with higher deduplication ratios when backing up VM images to an HPE StoreOnce VSA share using Veeam Backup & Replication.

In performing these tests, HPE used Red Hat® Enterprise Linux and Windows VMs that contained customer representative data sets with realistic structure and content. For the chart below, data was updated between each backup until the desired rate of change was reached.

Weekly full and daily incremental backups Many backup environments use a weekly full and daily incremental backup schedule. Some characteristics of full and incremental backups are:

• Full backups include both the changed and unchanged data in a data set.

• Incremental backups include only changed data in a data set. Veeam Backup & Replication provides two methods for incremental backups:

– Reversed incremental backup (not recommended for backup to HPE StoreOnce) During the first run of a backup job, a full backup of a VM is created. VM data is stored in a full backup file. During reversed incremental backup, changes are “injected” into the full backup file to rebuild it to the most recent state of the VM. A reversed incremental backup file is created containing data blocks that are replaced when the full backup file is rebuilt. Therefore, the most recent restore point is always a full backup, and it gets updated after every backup cycle.

– Forward incremental backup (recommended for backup to HPE StoreOnce) During the first run of a forward incremental backup, VM data is stored in a full backup file. At subsequent backups, it only gets changes that have taken place since the last performed backup (whether full or incremental) and saves them as incremental backup files next to the full backup.

• Changed data does not deduplicate as well as unchanged data, so incremental backups do not deduplicate as well as full backups.

• Incremental backups are usually much quicker than full backups and use fewer resources, which has less impact to the backup server, network, disk storage device, and HPE StoreOnce appliance.

• End-to-end data compaction is greater for schedules that include incremental backups when compared with daily full backup schedules. The result is greater space saving on the HPE StoreOnce appliance even though deduplication ratios, measured on the StoreOnce appliance, are lower for incremental backups.

• Full backups and reversed incremental backups enable faster and simpler recovery than forward incremental backups or a mix of full and forward incremental backups.

Note For increased deduplication ratios, it is best to organize backups so that like data is written to the same backup target. Where possible, best practice is to configure backups for each data type and direct them to different shares, libraries, or stores. However, note, HPE StoreOnce appliances do not deduplicate across backup targets; each share, library, or store is an independent deduplication domain.

Capacity planning usage models As an example, a VM environment with four VMs with 75 GB of data each and a 14-day backup data retention requirement can have several HPE StoreOnce appliance usage models. Usage models change based on parameters such as the following:

• Backup schedule type

– Daily full image backups deduplicate well but use more server and HPE StoreOnce compute and bandwidth resources during a backup.

– Weekly full with daily incremental backups do not deduplicate as well but use less compute and bandwidth resources.

– The end-to-end data compaction for weekly full with daily incremental backup schedules may be better than daily full backups.

• As shown in figure 3, lower change rates result in better deduplication ratios and require less HPE StoreOnce storage.

• Sequential or simultaneous backups—multiple backups running simultaneously typically have better backup throughput but may reduce HPE StoreOnce deduplication ratios. While testing Veeam Backup & Replication, HPE did not notice an improvement in backup throughput when backing up multiple VMs simultaneously from the same backup job.

Note Data compaction refers to the removal of redundant information from a backup set prior to storing on a backup device. Incremental backups, deduplication, and compression are all methods for removing redundant data from a backup set.

Figure 4 compares five usage models for VM backups to an HPE StoreOnce VSA with the following common characteristics:

• VMs size (4 VMs): 300 GB

• Backup schedule: Daily

• Retention period: 14 days

Each usage model shows the overall size of the backup data without deduplication vs. the size of the data on the HPE StoreOnce VSA after deduplication.

HPE StoreOnce VSA and Veeam Backup & Replication deduplication options Veeam Backup & Replication offers compression and deduplication options. When using an HPE StoreOnce VSA target with deduplication, HPE recommends the following when selecting Veeam backup repository options and creating a Veeam backup job:

• Backup repository deduplicating storage compatibility should be set to “Decompress backup data blocks before store.” Decompressing the data blocks before storing allows the HPE StoreOnce VSA to achieve better deduplication ratios.

• In the backup job advanced settings, storage deduplication should be deselected. The HPE StoreOnce VSA will achieve better deduplication ratios if the data is not previously deduplicated by Veeam. If this option is selected, there will likely be very minimal additional deduplication by the HPE StoreOnce VSA. Deselecting Veeam deduplication will reduce the backup proxy load and allow the HPE StoreOnce VSA to achieve better deduplication ratios.

• In the backup job advanced settings, the compression level should be set to none as Veeam compressed data does not deduplicate well.

Other factors that affect backup throughput and data deduplication Some configuration options that may have an effect on backup throughput rates and data deduplication ratios:

• Block size: The block size chosen for backup may affect throughput. With Veeam Backup & Replication, block size is controlled by the values specified in the backup job advanced settings storage optimizations. The following options are available:

– WAN target—256 KB block size

– LAN target—512 KB block size

– Local target—1024 KB block size

Generally speaking, larger block sizes result in faster throughput and have minimal effect on data deduplication ratios. Figure 5 illustrates the effect of varying block sizes on backup throughput.

