Founded in 1848, John Newton & Co Ltd is thelongest-established independent specialist indamp proofing, water control and drainageproducts in the UK. Our products are specified byarchitects and structural engineers for use acrossthe construction spectrum – from newdevelopments to historic buildings, includingconversion, renovation and refurbishment.

Acknowledged leaders in our field, wepioneered the development and introduction ofcavity drainage membrane technology in 1937with the introduction of the revolutionaryNewtonite pitch-impregnated fibre membrane.Over five million metres of this material hasbeen used throughout the UK.

In 1984 we invented the Newlath meshedmembrane which can be plastered or rendered –the precursor of the current generation of highdensity studded polypropylene/polyethylenemembranes we supply today.

Product quality and effectiveness is complementedby full service and support. A network ofregistered contractors operates throughout theUK, and all registered contractors have beenNewton trained to ensure consistently highquality installations – irrespective of the type ofbuilding project.

Building on the Newtonite ventilated membraneprinciple, Newlath 2000 uses polypropylene fixingplugs. This eliminates corrosion problems and providesa reliable plaster base that will last the lifetime of thebuilding.

Damp is a problem in many buildings. Even lowlevels of penetration can cause discolouration tosurface plaster and wallcoverings.

Newlath 2000 provides a firm key and an effectivebarrier on any damp or deteriorating surfaces wheredirect bonding is not possible, including timber framebuildings. Direct contact coatings depend on a soundsurface for successful performance. Silicone injectioncan only be effective if the substrate is not subject tosettlement cracks or is made up of various materials.Other sheet membranes will also fail if they arepunctured, and bitumen coatings may break downover time.

The key advantage of Newlath 2000 is that it formsa physical barrier between the old surface and the newfinish. It can also be punctured when wall fittings areneeded, providing Newton Mastic is applied beforefixing.

The air gap behind the Newlath 2000 membraneallows the wall to breathe and remain stable. Dampcannot accumulate to cause further deterioration, andresidual dampness is vented.

The materialNewlath 2000 is made from 0.5mm thick high densitytranslucent polypropylene, which is inherently stable, formed into a pattern of raised studs linked byreinforcing ribs. Polythene mesh is thermally weldedto the surface on one side. The 5mm studs form acavity on the wall side, and the mesh on the faceprovides a rot-proof key for plastering or rendering.

Newlath 2000 offers high resistance to water, alkalis, salt solutions, minerals and inorganic acids. It is alsoresistant to bacteria, fungi and other micro-organisms.

Easy installationNewlath 2000 is light, clean and easy to handle. It canbe easily cut and shaped with a sharp knife or shears. For a reliable long-term solution, the speciallydesigned polypropylene plugs that are available withthe material should be used. Newlath can be appliedeither vertically or horizontally from ceiling to floorand on ceilings or arches.

Walls can be finished using plaster or cement-basedrenders, and plasterboard can also be applied toNewlath 2000 for dry lining if required (dot and dab).

Newlath 2000 can also be used externally as awaterproof support for rendered finishes in exposedsituations such as gable lends, or where external wallshave deteriorated because of sea salts or wind corrosion.

Even where penetrating water is a problem, NewtonSystem 500 can allow wet areas such as basements, cellars or railway arches to be reclaimed as usefulliving or working space.

As well as renovating and extending existing homes,Newton System 500 products can also be used fornew basements and cellars, making more room – andincreasing the value of the property.

Newton System 500 also provides solutions for anyother underground locations that may be subject tohigh water levels and flooding, such as vaults, passage-ways and other subterranean structures. NewtonSystem 500 is not affected by thermal movement, shrinkage or vibration, so it offers major advantagescompared with traditional cementitious tanking inlocations such as Underground stations and tunnels.

Newton System 500 also protects against damagecaused by other contaminants such as salts, oils, mould or chemicals.

The productsThree types of membrane are available:

• Newton 500 is a 0.7mm thick, high densitytranslucent polypropylene roll with 8mm studs, which provides a drainage capacity of 5.5 litres perm2 between the membrane and the wall being treated– the highest specification membrane on the market.

• Newton 500 Lath is the same 8mm stud profile, with a mesh bonded to the outer surface to allowdirect application of plaster or render finishes.

• Newton 520 is a heavy duty flooring membranewith a 20mm stud for an increased water flowrate.

Insulation can be incorporated into the floor withall Newton flooring membranes.

These membranes must be used in conjunction witha range of drainage products:

• Newton Basedrain is an extruded drainage channeldesigned to be installed internally at the wall/floorjunction where it creates a depressurisation spacepreventing water building up and coming to bearon the membranes.

• Newton Baseboard is an extruded trunkingdrainage system that is sealed to an internal wall/floor junction, where Basedrain cannot be usedabove the slab because of head height issues, orbecause the slab cannot be weakened.

• Newton Titan sump pumps remove accumulatedexcess water channelled to them by the membranesand drainage components.

