The North Queensland Sports Foundation has had a brilliant 2018 which was well supported by communities of North Queensland.

The 2018 Mackay City Auto Group NQ Games was extremely successful raising the bar for future games. With over 3,000 participants involved in 29 sports in Mackay & the Whitsundays the games injected much needed economic and community benefits to the region.

The 2018 QCCU NQ Sportstar Awards surpassed previous awards with 42 nominations and a packed house for the gala event. Ninety-eight of the 144 attending were from outside the Cassowary Coast region supporting the significance of the awards to our NQ sporting communities.

Both events received additional promotion by way of a new upgraded NQSF’s online campaign. We now have more people engaged with the Foundation being updated regularly with our events and projects.

The Joint Venture project with Northern Queensland Primary Health Network commenced in July by appointing Judah Morris. Judah has hit the ground running with the project plan due in the coming weeks. OCTOBER 2018 ISSUEwww.nqsports .com.au

The 2018 Mackay City Auto Group North Queensland Games was held May 5th to May 7th with sporting events in the Mackay and Whitsunday regions. Twenty-nine sporting hosts, 2,666 competitors and 698 officials participated in the MCAG NQ Games. The Mackay Region Organizing Committee (MROC) commenced meetings May 2017 and met monthly with meetings moving fortnightly from Oct 2017.

For the first time the QLD Government conducted a sport and recreation conference in conjunction with the NQ Games. The conference was focused on providing the latest information to our sporting communities whilst at the games. The conference was held at the CQ University city campus.

2018 MCAG NQ Games partners included Mackay City Auto Group (MCAG) as naming rights sponsor and a pleasure to work with. MCAG also provided a vehicle during the games to transport our VIP’s from event to event. TEQ provided QDEP funding for our social media campaign and to engage promotions and event specialists for the games. CQ University provided funding for the games and the facilities to run the sport and recreation conference. Followmont provided freight from Townsville to Mackay. Funding was also received via the GCBF to invest in the promotion of

the games throughout NQ. Origin Energy provided their services in kind which ensured the Opening and Closing ceremonies were not only a spectacle but safe.

A special thanks to the 56er’s Olympic Torchbearers Club for their continued support of the 1500m feature race. Thank you to Bill Cummings from the 56ers who travelled to the official opening ceremony in Mackay and stayed on to present the trophies and prize money to the winners and runners up the following day.

A huge thank you to our Sports Hosts and NQ Games’ volunteers; your enthusiasm and commitment contributed greatly to the success of our games.

The Mackay Regional Council was extremely proactive from the onset. Headed up by Cr Kevin Casey the team went to work to ensure the 2018 Mackay City Auto Group NQ Games would be one to be remembered. All Council resources were made available to the MROC to guarantee the games were a success.

The NQSF team was dedicated to ensure the registration and check in process would be remembered for the right reasons. The reviews we have received are a reflection of the effort invested in our online registration system. The system

met with all our expectations.

Former Australian Jillaroo, Renae Kunst was the MCAG NQ Games ambassador. Renae is a fantastic ambassador for the Mackay community, representing sport at an elite level and women in sport, it was fitting Renae was the 2018 Games ambassador. Renae was flanked by Olympic Gold medalists and locals Linda Single, Tracey Belbin and FNQ Olympic Gold medalist Jon Sieben, during the medal presentations at the various sports.

Thank you for the opportunity to report on the 2018 MCAG NQ Games and look forward to delivering an accurate assessment of the games to ensure we can continue to have a positive impact on future North Queensland Games.

NQ Games Oldest Competitor

Joyce Britt who was born on 19.5.1931 and was the old-est competitor at the 2018 NQ Games. The youngest compet-itor at indoor bowls was born on 20.3.2009

Joyce was the ultimate com-petitor. She played for the win but was never too serious to throw in a joke.

Joyce won 2 silver medals for Indoor Bowls in the 2018 NQ Games. Both were in in-dividual events. The Veterans Mixed Singles which is for 75yrs+ against men and ladies. She played 32 ends of bowls in this competition and there were 8 competitors.

Joyce followed up that with another 3 games of bowls to win silver in the Ladies Open Singles division which had 10

competitors.

A highlight for Joyce at the 2018 NQ Games was when she was asked to present the medals to the winners of the mixed pairs competition. She got a real buzz from that expe-rience.

Joyce is an active member of the Mackay and District Sen-ior Citizens Association and we are very glad of their sup-port of indoor bowls in the NQ Games.

This is what the NQ Games is all about – encouraging ac-tive participation for all in North Queensland!

Joyce Britt, 87, took home 2 silvers in the Indoor Bowls.

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHEXTENDING ONLINE REACH

This year the North Queensland Sports Foundation launched a new improved website and online strategy to reach our extended audience across digital platforms.

The strategy enables the Foundation to regularly update North Queenslanders with current information efficiently and effectively.

NQSF identified it was not enough just to have a website, we needed to know traffic flowing through the website and how traffic got there.

We have adopted an iterative process whereby we can identify strategies that work and identify areas of improvement efficiently.

The new website is not only refreshing but provides valuable data that can in turn be used to increase exposure for our sponsors. The corporate sector plays a vital role in terms of partnerships to facilitate the NQSF portfolio.

To date post the launch we have seen a steady increase in incoming traffic and web visitors who are remaining on our website longer attracting prospective partners.

We will continue to develop our capacity in this space.

Judah MorrisProgram Co-Ordinator With a background in Exercise Physiology, Judah has a strong passion in health promotion and delivering evidence-based interventions to enable individuals and communities to improve their health. Along with experi-ence in developing health programs, Judah is currently completing a Mas-ter of Public Health to further his skills in delivering community-based health and wellness programs. As a competitive distance runner, Judah has a strong interest in the role that sport and recreation play in improv-ing our health and how keeping active contributes to overall wellness.

A strong communicator, Judah is ready to partner with LGAs and relevant stakeholders to ensure community needs are met in the development of sustainable health and wellness programs.

NQSF has partnered with the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) to support NQ LGAs in delivering community health and wellbeing interventions. With 2 in 3 North Queensland adults currently overweight or obese, community initiatives are critical to keep our communities active, as 41.1% of adults don’t meet the minimum exercise recommendations.

Sport and recreation have an obligation to community

health, with sport and recreation organisations aligning to this strategy on a state and national level. Engaging and developing solutions for those not currently active is necessary to reduce the levels of obesity and associated chronic disease. Coordinating this effort is NQSF’s newest employee, Judah Morris. With a background in Exercise Physiology, Judah is passionate

and well suited to be leading up this new initiativ.Through circulated questionnaires and meetings

with member LGAs, the main barriers and needs have been identified. Resources, coordination and internal capacity are the leading factors for preventing many LGAs in providing solutions to keep their communities active and healthy. The findings have cemented the need for ongoing management and coordination, from the NQSF, for our members LGAs.

Program data is continuing to be collated, to help provide a framework in delivering successful initiatives which provide positive change. NQSF will continue to engage with LGAs to ensure initiatives are tailored to specific community. We look forward to continued work with member LGAs in promoting active participation in North Queensland.

Thank you to Glencore who have been long standing supporters of the games, Mount Isa City Council and to QDEP funding from Tourism Events Queensland for supporting what promises to be a games to remember.
