After the oxygen we breathe and the water we drink, protein is absolutely the most needed

and most essential nutrient. Recent investigation has identified that the amount of protein that

we require during periods of weight loss and illness are significantly more than at other times. The body must receive adequate calories at all times.

It is the purpose of this booklet to report and explain this new information, particularly the

new conditions for the role of hydrolyzed collagen when used in weight loss and for many other

instances associated with lack of proper nutrition, commonly called PEM (Protein Energy

    Malnutrition).

We hope this information will clarify the use of collagen protein hydrolysate, as well as the

benefits which may be derived from its use as a fabulous source of the valuable amino acids thatmake up collagen protein and the valuable nitrogen that they provide.

Protein is a unique nutrient that performs important and diverse functions in our bodies.

Amino acids, which are the basic building blocks protein is made of, must be present in adequatequantity and quality to provide for new tissue formation during growth and development. This

need for protein to make new tissue is also found when new tissues must be formed to heal

wounds and fight infections or replace losses resulting from stress, weight loss or injury. Proteinis an integral part of all of our tissues, especially our muscles. If adequate amounts of the amino

acids which our body uses to make its protein are not available, growth and repair and

maintenance of our muscle tissues cannot be maintained.

Aside from growth, the normal body protein turnover, that is the amount of protein-

containing tissue breakdown, is about 4% per day. This normal process results in a net loss of

approximately 30 grams of protein in the form of its component amino acids every day. Theseamino acids which are lost through the bodys normal metabolic processes each day must be

replaced by our diet. If they are not replaced, it is virtually impossible to maintain our muscletissue. When the right amount of them are replaced, the body uses them to maintain and rebuild

our muscle tissues at a rate equivalent to the amount of breakdown that is taking place. If this

balance is not maintained, wasting away of our muscle tissues, commonly called lean body mass, will take place. This is of particular concern during weight loss. As you can see, it is very

important to make sure your diet contains adequate amounts of protein. One of the best ways we

know of is to supplement with Amino-Sculpt Collagen. This high quality form of collagenprotein hydrolysate is a source of amino acids in liquid form which is easily absorbed and

    utilized by the body.

The thousands of enzymes that are the catalysts for all of the metabolic processes in ourcells are made of protein. In addition, protein is an essential component of numerous hormones

that regulate our body processes. Also, protein, particularly that contained in our body cell mass,

is increasingly catabolized (broken down and used up) during periods when the amount ofcalories that are consumed in the diet are less than the amount used by the body. Put another

way, if we dont receive adequate amounts of amino acids from the protein in our diet, we go

into a state where we are actually losing protein in the form of our lean body mass (muscle). Most importantly, our heart is made up of muscle tissue. Limiting calories without insuring

adequate protein can not only be unhealthy, but dangerous as well. This is another example of

how important it can be to supplement with Amino-Sculpt Collagen to insure you are receivingthe amino acids you need.

Obviously, it is extremely important that we maintain adequate levels of protein in our diet,

digest it properly and absorb it into our system so our body can use it. We should discuss

another very important part of the protein story how our body is actually structured or heldtogether because protein plays a major role here, too. In the next chapter we will discuss

collagen, which is one of the most important proteins.

Collagen is one of the most important proteins in our entire body, hence anyone interested ingood health and nutrition should have an understanding of this protein. So lets start with our

foundation our bones. They are the framework upon which all is built. Ligaments are another

type of connective tissue that attach two bones and consequently hold our joints together. Thentendons, another similar but different type of tissue, attach our skeletal muscles to our bones. Allof these tissues, the bones, ligaments, tendons and even the skeletal muscles themselves, are

basically made up on protein. One of the most predominant proteins is called collagen.

In essence, collagen protein is the cement that holds everything together. Not only does it

hold components of our skeletal muscular system together, it is also the primary mortar

between the bricks of all of our smooth muscle tissues such as our blood vessels, digestive tract, heart, gallbladder, kidneys and bladder to mention a few. Are you beginning to understand just

why the support of collagen is so important? It is even the major component of our hair, skin

    and nails.

We cant be healthy if we dont maintain our bodys collagen. If we dont, we seem to

virtually fall apart. To a great extent, this is what happens as we age. For instance, our skin gets

thinner and is easier to damage. Our hair gets lifeless. Our skin sags and wrinkles as gravityworks against us. Our skin, tendons and ligaments become less elastic. We develop stiffness of

joints and just don't feel as good. The primary reason for all of this is because we have less

    collagen.

