BOARD OF DIRECTORS

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

Cathy Swanson, MPHChief Executive Officer

Thank you! The words seem inadequate to express how muchyour generosity and support forCaldwell Hospice and Palliative Carehas meant to us—not just this year, but for more than three decadesnow. But, words are all we have, so let me say it again—thank you.

Our hospice enjoys tremendoussupport and trust from the community. It is important for youto know we could not do what wedo without you. In 2014-15, yourcontributions helped CaldwellHospice provide nearly $100,000 in care to those in our communitywho needed end-of-life care andservices but had no way to pay for them.

We are humbled and honored byyour giving. And, it is not justfinancial giving that makes itpossible for us to continue ourwork. While monetary donationsare important and needed, CaldwellHospice also relies on the giving oftime and talent to help others.

Each year hundreds of volunteers—from senior citizens to teenagers—give of themselves by visiting withpatients and families, working inthe patient care units, doing clericalwork, and assisting with yard workand other needed tasks. Churches, civic groups and individuals providesnacks for the patient care units, supplies, meals and more. Last

year alone, volunteers providednearly 14,000 hours of service.

Non-profit hospices around thecountry are facing all types ofchallenges in today’s competitivehealth care marketplace. Ours is no exception, but the one thing that sets Caldwell Hospice apartfrom others is the strong, steadfastcommitment of our community.Because of your tax-deductiblecontributions, we are able toprovide hospice and palliative careservices to anyone who needsthem, regardless of ability to pay. But, beyond that, we also can offerbereavement services to thecommunity at large, even thosewho are not affiliated with Caldwell Hospice. We can provideeducational support and training inareas such as dementia care andend-of-life issues. With you, we aretrue community partners.

We pledge to be wise stewards of your contributions and nevertake for granted the kindnesses you bestow on us. We appreciateyour generosity, and we ask foryour continued support as werenew our commitment to you to provide respectful, quality end-of-life care to all who need and desire our services.

—Cathy Swanson, —Chief Executive Officer

Care has been on a mission toprovide compassionate, respectful, quality end-of-life care to ourcommunity regardless of one’sability to pay. In today’s world, such focus on patient and familyfirst may sound a bit old-fashioned,but it has been and shall remainthe guiding force behind our non-profit hospice.

Serving about 750 patients a year,Caldwell Hospice is a leader amongnon-profit hospices statewide. Itoperates North Carolina’s oldestpatient care unit with its Kirkwoodfacility in Lenoir. While the majorityof patients still receive most oftheir care at home, Caldwell alsohas a second patient care unit atthe Robbins Center in Hudson.

“Our community trusts CaldwellHospice to be there in its most difficult and vulnerable times—during the illness and death of a

loved one, and we honor that trustby doing the very best we can tohelp each patient live each day in as much dignity and comfort as possible,” says Swanson. “It is a mission we take most seriously.”

Medicare requires a set of basichospice services from all hospiceagencies for each patient, regardlessof payment source. These includephysician and nursing services, social work services, spiritual andbereavement counseling, anddietary counseling. Medicare and

desires and deserves.

While for-profit corporations havegotten into the hospice business—in fact, 70% of today’s hospiceproviders in the U.S. are for-profit—the not-for-profit community hospicemodel isbuilt not on a financial motive, but an underpinning of ministry andservice first. The hospice movement—nationallyand locally—was founded onthese community principles of neigh-bors helping neighbors.

“We care for people—people whoneed care and compassion as theyand their loved ones face the end of life. That’s our business,” saysCathy Swanson, chief executiveofficer. “Even in an ever-changingand competitive health care market, service to our fellowman has alwaysbeen our number one priority, andit will continue to be because that is what our community desires anddeserves.”

Medicaid beneficiaries who choose toelect the Hospice Medicare/MedicaidBenefit also must be providedmedical supplies, medications forsymptom control and pain relief and different levels of care basedon need as well as home healthaide and homemaker services, volunteer services and physical, occupational and speech therapies.

In every area of care, CaldwellHospice does more than what isrequired, offering much more topatients in our community. Theseenhanced services include: cardiacand pulmonary care at home forpatients with heart/lung disease; a dementia care program; massageand aromatherapy; pet visits; vigilmusic by the bedside; a veteranshonoring veterans program; 11th-hour volunteers to sit with familiesduring the final hours; a legacyproject; and a full complement ofcommunity bereavement services, which are open to anyone whoneeds them, not just hospicepatients and families.

In addition, Caldwell Hospice offersa palliative care program calledAIM: Advanced Illness Management—for those who need assistancemanaging a chronic, potentially life-limiting illness that is not terminal.

All these services are available to all—even those who have noinsurance, Medicare, or any othermeans of payment. In other words,Caldwell Hospice never turns awaya patient because he or she cannotpay, and that patient receives thesame level of care as anyone else.

How can our hospice make thiscommitment when the cost ofhealth care is rising on every front? The answer is the generosity and

support of the community we serve.

Caldwell Hospice was born of agrassroots community movement in the early 1980s to provide ourfriends and neighbors with a holisticapproach to end-of-life care thatwould address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs ofpatients and those who love them.

It was in those very early days thatthis strong commitment to CaldwellHospice was forged and established, and it has continued to sustain usall these years as we have grownand expanded our services andoutreach.

“We are not just another healthcareprovider. We are your communityhospice, and we are honored thatyou have chosen to entrust us withthe care of your loved ones,” saysSwanson. “Ours truly is a jointeffort—Caldwell Hospice and thecommunity coming together to carefor one another. Neighbors helpingneighbors—that is the difference, the real distinction of a non-profithospice.”

We are not just another

healthcare provider. We are

your community hospice, and

we are honored that you have

chosen to entrust us with the

care of your loved ones.