• Data at rest encryption: The HPE StoreOnce VSA supports the option to encrypt the backup data before data is written to disk. This feature is supported for all protocols. Enabling this feature is done at the time of object creation and may affect performance. Figures 6 and 7 illustrate the effect on throughput performance and deduplication ratios when data encryption is enabled on a CIFS share.

Disaster recovery with HPE StoreOnce VSA Most companies recognize the importance of a robust data protection strategy. Enterprise-level customers are likely to invest in DR site. In addition, many companies, large and small, are protecting remote offices where untrained IT staff are expected to manage a daily backup process—generally involving the changing of physical tapes, which is a process prone to human error.

Low bandwidth replication (LBR), available on HPE StoreOnce VSA, offers the solution to both of these problems by allowing local VM backup data to be replicated between sites in a reliable deduplicated form. This provides the following flexibility in VM data recovery:

• VMs can be recovered at the HPE StoreOnce source site (original VM location).

Instant VM Recovery Veeam Backup & Replication also offers vPower technology for both VMware and Hyper-V VM recovery, which provides the ability to:

• Immediately recover a failed VM (Instant VM Recovery).

• Verify the recoverability of backups by starting and testing VMs directly from VM backups.

Veeam Instant VM Recovery can immediately restore a VM into a production environment by running it directly from the backup file stored on an HPE StoreOnce VSA CIFS share. This helps improve RTO and helps minimize disruption and downtime of production VMs.

When Instant VM Recovery is performed in a VMware environment, Veeam vPower technology is used to mount a VM image to an ESXi host directly from the backup file. There is no need to extract the VM from the backup file and copy it to production storage, so a VM can be restarted from any restore point in a matter of minutes.

To finalize Instant VM Recovery, with the proper configuration as described in Veeam documentation, VMware Storage vMotion can be used to migrate the restored VM to production storage in the background without downtime.

Copy to HPE StoreEver Tape for archive HPE StoreOnce products are excellent solutions for regular and daily backup; there is no longer a need to store daily incremental backups on tape. However, HPE still recommends periodic copy to tape as the most cost-effective and robust solution for long-term archival of data to meet regulatory requirements of offsite storage for DR where data replication is not an option. Copy to tape is executed using backup and recovery management software such as Veeam Backup & Replication.

HPE StoreEver is:

• Economical: Efficiently protect and retain rapidly growing data—with support for linear tape-open (LTO), HPE StoreEver Tape offers significant cost, energy, and footprint advantages.

• Reliable: Protect and retain data over the long term—with enhanced HPE StoreEver Tape reliability and extreme durability, essential but less frequently accessed data can be stored with confidence.

• Secure: Enable a vital “last line of defense”—with hardware-based data encryption and removable storage that are offline to threats, HPE StoreEver Tape is a highly reliable safety net and an optimal platform for long-term digital archive.

Veeam Backup & Replication enables the ability to archive backup files stored in backup repositories to tape. For instance, a backup file stored on HPE StoreOnce VSA could be copied to HPE StoreEver Tape media. During the VM backup to tape job, the backup server or proxy server reads the backed up data from the HPE StoreOnce source, transfers the data, and writes it to the HPE StoreEver target media.

Recommendations • VM daily full backups vs. weekly full with daily incremental backups

– Daily full backups deduplicate at a much higher rate than weekly full with daily incremental backups but require more ESXi server and HPE StoreOnce VSA processing resources.

– The HPE StoreOnce Backup VSA data storage required is roughly the same for each type of backup schedule over an extended time period.

– Daily full backups deduplicate better but weekly full with daily incremental backups send much less data for deduplication processing.

– If daily full backups are not required, HPE recommends a backup schedule that includes incremental backups to reduce the resource load required for VM backup.

• Increasing VM backup throughput to the HPE StoreOnce VSA—The HPE StoreOnce VSA is able to obtain higher overall throughput when larger backup block sizes are used.

• DR

– HPE StoreOnce remote replication offers a LBR solution to and from remote sites, which is ideal for VM DR.

– HPE StoreOnce VSA is ideal for centrally managed enterprise ROBO with local backup and offsite backup copies. Branch offices can send backup data to a local HPE StoreOnce VSA target with data deduplication optimized copy to a remote HPE StoreOnce appliance located at a data center and DR site.

– Instant VM Recovery with Veeam vPower and HPE StoreOnce VSA CIFS shares provides a method to bring VMs online almost immediately, which helps improve RTO and minimize disruption and downtime of production VMs.

• Tape archive—HPE StoreEver Tape combined with a Veeam Backup & Replication VM backup to tape job is an economic, reliable, and secure method for archiving data from HPE StoreOnce for long-term data retention.