Collagen is extremely vulnerable to destruction by free radicals. This is why supplementing

with antioxidants can be of great value in protecting and also helping in its production. VitaminC is well known to be very important in collagen production. Vitamin B6 is important in the

production of all protein and so are other nutrients and antioxidants. One thing for certain is thatyour body must be supplied with the amino acids necessary for the manufacture of essential

collagen. And, the best source we know of is Amino-Sculpt Collagen.

Collagen itself is a natural protein, composed of twenty different amino acids. Our bodies

contain relatively large amounts of it and so do all animals. However, it is not a component ofplants. Overall, your body makes use of over twenty different amino acids for the production of

collagen and for other uses as well. Ten of them cannot be made within the body and these arereferred to as essential amino acids. The others are important also, but as long as the body is

functioning properly it can manufacture them from other nutrients in the diet.

Collagen protein is distinctive because it contains high levels of the non-essential amino

acids. It contains the specific amino acids Glycine, Proline, Hydroxyproline and Arginine.

These particular amino acids are necessary for proper function, growth and repair of the

muscle tissues in the body. They provide energy and nitrogen needed for protein production in

our body. They are of specific value because they provide a lot of nitrogen. Keep in mind that

all protein contains nitrogen. As a matter of fact, protein cannot even be formed without

nitrogen because nitrogen is a part of all protein.

Enzymatic hydrolyzation enhances absorption and assimilation the way Mother Natureintended it to be. This process makes collagen protein as close as possible to being 100%

    physiologically available.

We mentioned earlier that not only do you have to consume protein in your diet, but you

also have to digest it so that it can be absorbed into your bloodstream to be circulated to all areas

where it is needed. This can be a major problem for many people, because so many are not able

to adequately digest many of the protein-containing foods. This is particularly true with theelderly and people with numerous illnesses.

Many people do not realize how much effort is expended by the body to digest our foods.

The process of digestion actually requires more energy than any other basic metabolic process. One reason we have a tendency to feel tired after a large meal is that most of our energy

production is being used for digestion.

Proteins are large molecules and are best thought of as a long chain. Proteins are nothing

other than twenty different amino acids all linked together. What makes one protein differentfrom another is the mixture of the amino acids it contains and the order they are linked together.

Visualize each of the links of the chain as an amino acid. The links are hooked together to make

a long chain. This long complex molecule of virtually hundreds and thousands of amino acids

linked together is too large to be absorbed through the intestinal wall. Therefore, they cannot getinto our bloodstream and transported to where they are needed in the body.

This is the purpose of digestion to break these large molecules down into smallercomponents called peptides and amino acids. A peptide is a few amino acids linked together,

whereas a protein is many amino acids linked together. The proteins are broken down in our

stomach and intestines by digestive enzymes that are produced by our pancreas. These enzymesare called proteolytic enzymes because they lyse or breakdown proteins. The three well

known enzymes produced by our stomach and pancreas that digest proteins are pepsin, trypsin

and chymotrypsin. Two well known proteolytic enzymes occur in the plant kingdom bromelain in pineapples and papayotin (also known as papain) in papaya fruit.

Another name for this process of digestion or breakdown of food components is

hydrolysis. The attempt here is not to use a lot of big words making this explanationcomplicated, but it is important to understand just what Amino-Sculpt Collagen is and why it is

so important in total nutrition. It is a uniquely prepared, enzymatically hydrolyzed collagenproduct. Put another way, it contains collagen protein that has been hydrolyzed by natural

enzymes to its component peptides and amino acids. The valuable amino acids that it contains

are much more easily assimilated by the body. A collagen hydrolysate is collagen that hasbeen hydrolyzed. Amino-Sculpt Collagen is a high quality collagen hydrolysate that has

been enzymatically prepared to make the collagen amino acids most available to the body. No

other collagen formula we are familiar with utilizes this enzymatic hydrolyzation (they use

    acid hydrolysis):

Nitrogen balance is a term that is used by doctors and researchers to indicate the amount ofprotein breakdown (degradation) in the body relative to the amount of protein synthesis or

production there. Your body has to make the protein that it incorporates into its muscles and

other tissues. It cannot incorporate whole protein from other sources. Every species is made upof their own characteristic proteins. The protein of cattle, for instance, is somewhat differentfrom the protein in your body. On the other hand, the protein in cattle is made of the same

twenty or so amino acids that yours is. The difference is that the amino acids are arranged in

different orders and in different amounts.

