Double rates of progress for struggling learners

Catch Up® Literacy and Catch Up® Numeracy are structured one-to-one

interventions proven to significantly improve the achievement of learners who

find literacy or numeracy difficult. Both interventions are based on rigorous academic

research and are easy to deliver, manage and sustain, involving just two 15-minute

individual sessions per week, delivered by teaching assistants, teachers or mentors.

Achieve double the normal rate of progress in learners’ Reading and Number Ages

Maximise effectiveness of support staff, trained to deliver proven interventions

Improve learners’ confidence, behaviour, and engagement with the whole curriculum

Encourage learning through success with interventions targeted to individual needs

Catch Up® is a not-for-profit charity working to address literacy and numeracy difficulties that contribute to underachievement.

Both interventions begin with assessments for learning, which enable the adult to identify an

appropriate focus for the individual learner. The interventions then comprise two 15-minute

individual sessions per week, delivered in most cases by teaching assistants, in which the learner

reads from the chosen book or takes part in the chosen numeracy activity, and completes some

linked writing/recording that addresses identified miscues.

How the interventions work

Stage 1:

Assessments for learningThe trained teaching assistant or teacher uses our bank of easy-to-administer assessments to determine what the learner can do and where their needs lie.

The results are used to set Catch Up® Literacy or Catch Up® Numeracy targets and identify the appropriate starting point.

Stage 2: Selecting an appropriate reading book or numeracy focusFor Catch Up® Literacy, the results of the assessments are used to identify the correct starting book level. You can then choose an appropriate book (from your existing collection) using the Catch Up® Literacy online booklist.

For Catch Up® Numeracy, the results from the assessments are used to create a Catch Up® Numeracy learner profile. Each individual learner will have their own profile of need across the components of numeracy.

Catch Up® Literacy uses a book-based

approach to support learners in their

reading of a book so they activate both

dimensions of reading – word recognition

processes (including phonics) and

language comprehension processes.

Grounded in academic research, it

is designed for use with struggling

readers aged 6–14 whose Reading Age

is significantly below their Chronological

Age.

How the interventions work

Stage 3:

The individual sessionA 15-minute individual session is delivered twice a week by the trained teaching assistant or teacher. It comprises:

Catch Up® Literacy•  Prepared reading – 3 minutes•  Learner reads and the text is discussed – 6 minutes•  Linked writing – 6 minutes

Catch Up® Numeracy•  Review and introduction – 3 minutes•  Numeracy activity – 6 minutes•  Linked recording – 6 minutes

Stage 4:

Ongoing monitoringA record sheet (from the learner’s Catch Up® progress booklet) is completed during each individual session. This ongoing record provides valuable information about the learner’s needs and progress. The teaching assistant and teacher regularly monitor the progress booklet and sessions log, and review the learner’s Catch Up® Literacy or Numeracy targets.

We recommend that progress is also monitored by means of a standardised test.

3

Throughout both interventions,

the emphasis is on providing

effective personalised learning

support for the individual learner

within a positive, supportive and

enabling framework.

Catch Up® Numeracy addresses 10 key components

of numeracy:

•  Counting verbally  •  Hundreds, tens and units

•  Counting objects  •  Estimation

•  Reading and writing  •  Word problems

•  Translation  •  Derived facts

•  Remembered facts  •  Ordinal numbers

Key facts• For struggling learners aged 6–14 (not beginner learners)• 15-minute sessions, twice a week• Delivered by teaching assistants, teachers or mentors• Grounded in rigorous academic research• Available in Welsh medium

Grounded in academic research, it is designed

for use with learners aged 6–14 who struggle

with numeracy, and whose Number/Maths Age is

significantly below their Chronological Age.

Learners on Catch Up® Literacy make more than double the normal rate of progress. Learners aged 6–14 who received Catch Up® Literacy support over an  average period of 7 months showed an average Reading Age gain of around  19 months.

(Data for 3,134 learners from 27 local authorities, 2010.)

Learners in Years 7 – 10 who received Catch Up® Literacy support for an  average period of 8.3 months made average Reading Age gains of 16.7 months.

(As reported in ‘Catch Up® in Secondary Schools’.)

CASE STUDIESCase study from Callington Community College, Bronze Catch Up® Excellence Award WinnerChild A began Catch Up® sessions in Year 7 and was a very shy and quiet student. She did not want to read in class for fear that she made a mistake. She now has a go at decoding words and frequently surprises herself when she gets it right. After 6 months, she is more comfortable and confident with reading. Her spelling and punctuation have also dramatically improved. She volunteered to read aloud a piece that she had written, in front of a class of Year 7, 8 and 9 students, and even entered the BBC 500-word short story competition.