Because very little substrate preparation is required, installation is quicker and easier than tanking productssuch as asphalt, dense renders and paint-on or sheetbituminous systems. No heating, mixing or torching isrequired. Newton System 500 installations are idealfor historic buildings, where preparation forconventional tanking would be harmful to the buildingfabric, and a reversible system may be required.

Any space either wholly or partially undergroundcan be prone to water ingress, not just to damp.Newton’s unique combination of membrane anddrainage products creates a dry and waterproofenvironment.

Newton System 500 is deemed a maintainablecavity drain system in accordance with BS8102.

Waterproofing new build cellars and basements hasalways been a challenge. Unless it is 100% defect-free, conventional barrier tanking will never be asatisfactory solution.

Newton Geodrain is an ideal external cavity drainmembrane system.

Filter fabricGeodrain uses a 6mm stud cavity drain membranewhich features Geotex, a filter fabric thermally weldedto the studded face. This fabric allows water to passinto the cavity created by the studs, but filters outfine particles and sediment. Any water entering thecavity falls down to a perforated pipe (land drain orFrench drain) below internal slab level. The filter fabricshould also continue around the pipe to prevent theentry of sediment.

Geodrain offers total protection if the recommendedfull installation is used. This has the Geodrainmembrane under the floor slab and continuing up theretaining walls. With the full installation theperforated pipe is fully isolated behind the Geotexfilter fabric.

Long lifeAdvanced production techniques ensure that Geotex issecurely welded to the cavity membrane – ensuringlong-term reliability of the material. The use of highquality polypropylene gives the product flexibility anddurability.

Geodrain is also quick and easy to install. A largebasement can be treated in a day. To give a neat andtidy finish to the installation, Newton Geoprofile capsthe Geodrain at the top of the retaining wall.

Newton SlimlineNewton Slimline is lightweight and easy to cut, shapeand form, and minimal preparation is required.Surfaces need to be clean and free of loose materialand any sharp objects. A unique channel design allowsfree passage of water vapour under the membrane, and waterproof joints. The material can also be easilycut, shaped and taped around irregular wall features.

Reliable protectionNewton flooring membranes protect against water(when used as part of the Newton 500 system) andvapour ingress, as well as any other chemical orbiological contaminants that may be in the substrate.Ideal for new build and refurbishment projects, themembranes allow fast reinstatement of new floors.

FinishingMost types of flooring can be applied direct to themembranes. The most common of these are particleboard, laminated or solid wood flooring, or combinationboard such as Kingspan Thermafloor TF73.

Newton 300Although this membrane provides a wide enough airgap for maximum water drainage and damp pressureequalisation, a low stud profile of 3mm minimisesproblems caused by raised floor levels.

Newton 300 provides a reliable, long-term solutioncompared with other types of damp-proofing andwaterproofing treatment. It is guaranteed againstdeterioration for 30 years, and has a life expectancyof at least 50 years (DIN 9001:2000).

The membrane can also be used with Newton 500products to provide a complete waterproofingsolution fully compliant with BS8102. It can also beused with thermal insulation, sound proofing andmost types of under-floor heating.

The quality and effectiveness of John Newtonmembrane products is complemented by a range ofproven drainage products and accessories. These rangefrom simple drainage channels, to sump and pumpproducts to control and remove water below ground.

NP400A durable and reliable pump capable of pumping 185litres/minute at 2m head. This pump will run in eventhe most demanding situations and in areas with highlimescale.

Newton TitanThe UK’s best selling specialist pumping system, theNewton Titan is acknowledged as the leading productin its class. Its key advantage is its versatility – it canbe supplied with lids for side or top discharge. Thedimensions of the sump chamber are designed formaximum efficiency of the pump.

Installation is easy, as pumps are simply placed inthe basin, plumbed in and wired up. Pumps aredesigned to pass soft solids up to 35mm, and operatealmost silently.

Newton Titan PlusThis features two pumps and a converter system –unique to John Newton – attached to a battery incase of power failure. Trickle charging of the batteryensures that it is always at full capacity. The verticalfloat switches are set at intervals so that in normaloperation one pump is always available in case of

mechanical failure of the primary pump. The Titan Plus system is recommended in all below

ground situations. We recommend an annualmaintenance contract with your installer to ensurethe efficiency and longevity of the pump system.

Newton BasedrainBasedrain is a drainage conduit that is designed to beinstalled at the junction between wall and floor (iewall/floor junction internally). It is an integral part ofthe Newton 500 system enabling water ingressing theweakest point of the structure to be channelled to eitheradequate natural drainage or a Newton pump system.

The special design of the channel enables insulatedplasterboard to be used with the system, without fearof interstitial condensation. Jetting/rodding eyes arerecommended for periodical maintenance.

Newton BaseboardThis is a drainage channel designed to remove waterfrom the wall/floor junction where the slab cannot bedamaged or where headroom constraints prevent theuse of Basedrain above the slab. In certain circumstancesit may be used without a wall membrane dependingon the grade of waterproofing required.

It is recommended that all below ground work iscarried out by a Newton specialist basement contractor.

Please note we recommend that all pumps areinstalled by a qualified electrician.