The process is quite simple. We eat the whole protein contained in a beefsteak. It is then

digested (hydrolyzed) in our stomach and intestines into its component peptides and amino acids. These are then absorbed into our blood stream and are put back together in various organs of our

body in the way that is needed.

As we work, our muscles break down. And, free radicals cause the breakdown of collagenprotein. Some protein is broken down when the body needs calories for energy, if enough

calories are not included in the diet. All of this protein breakdown must be offset by new protein

synthesis in the body. In other words, new protein must be formed to offset that which is lost.

As we have mentioned, protein contains nitrogen and when protein breaks down, nitrogen is

excreted. By measuring the amount of nitrogen excretion, we can tell how much protein is beinglost. Conversely, when you eat protein, you are also receiving nitrogen. Nitrogen balance is

when the amount of nitrogen going in verses that which is going out is the same. When more

nitrogen is being eliminated than is taken in, you are in negative nitrogen balance and yourmuscles are literally wasting away. To avoid the wasting away of your bodys muscle tissue and

collagen, it is necessary to prevent negative nitrogen balance from occurring, especially duringweight loss and body building.

It is important to maintain positive nitrogen balance in the body at all times. When you

do, your rate of protein synthesis equals your rate of degradation. In order to maintain your

muscle tissue (lean body mass), you must maintain positive nitrogen balance. If you dontconsume enough calories and adequate amounts of amino acids, you can go into negative

nitrogen balance. This means your body can become cannibalistic and actually breakdown theprotein in your own muscle tissues. This happens when you restrict calories too much,

especially when you drastically limit your intake of protein.

    NNPPUU ((NNeett PPrrootteeiinn UUttiilliizzaattiioonn))

Net Protein Utilization (NPU) is a term that describes the biological value and digestibilityof a protein. In other words, how much of the protein is truly available to the body to be

    digested, absorbed and utilized.

When a dietary substance has a high NPU it means that it is more efficiently utilized by thebody. Amino-Sculpt Collagen has a high NPU (the highest compared to other sources of protein

such as whey, milk, egg, or soy), therefore, its amino acids are more easily utilized. This also

means that by supplementing with it, it is much easier for the body to maintain a healthy positivenitrogen balance. The high concentration of four amino acids in Amino-Sculpt Collagen

Arginine, Glycine, Proline and Hydroxyproline are responsible for its high NPU.

The net result of supplementing with Amino-Sculpt Collagen is a more vigorous uptake of

dietary protein. Therefore, your own bodys protein is spared or protected. When you are

restricting calories, exercising a lot, have illnesses, disease, or subject the body to stress, your

body will actually use some of its own lean body mass (protein). By making certain that youconsume adequate quantities of amino acids with a high NPU, you actually help protect against

the cannibalization of the body tissues you do not want to lose.

This whole process is usually referred to by doctors and researchers as protein-sparing. By

supplementing with a high quality source of amino acids like Amino-Sculpt Collagen, you not

only provide your body with a great energy source, but help spare your lean body mass as well.

As we have discussed, proteins must be hydrolyzed or broken down before they can beabsorbed and utilized by the body. Amino-Sculpt Collagen is made by using enzymes to

predigest collagen protein to what is called a collagen hydrolysate. This process actually

simulates the natural process by which the body breaks down protein in the digestive tract. Theend result is a mixture containing free amino acids and a few small peptides. These smaller unitsof protein provide improved absorption.

Enzymatically hydrolyzed protein has been used by doctors in clinics and with hospitalizedpatients for over twenty years. Collagen hydrolysate has shown its ability to spare protein

degradation in the body. This kind of supplement spares the bodys own lean body mass

(protein). The understanding of this technology was so unique and so important that severalpatents were issued to Arnold Gans, R.Ph. in 1977:

For the use of enzymatically hydrolyzed collagen protein for preventing nutritional

deficiency (U.S. Patent No. 4,0215,650). For providing high protein nutrition orally from an enzymatically pre-digested protein (U.S.

Patent No. 4,042,688). For treating nutritional deficiencies during heart muscle wasting, diabetes, hypoglycemia,

gastroenterology, skin conditions related to lipid cell glycogen and keratin deficiencies and

alcoholism (U.S. Patent No. 4,053,589). For preventing overweight conditions by the enteral (oral) use of enzymatically hydrolyzed

    protein (U.S. Patent No. 4,042,687).

It can be seen from the graph above that:

When protein is limited in the diet, nitrogen balance improves at first (up to point B), but

then levels off with decreased energy. With a diet high in nitrogen producing amino acids, we see increased nitrogen balance plus

    increased energy.

