In addition to thanking workers, Labor Day has become an important weekend for many small businesses. Small businesses are the driving force of San Diego's economy, representing more than 70,000 businesses (approximately 92 percent of all businesses in the City) and about half of San Diego's job growth since 1991. Because of this, Labor Day goes hand in hand with the mission of America’s small businesses--that is, to get people working and moving toward economic prosperity. I have made it a priority to work with the Diamond BID to retain existing businesses and provide services and resources to ensure that San Diego’s Fourth District transforms into a favorable location for new business and economic development. Labor Day is an opportune time to consider how we treat our workers and build loyalty towards small businesses that help to make communities thrive. Labor Day: A Time to Celebrate Workers and Small Businesses This weekend, in celebration of Labor Day, we had an opportunity to reflect on the many ways that the Labor Movement has improved all of our lives and thank the working men and women for their contributions to our communities.
