SWMA S&T 2018 Annual Meeting Report S&T - 1 SWMA Specifications and Tolerances (S&T) Committee 2018 Annual Meeting Report Mr. Jason Glass, Committee Chair Kentucky INTRODUCTION The Specifications and Tolerances (S&T) Committee (hereinafter referred to as “Committee”) submits its Report to the Southern Weights and Measures Association (SWMA). The Report consists of the SWMA Agenda (NCWM Carryover and NEW items) and this Addendum. Page numbers in the tables below refer to pages in this Addendum. Suggested revisions to the handbook are shown in bold face print by striking out information to be deleted and underlining information to be added. Requirements that are proposed to be nonretroactive are printed in bold- faced italics. Presented below is a list of agenda items considered by the SWMA and its recommendations to the NCWM Specifications and Tolerances Committee.

Temporary failure and permanent damage of electronic systems areoften caused by electrical overstresses such as lightning,

electromagnetic pulses from nuclear weapons, and switching ofreactive loads. Protecting industrial, military, and consumer systemsfrom failure is critical; and until the publication of this volume, the

related literature was scattered throughout journals, patents, conference proceedings, military reports, and elsewhere. This

convenient text presents practical rules and strategies for circuitsdesigned to protect electronic systems from damage by transient

overvoltages. Because many circuits operate from AC supply mains, protection of equipment operating from the mains is also discussed. The five-part treatment covers symptoms and threats, fundamentalremedies, types of protective devices, applications of protectivedevices, and validation of protective measures. Specific topicsinclude damage and upset, environmental threats, standard test

waveforms, and properties of nonlinear transient protection devices, plus protective applications related to signal circuits, DC power

supplies, and low-voltage AC mains.