Lean Body Mass is a term used by doctors and researchers who specialize in fitness,

exercise and weight management. It is also a term that you hear at the gym where trainers and

body builders congregate. To them, the amount of lean body mass is important, because theirlean body mass includes the amount of muscle tissue they have is also indicative of their strengthto compete against other body builders and weight lifters. This is great for them, but what does it

    mean to you?

A major portion of our lean body mass is muscle and that means body protein. The

amount of lean body mass you have is a good indication of your body fat percentage as well.

After you take into account the water contained in our bodies, the percentage of lean body massplus the percentage of body fat has to add up to 100%. So as one goes up the other must go

    down.

The amount of our lean body mass is critical because it not only includes our structuralcomponents, but also the tissues that line the vital parts of the body such as the heart, lungs,

bladder, liver and eyes. The other principal body constituent, namely fat, is not healthy if it is

out of balance with lean body mass. We need body fat for insulation and to act as a reserveenergy source, but when too much is present it becomes only dead weight for us to carry around.

Doctors and trainers evaluate our condition, as far as our body composition is concerned, bydetermining what percentage of our total body weight is fat and how much is lean body mass.

The average American male today is about 23% body fat, while most experts agree the ideal

percentage is about 15%. It is normal for women to have a slightly higher percentage. Theaverage woman today has about 32% body fat and the ideal percentage is considered to be about

    22%.

The only way you can maintain your lean body mass is to make certain that you consume, digest and absorb enough amino acids to replace the protein tissues that are used by your

metabolic processes. The only way you can build more lean body mass is to exercise. And, you

must have an ample supply of these amino acids present (from your diet) for the muscle proteinand collagen protein to build. Either way dietary amino acids are important. Amino-Sculpt

Collagen is the ideal way to supplement your diet with high quality, easily absorbed amino

acids to help your body maintain and/or build its lean body mass.

Overweight is a major nutritional problem in most all the developed countries around theworld today. Statistics show that individuals that weigh less have longer life spans, more energy

and usually feel better than those people who are overweight. Overweight precipitates such

conditions as heart and kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, complications ofpregnancy and psychological problems, to mention a few. Several factors contribute tooverweight such as glandular malfunctions, malnutrition, emotional tension, boredom, habit,

excessive eating, poor selection of foods, eating at the wrong times and lack of adequate physical

    activity.

In may seem unbelievable, but it is very likely that malnutrition is the main cause of

overweight. When there is inadequate intake of all essential nutrients, fat is not efficientlyburned. Fat is burned only if sufficient energy is produced. Energy production depends upon the

presence of just about every nutrient. Protein may be the most deficient nutrient for many

    people.

Proteins are needed for production and proper functioning of many energy producing

enzymes in our body. Protein itself cannot be effectively used without several other nutrients.

To insure our bodies are able to utilize protein properly, we must make certain we consumeadequate protein as well as most nutrients. In order to lose weight safely, a person must set a

sensible long range diet plan that includes all essential nutrients and minerals.

Many theories have been promoted over the last two decades. The calories dont count

theory is one. Yet we still live in a nation where three out of every four adults are overweight.

One thing is clear we gain weight if our bodies assimilate more calories than we burn, and welose weight if we burn more calories than we assimilate. In other words, we must stay in caloric

balance. The two factors involved in staying in caloric balance are:

Reducing the amount of calories we assimilate

andMaintaining or increasing lean body mass.

We already stated that to increase lean body mass we have to exercise, but remember to

either build or maintain we must have enough amino acids in our diet. The reason is that lean

body tissue (muscle) is the only tissue where calories are burned.

When we lose weight, a large percentage of the actual pounds lost come from our lean body

mass. Some experts state that the amount of lean body mass lost is as much as 40% (if not more)of the total weight actually lost. So then, if you lose 50 pounds, 40% of it or 20 pounds could be

lean body tissue. You can see how important it is to make certain that you have plenty of protein

sparing amino acids in your system while you are losing weight.

Equally important is your long term weight management, after the initial phase of weightloss. If you lose your weight improperly by losing too much muscle, it is much easier to gain the

weight back. This is because you now have less muscle tissue in your whole body, and therefore

you also have less ability to burn those calories. If any excess calories you consume are not

burned, they are stored as body fat. Put another way, you can consume the same amount ofcalories as before you lost your weight that would keep you at a constant weight and now gain

weight rather than maintain. This is commonly called the yo-yo effect and is another example ofthe importance of maintaining your lean body mass. To do it, you must consume the right

amount and kind of amino acids.

