Herzogsägmühle
There are many reasons why fellow citizens suddenly become unable to manage their lives on their own, may it be for a while or even permanently. Usually, this is not their personal fault. More commonly, these crises derive from organic or mental diseases, as well as from social conflicts and family prob-lems that may necessitate a special therapy and a modified environment for living, lear-ning and working. Those who receive support by the Herzog-sägmühle depend on the respect everyone deserves within society. In this regard, St Paul reminds us: “Accept each other just as Christ has accepted you.”

HerzogsägmühleA Place Like No Other
Herzogsägmühle – A Charming Place
Many people who visit us for the first time encounter a quite ordinary village. Beautifully settled in the countryside, the parish with its 900 residents is situated in the famous area of Pfaffenwinkel between Peiting and Schongau.Herzogsägmühle is a district of the muni-cipality of Peiting, located five kilometres away. The place itself is characterized by a grown, colourful mixture of residential and administrational buildings, stores and work-shops. The town centre at the village square is surrounded by the church and the may-pole, a sports and festival centre as well as the non-alcoholic restaurant Herzog with its bowling alley and minigolf course. Various schools, sport and leisure facilities are situated in the area.

YEven a proper fire department and a cemetery can be found here. Rounding off the image, the village itself is surrounded by vast fields and forests.
Herzogsägmühle – A Social Place
Our village is not just a beautiful place. At the same time, it’s a home for people who have been disadvan- taged by life in some way. The reason for this could be a psychological disease, a mental or physical han-dicap as well as the loss of home or employment. In Herzogsägmühle, this special community, these people find a place to live, supported by specialists from social, medical, caring, crafting, commercial and technical professions. Beyond that, we offer voca-tional training in 41 branches, as well as specialized propositions concerning therapy, education and soci-al aid. Many co-workers who live in Herzogsägmühle with their families contribute to the character of this quite normal and yet very particular place.
Herzogsägmühle – A Place of Bavarian Deaconry
With Herzogsägmühle’s supporting association “Innere Mission München – Diakonie in München und Oberbayern e.V.” we are a member of Diakonisches Werk Bayern (the social services organisation of the Protestant church in Bavaria). The employees are rooted in Christian values or receive according offers. Besides the improvement of the relations one has to others as well as to oneself, our social work focu-ses on the mediation of people’s trust in god, spiritual guidance and the combination of spirituality and as-sistance in life.

Herzogsägmühle – Offering Opportunities to the Region In the past 25 years Herzogsäg- mühle has built a strong con- nection to the region itself. Its consulting offices, day-care centers for mentally challengedcitizens, accommodation facilities and manifold out- patient services can now be found in neighboring cities like Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Marktoberdorf, Peiting, Penzberg, Schongau and Weilheim, too.
All together, there are three schools available for peop-le from all over Southern Bavaria. The village commu-nity of Herzogsägmühle with its specific atmosphere of mutual respect has blended well into the region.
With its services and products at over 150 locations it’s also a powerful employer with more than 1100 employees, whose working and spending power let the whole region profit from this social enterprise.
Many economic and personal links to shops and companies in the region ensure both a good occu- pancy and workload of our local training companies and sheltered workshops.
A guarantor for a stable social network in the Pfaffen- winkel area – this is what Herzogsägmühle stands for, too.
Herzogsägmühle A Place with History
The name Herzogsägmühle goes back to duke (German: Herzog) Christoph the strong in the 15th century, who ran a sawing mill (German: Sägemühle) here. From 1894 to 1905 the “Association for worker colonies in Bavaria” purchased the estates, including “Unterobland”, the present town centre, and the “Oberobland” area. Here, the named so- ciety founded the second Bavarian worker colony for poor and homeless men and gave to it the name HERZOGSÄGMÜHLE.
Since 1946 Herzogsägmühle is managed by the society “Innere Mission München –Diakonie in München und Oberbayern e.V.” From a state-owned workers’ colony back in the Third Reich it by now has developed into an open village with good infrastructure.

modern apartments at site or be- nefit from our range of ser-vices in Schongau, Peiting, Landsberg a. L. and Weilheim. Health-promoting activities and regular cultural events are roun-ding up the picture.
A Place to Live
Besides, there are residential offers for citizens who – due to their personal health and ability to work – cannot live on their own anymore, nor participate in the first labour market. They receive our respect and acknowledgement in a welcoming environment, as well as extensive attendance, guidance and help in a stabilizing community.
Our Consulting Centers and the Hostel
Before it comes to a loss of home, we’re offering pre- ventive support through our offices in the region of Weilheim-Schongau and Ostallgäu, that also assist in the case of private insolvency. If people already haven’t got a roof over theirs heads, our hostel offers them an open and non-obligatory service of accom- modation and regeneration.
Vocational Promotion, Work and Employment
In Herzogsägmühle, there’s the possibility to realign or accomplish a professional education in our diverse training companies. Furthermore we offer structured daily schedules and the opportunity to get a regular employment, including insurance and pension bene-fits.
Catching Up Again
Life doesn´t always go as planned. People, especially those who live in socially special circumstances, are going through painful experiences and get deeply influenced by them. At the time where the loss of home, of work or a beloved partner cannot be over- come, there’s the threat of an ongoing life on the streets. To cope with such a life crisis, Herzogsägmühle offers a broad and strongly individualized assistance.
Interim Accommodation
In the field of interim accommodation we pursue the goal to get people standing on their own feet again as soon as possible. Our extensive social, psychological and thera- peutic aid supports the returning into a self- determined life as well as practical training. Our clients are lodging in single-rooms and
mastering different problems, and they provide efficient support when there are worries concer-ning education and professional training.
At the same time our associates accompany the biographical background with the personal past, including a co-operation with the parents and support for a realistic plan for the future.
For those kids who are mentally unstable, endange- red in their development or threatened by a persistent handicap we offer (ad hoc) admissions in our clea- ring department for boys and girls and, what’s more, individually designed and integrated support and maintenance in special pedagogic establishments in Germany and abroad.
These offers are endorsed by groups with a training in personal autonomy and individually assisted living.
Besides, we provide – if necessary – ambulant social- pedagogic, systemic and therapeutic assistance for families in distressed situations. The reasons might be, for example, when families cannot cope with every- day life anymore, parents seem to be overwhelmed with the care and education of their kids or when children might be endangered in their development.
In our department we have the possibility to clarify the amount of assistance needed and to intervene quickly, if a crisis occurs. Our advice and assistance takes place in the households of the families, or in our premises in Schongau, Landsberg a. L. and Kempten.