Case study from Jenner Park Primary, Gold Catch Up® Excellence Award Winner

Child Z was assessed for Catch Up® Literacy at the beginning of Year 2, after previously accessing support for phonics in Year 1. He started the intervention at Catch Up® Literacy level 3 and very quickly moved through levels 3, 4, 5 and 6. Child Z had 46 sessions of Catch Up® and states he reads a lot at home now, as he enjoys reading. He uses all the strategies he has learnt to decode more difficult and complex words.

Evidence and impact

My reading’s much better than it was last time. I’m able to understand words and split them up to read them.

He really enjoyed putting expression into his reading and this developed into full volume fire engine siren noises!!

Two EEF* randomised controlled trials showed pupils receiving Catch Up® support from Catch Up® trained TAs improved their literacy and numeracy outcomes compared with their control group.

Learners on Catch Up® Numeracy make more than double the normal rate of progress. Learners aged 6 – 11 who received Catch Up® Numeracy support for an average period of 5 months achieved average Number/Maths Age gains of 11 months.

(Data for 348 learners)

Learners in Years 7 – 10 who received Catch Up® Numeracy support for an average period of 5 months achieved average Number/Maths Age gains of 15 months.

CASE STUDIESCase study from Parc Primary School, Silver Catch Up® Excellence Award WinnerAt the start of Year 5, Child B’s Number Age was 5:01, 52 months behind his Chronological Age. He lacked confidence in Numeracy and said that doing Maths made him sad. He described his Maths ability as “terrible” and was reluctant to answer questions, for fear of failing.

Since receiving Catch Up®, Child B’s confidence has soared. He is now eager to do Maths, enjoys a variety of components, and even feels confident enough to help peers!  When re-tested after 10 months, the data reflected this; his Number Age had increased by 60 months, to 10.01.

Time on intervention: 10 months ❚ Number Age gain: 60 months

Case study from Jenner Park Primary, Gold Catch Up® Excellence Award Winner

Prior to Catch Up® Numeracy, Pupil A rarely took an active role in class lessons. She was dependent on regular support during Maths activities. Her knowledge of basic numeracy strategies, such as number bonds, was poor and this contributed to her low confidence and poor self-esteem. During the period of support, it became obvious that Pupil A was enjoying the sessions – “Is it my turn?” – and was growing in confidence during class Maths, “She now puts her hand up to answer questions more often (and gets them right, even the harder ones).” This confidence is being matched by improved outcomes:

I wasn’t that good at maths at first but now I’m getting better.

I really feel more confident with the number sentences now.

Both interventions are in the list of six evidence-based interventions to support TAs in their one-to-one instruction, in the EEF* ‘Making Best Use of Teaching Assistants Guidance Report’.

‘We are doing it because it makes a difference.’‘We are a charity that has developed two interventions that we know  make a real impact for struggling learners. We’ve found something that really  works for children and we want to help educators get the maximum benefit from it. We know it works and other people tell us that it works. Learners achieve double the normal rate of  progress (and frequently more) when on the interventions and research shows that seven years  later, the gains are retained. We want to make a difference for as many learners as possible and make it as easy as possible for teachers and TAs to do the same. With Catch Up® Literacy and Catch Up® Numeracy, we can do that – they’re realistic, practical, cost-effective, and they work!’

Julie Lawes, Catch Up® Director

Why choose Catch Up®?

It works!‘He finished with a reading age of 10 years and 2 months – a ratio gain of 5!’

‘Following a series of 20 sessions of Catch Up® Numeracy, we were very pleased to see his standardised score move from 91 to 102 and also his confidence in class improve significantly.’

‘In September 2013, his reading age was 29 months behind his chronological age. When the final testing was finished in June 2014, his reading age was 3 months above where he should be.’

‘When tested with the BNST after 10 months,  the data reflected this; his Number Age had  increased by 60 months, to 10, just 4 months  behind his Chronological Age.’

It’s easy‘We followed the procedures, kept to the timetable and it worked. It worked very rapidly for most pupils.’

‘It’s only two 15 minutes a week so the children aren’t out all afternoon and it allows the teaching assistants to work with more children.’

‘I’ll go and look at the learner profiles and, because they’re so visual, you can just see whether the  children are making any progress or whether there are any issues.’

‘It just seems to run itself, it’s not onerous, it doesn’t take up a lot of my time, and we get good results.’

Quotes and case studies from our Catch Up® schools – visit www.catchup.org to read more.

Children love it‘It has been easier because without any noise around, you can get on with it.’

‘Since I’ve been doing Catch Up®, I’ve been putting my hand up more confidently and then answering the questions. I do get some wrong but I do get quite a lot right now!’

‘The children will often chase me up the corridor to find out when they can work with me again. They love it...and so do I!’

‘Children can see they’re making progress, it’s easy to deliver after training and kids enjoy it.’