Recent studies strongly suggest that the addition of proteins that have high concentrations of

the four nitrogen producing, non-essential amino acids Arginine, Glycine, Proline and

Hydroxyproline help preserve lean body mass. By supplementing with Amino-Sculpt Collagen,

you help provide what is called the Protein-Sparing Effect. This helps spare or protect againstbreakdown of lean body tissues by the supplemental amino acids contained in Amino-Sculpt

Collagen standing in its place. This is absolutely vital for healthy weight loss and successfullong term weight management.

All the protein that is consumed in our diet must be broken down in the intestines into its

component peptides and amino acids. These amino acids are then absorbed through the smallintestines and transported to all of the tissues that need protein either for maintenance or to

perform their functions such as the production of enzymes, hormones, etc.

Some of the excess amino acids, those that are not used for tissue maintenance or the

production of metabolic products, are changed by the liver into glucose. A small amount can be

stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen. Glycogen can be used later as a source of short ormedium term caloric energy. Any additional glucose above the normal glycogen storage

    capacity becomes stored as fat.

Glucose is more commonly referred to as blood sugar which the body uses as basic energy

or fuel under normal conditions. The body breaks down excess amino acids into either glucose

for energy or fat. The various amino acids which are metabolized into glucose are called

glycogenic, while the amino acids which are converted into fat are called ketogenic. As you cansee, amino acids are valuable energy sources as well as essential building blocks to our body.

In addition to providing necessary amino acids to be used in most all body structure, and for

the production of enzymes and many hormones, an important goal of supplementing with

Amino-Sculpt Collagen hydrolysate liquid amino acids is to inhibit your body from making itsown protein a major source of caloric usage and thereby creating a negative nitrogen balance.

By utilizing Amino-Sculpt Collagens enzymatically digested high nitrogen containing amino

acids, only lean body mass will be preserved during weight loss or at any other time. This samemetabolic condition exists at all times. It would be a shame to think of Amino-Sculpt Collagen

as only a weight loss aid. Even though its so valuable in this regard, it has far reaching positive

implications as a worthwhile nutritional supplement for optimum health in many ways.

Along with its superior NPU rating, collagen protein is very dominate in four non-essential

amino acids that are nitrogen donors: Glycine, Proline, Hydroxyproline, and Arginine. In fact,

unlike other protein sources, these four amino acids make up 67% of nitrogen producing aminoacids in collagen protein. These amino acids have many uses, such as maintaining and growinglean body cell mass and are detailed as follows:

    GGLLYYCCIINNEE

Glycine is the simplest non-essential amino acid. It is called glycine because it resembles

the sweet taste of glucose (blood sugar) and glycogen (liver starch). It is required for optimumgrowth.

Glycine can be used in several ways by the human body. For example, it is a glycogenic

amino acid. That is, it can build up glycogen levels in the liver and muscles.

The relationship of glycine and total body chemistry is very complex. Glycine helps in the

manufacture of DNA, glycerol and various phospholipids, cholesterol conjugates, skin proteins, collagen and glutathione. Needless to say with all these metabolic activities glycine is a key

    metabolic agent.

Glycine is also a hypolipidemic agent, which means it helps to lower triglycerides and more

than likely cholesterol as well. In one study, a thirty gram loading dose of glycine decreased

cholesterol by about five percent and triglycerides by about twenty percent. It is possibly a

useful adjunct in supplying amino acids which are thought to be valuable supplements for those

with the joint discomfort of gout. Following a thirty gram glycine loading, the serum uric acidlevel decreased by thirty-three percent in the first few hours. However, further studies are

    needed to verify statistical significance.

Glycine joins zinc as one of the most prevalent nutrient ingredients used in supporting the

bodys normal healing process, especially for wounds. Collagen protein, because it is such a richsource of protein including the amino acids glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and arginine, is

regarded very worthwhile for wound healing in humans. It is the riches source of dietary

glycine available, and in its predigested form as in Amino-Sculpt Collagen, it is also the best

way known for glycine to be absorbed.

It is known that diets high in glycine and proline, with arginine present, contribute to woundhealing. In studies of experimental animals, wound healing was best accomplished bysupplementing with glycine, proline and arginine combined (Harvey et. al., 1984).