A Specially Adopted Working World
Guiding Principles In the workshops of Herzogsägmühle it is our goal to create a complying professional life for everyone. We achieve this by a huge diversity of workplaces, additional professi-onal education and an adjusted individuali-zation of our workstations.
In our enterprises in Schongau and Peiting we have different working groups focussing on toll manufacturing, professional services and in-house production. The respective in- structors are part of a multidisciplinary team, consisting of masters and assistants with additional pedagogical qualifications, reme- dial therapists, social education workers and psychologists. Our vocational preparation centers with their specific learning content provide a comprehensive qualification for an appropriate posterior field of profession be
it for people with psychological problems or those with mental handicaps. All in all, we offer over 25 types of employment, each individually aligned to the personal affinities, skills and the nature of handicap of our cli-ents. The employees receive a salary which is subjected to their capabilities and the individual workload. They all receive assurance and pension benefits for the whole duration of employment. What’s more, we are offering accompanying courses promoting their personal de- velopment and the gradual integration in the common labour market.
Special Abilities Our sheltered support facility is destined for severely handicapped people who cannot (or not yet) be em-ployed in our workshops. Social integration, dignity and acceptance – this is what our clients experience in seven different fostering groups that are all focu-sing on incitement and promotion.
A Fulfilled Day Despite an Older Age Our Lekos daycare center has been created for el-der citizens with or without handicaps and serves for a surplus in participation. The pedagogical work is aligned to the biography of the visitors. The facility itself is characterized by common rooms and an open atmosphere, supplemented by the possibility of per- sonal privacy. Manifold and inspiring activity offers are completing our range of services.
For that reason, we’re taking their wishes and expectations very seriously. Together, we dis- cuss where there’s a need for help and support, and where there is not. Thus, we’re facing and discussing the following questions:
•Where do I want to live?•How do I want to live?•What goals do I want to achieve in life?
To answer these questions, we have established a consulting office with professionals who inform and give advice. Most of the time, the client’s family and other related persons like friends or caretakers are getting involved in his or her personal planning of the future, too.
Here’s an overview concerning our services and offers:
•Support in the management of everyday life•Advice and suggestions concerning leisure
time activities through the daily routine.•Maintaining contact with friends and relations•Communication with public authorities•Crisis management and help, if care
dependency occurs•And many more…
You can stay with us, even when you’re getting old or ill. We’re helping you as long as we can, or as long as you want us to!

Self-determination and Participation for a Valuable Life
Accommodation for Handicapped People
Everybody should have the right to live self-determinedly – this certainly applies for peo-ple with handicaps, too. Herzogsägmühle has created several offers for them.
Handicapped citizens want to decide freely in every aspect of life – therefore, they need advice, support and assistance, but also the ability to make real choices and use alternati-ves, e.g. within the modality of accommodation.
Herzogsägmühle is offering quite different forms of placement: Single or double apart- ments, single rooms in shared flats and residential communities, in the heart of Her- zogsägmühle or in its vicinity. Fellow citizens with handicaps want to shape their life plan independently.

Enabling Holistic Support
Protestant Professional College for Curative Education and Caretaking
Working in the social sector requires a quali- fied education. With its Liselotte-von-Lepel- Gnitz-School Herzogsägmühle is offering a professional apprenticeship for curative education caretakers and helpers.
Both courses take place in addition to practi-cal training and end with an examination and official approval. At the moment over 90 participators are attending four different courses. They’re working in Herzogsägmühle and facilities in the neighborhood and get supervised by frequent personal contacts with teachers of our school.
Besides their own education, the latter pos- sess year-long experience in theory and practice.
Curative Education Caretakers
The training to become a cura- tive education caretaker lasts over three years and includes professional classes in the fol- lowing fields: pedagogy, cura-tive education, psychology and sociology as well as communication, medical and psychiatric science, maintenance, law and adminis-tration, aspects of Christian theology and conduct of life. The training itself is closely aligned to practical experiences.
After passing their exams, curative education careta-kers and helpers work as specialists in the field of so- cial pedagogy and care. Their activity range extends from education and support over assistance and professional advice to caretaking support and care of handicapped people at any age.
Curative Education Helpers
In this training program, education takes one year and consists of theoretical courses and practical ex-perience in the following subjects: German language, social studies, English, (curative) pedagogy, psycho-logy, anatomy, physiology and pathology, mainte-nance and methodology as well as communication, law, religion and design of a living environment.
Having received their degrees, curative education helpers work as social-pedagogic and caretaking employees, facilitating the lives of people with handi- caps and supporting the tasks of curative education caretakers.S