Diets supplemented with arginine and glycine in experimental animals result in increasednitrogen retention, i.e., better absorption of amino acids. Many hypotheses exist to explain the

effective role of glycine and arginine in wound healing. It has been shown that arginine and

glycine are both required for optimum growth and for proper creatinine synthesis in experimentalanimals (Seifter et. al., 1978). Glycine and arginine act as natural detoxifying substances as well.

Arginine detoxifies ammonia from the body, and glycine detoxifies benzoic acid by conjugating

it to form hippuric acid. It is also believed that glycine may play a part in the repair of muscle

    fibers.

The natural detoxification action of benzoic acid by glycine is important and should not be

overlooked because benzoate derivatives are very common in numerous food additives. Glycine

actually conjugates benzoic acid to hipuric acid, which is excreted. Other claims for

detoxification by glycine relate to its ability to stimulate the synthesis of glutathione, the mostimportant antioxidant detoxification system of living things including man.

Gelatin protein contains up to thirty-three percent glycine and has been useful in wound

healing for years. Gelatin products have been used for many years as a glycine supplement to

help the growth of hair and nails. Nails are especially high in keratin, which is a biologicalsubstance also rich in glycine. Unfortunately excessive estrogens make nails peel, and the best

supplement is adequate zinc and manganese along with protein high in glycine.

Glycine is a simple non-essential amino acid. It is involved in the bodys production ofDNA, phospholipids and collagen, and in the release of energy. It is a very safe amino acids,

with no known toxicities, even in large amounts. Studies with up to thirty grams of glycine havenot produced any observable side effects whatsoever.

Proline and hydroxyproline are two of the more important component non-essential amino

acids of collagen hydrolysate. Believe it or not, proline is exceeded in concentration in body

fluids in normal adults only by glutamine and alanine as free amino acids.

Collagen, which accounts for between twenty-five and thirty percent of the bodys total

protein, is the major reservoir for both proline and hydroxyproline. Collagen contains morehydroxyproline than proline and is the only significant body pool of this valuable amino acid.

Actually, about a half of the bodys total proline is contained in collagen and it is the highest

percentage of all amino acids in collagen. Hydroxyproline plays its primary role in the structure

and maintenance of bone and connective tissue. The synthesis of hydroxyproline in the body issolely from proline. Hydroxyproline is converted from proline by hydroxylation only after

proline gets into the amino acid chain that form body proteins.

Proline is an essential bridge in the relationship of protein and carbohydrate metabolism.

Interests in proline have centered around its possible ability in supporting wound healing in theway that glycine and arginine do. Proline has been postulated to increase collagen production,

which is essential to wound healing. The idea is that proline, highly concentrated in collagen, is

needed as wounds heal, because they heal by the deposition of more collagen. This makes sensebecause the accumulation of collagen in certain tissues in the body, particularly liver, directly

parallels the concentration of proline in the same tissues.

In summary, proline and hydroxyproline are non-essential amino acids that are highly

concentrated throughout the whole body. The important collagen protein in our body is the

major reservoir for these two important amino acids. Proline can also be synthesized in the body

from either of two other amino acids, ornithine or glutamic acid.

    AARRGGIINNIINNEE

Arginine is conditionally essential to most mammals and humans. That means that it can beessential, but not in all cases. What about arginine in the human body, which usually can make

this amino acid? Zieve, at a 1984 American College of Nutrition Conference in Chicago,

summarized as follows: Conditional deficiencies (humans) of arginine occur in the presence of

excessive ammonia, rapid growth, pregnancy, trauma, or protein deficiency and malnutrition.

Because arginine deficiency can occur under many conditions, this amino acid is likely to

have numerous uses as a valuable supplement. Milner of Cornell University has shown thatarginine is also essential to the transport, storage and excretion of nitrogen. Deficiencies or

imbalances of essential amino acids will result in increased urea production and excretion. Thus,

any amino acid deficiency increases the demand upon the available supplies of arginine. Adeficiency of arginine is expected to increase urea formation. Increased urea synthesis, resulting

from increased amino acid deamination, is limited by the internal and external supplies of

    arginine.

Arginine has a key role in regulation of protein metabolism throughout the body, and is an

indispensable amino acid for optimum growth. It is key to successful nitrogen metabolism

because of its role in the urea cycle. Arginine is also important in muscle metabolism becauseagain, it provides a vehicle for the transport, storage and excretion of nitrogen.

ARGININE CONTENT OF SOME COMMON FOODS

    FOOD AMOUNT ARGININE CONTENT (GRAMS)

    Wheat Germ 1 cup 2.70

    Ricotta Cheese 1 cup 1.60Cottage Cheese 1 cup 1.40

    Duck 1 pound 2.20

Very little arginine is found in cereals and grains, and it is very difficult

to find significant amounts of it in most vegetables, fruits, and oils.

Studies have shown that when thirty grams of arginine is administered intravenously, prompt increase of blood glucose, serum insulin and serum glucagon is observed. The elderly

respond with a significantly greater elevation of glucose and growth hormone as well. Arginine

    enhances the utilization of glucose.

Growth hormone stimulates the growth of bone and cartilage systems, and favors the

retention of amino acids incorporated into proteins and the release of fatty acids from adiposetissue. Growth hormone release, via arginine, may be beneficial in supporting the naturalprocess of the healing of fractures and wounds. Arginine supplementation of 4.3 grams per day

was given three to four days prior to surgery and three to ten days after the operation. It wasnoted that incisions healed more quickly and greater collagen synthesis resulted.

Arginine is even more effective than the other amino acids methionine, taurine or glycine inhelping maintain proper blood cholesterol levels in experimental animals. Diets enriched with

eighteen percent arginine produced positive results (Ryzhenkov et. al., 1984; Sugamo, 1984).

Amino-Sculpt Collagen is an enzymatically hydrolyzed, high energy formula containing

five grams of protein per tablespoonful with a high Net Protein Utilization (NPU) specifically

containing the amino acids arginine, proline, hydroxyproline and glycine which help spare

lean body mass and provide energy. Each tablespoonful provides a full five grams of protein.

Because the protein in Amino-Sculpt Collagen has been broken down into its smaller units

of peptides and amino acids by natural enzymes just like in our own digestive tract, it is readily

and easily absorbed. Importantly Amino-Sculpt Collagen contains a high concentration of fourimportant nitrogen providing amino acids glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and arginine. By

maintaining a high level of these amino acids in the bloodstream, Amino-Sculpt Collagen helps

    to preserve lean body mass.

Amino-Sculpt Collagen provides a protein-sparing effect. That is, it helps spare lean body

mass or protect against breakdown of lean body tissues (protein) by standing in its place.Because the amino acids in Amino-Sculpt Collagen are in liquid form combined with the plant

enzymes used to digest them, they are readily absorbed into the bloodstream so they can be used

by all the organs of the bodyfor energy and protein tissue repair and development.

This protein or lean body sparing effect is extremely important during weight loss, body

building, and anti-aging programs. This protecting effect for our muscle tissue is very important

during weight loss because as we restrict calories to help lose weight, as much as forty percent ofthe weight we lose is muscle tissue or lean body mass. If we dont protect our lean body mass

during this time, we actually end up worse than when we started. We may lose weight, but it

will more easily go back on in the form of fat because we now have less lean body mass to burnthe calories we eat. As this process continues, as it has with millions of overweight people, their

body fat percentage increases with time and it becomes more and more difficult to maintain ahealthy weight. For these people, Amino-Sculpt Collagen can be a very important and

worthwhile nutritional supplement. By supplementing with Amino-Sculpt Collagen, you help

your body maintain lean body mass. Therefore, you can continue to burn calories better, helpingyou lose weight by burning fat, not muscle.

Even though Amino-Sculpt Collagen is such an important supplement for weight

management, it should not be overlooked as the fabulous supplement it is for many other aspectsof health maintenance too. Amino-Sculpt Collagen can also be an important supplement in

situations where individuals are at risk of malnutrition such as when digestion is impaired and in

situations of reduced appetite such as with many older people confined in hospitals and nursinghomes for instance. The bodys impaired digestion of proteins that accompanies aging along

with the loss of lean body mass during the aging process also makes Amino-Sculpt Collagen an

important addition to any anti-aging program.

    AMINO-SCULPT COLLAGEN IS PROTEIN

When taking Amino-Sculpt Collagen, it is important to remember it is a natural product

which is made from collagen protein. All proteins consist of various amino acids, which arelinked together like a long chain each link of the chain being an amino acid. The proteinchains in Amino-Sculpt Collagen have been split apart by the natural digestive process so their

individual amino acids (small links in the big chain) are more easily absorbed into your system.

Protein is a very essential nutrient because your body uses it for so many things, such as the

manufacture of enzymes, hormones and other metabolic products. Protein is the major

constituent in lean body tissues including your bones, ligaments, tendons, joints, muscles, bloodvessels, organs, skin, hair and nails. But your body cannot incorporate whole protein from

outside sources into its tissues. It must assemble its own from amino acids. So, when you take

Amino-Sculpt Collagen, it provides far reaching nutritional support in many ways to almost all

of your tissues and organs, plus supports many metabolic processes as well.

    COLLAGEN IS IMPORTANT

Also, remember that the amino acids in Amino-Sculpt Collagen are derived from beefcollagen. Therefore, when you take Amino-Sculpt Collagen, you are providing the specificamino acids needed by your body to produce its own collagen, in that the production of collagen

in your body is such a major ongoing process. Collagen production can be greatly helped whenyou supplement with Amino-Sculpt Collagen.

Extra collagen production can be important during growth and development, in the healingof wounds, in the maintenance of healthy hair, skin and nails and in many other specific

situations. Collagen is the primary constituent of tendons, ligaments and bones. Amino-Sculpt

Collagen can be very worthwhile as specific nutritional supplement for all body joints.

    LEAN BODY MASS

In order for our muscles to maintain themselves, some amount of exercise or work must take

place or they will waste away. This is common among older individuals who remain inactive,

those confined to hospitals, nursing homes and other institutions or those confined to

wheelchairs. However, your muscles must have adequate supplies of the amino acids in Amino-Sculpt Collagen to rebuild, no matter how much activity you experience daily. And, the high

NPU of Amino-Sculpt Collagen ensures good digestibility and utilization in your body.

Another way to describe this process is to say that when you take Amino-Sculpt Collagen,

you are helping preserve your lean body mass. You are helping maintain your muscle tissue so

you maintain a leaner, more firm body. Amino-Sculpt Collagen can be taken for this purpose byitself or with other nutrients.

    AMINO-SCULPT COLLAGEN MEANS ENERGY

Protein is a great source of energy in the body. It is known that maintaining proper amounts

help to ensure a more constant energy level so you dont experience the ups and downs duringthe day, especially between meals. One of the amino acids in Amino-Sculpt Collagen is

especially good for rapid energy because it is actually metabolized like glucose. This is why

many people notice an almost immediate energizing effect when they take Amino-Sculpt

    Collagen.

    AMINO-SCULPT COLLAGEN FOR WEIGHT LOSS

One of the most popular uses of Amino-Sculpt Collagen is in weight management. It is theideal supplement during both the weight loss and weight maintenance phases for several reasons.

By ensuring you have plenty of the amino acids contained in Amino-Sculpt Collagen, it helps

make certain you burn more body fat and at the same time preserve your muscle tissue.

You must maintain negative caloric balance in order to lose weight successfully over the

long term. This means you must burn more calories than you assimilate. This is accomplishedby a combination of restricting calories and maintaining your metabolic rate. Metabolic rate ismaintained by exercising and most importantly by maintaining your lean body mass (muscle).

Amino-Sculpt Collagen provides the special amino acids you need to maintain lean body mass.

It is known that as you lose weight, as much as 40% of it can be lean body mass. So, not onlydoes Amino-Sculpt Collagen help provide energy but also helps you maintain your valuable

muscle mass and burn fat while losing weight. Put another way, Amino-Sculpt Collagen helps

you shed those unwanted inches, fast and safely.

HOW MUCH AMINO-SCULPT COLLAGEN TO TAKE

As a general protein and amino acid supplement, for the general support of collagen

maintenance in the body take one tablespoonful of Amino-Sculpt Collagen liquid from one tothree times per day, preferably between meals.

For special nutritional support of joints, or other areas, more can be taken if desired.

To build lean body mass, for body building or with other supplements, take up to two

teaspoonfuls three times a day. Take 30 minutes before and after your workout.

To support energy, take one or two tablespoonfuls between meals with a glass of water as

    desired.

To lose weight and inches, always take one (to three) tablespoonful(s) at bedtime with a

glass of water on an empty stomach. You can also take mid-morning and mid-afternoon meals

with a glass of water for energy.

    AMINO ACID COMPOSITION

Amino-Sculpt Collagen contains nineteen to twenty amino acids that have been hydrolyzed

from beef collagen. The exact content of each amino acid will vary slightly because Amino-

Sculpt Collagen is a natural product and as such, some variation will always occur. However,

standards are always met and the following analysis is typical:

It is important to realize the presence of the amino acids arginine, glycine, proline andhydroxyproline because they provide the high NPU for Amino-Sculpt Collagen as they rate high

on the nitrogen donor list of important amino acids.
