New Nursery News
We have a start date for our new nursery! The work will start during the half-term break on Monday 17th February. Please bear with us as our Rosehill site becomes a bit busier than usual while our nursery moves into our Rosehill
building. We will keep you updated with the progress of the work via our Facebook page www.facebook.com/HTRosehill and texts.
This really is an exciting time for our school and we cannot wait to show our children and their families around our new provision for our youngest children.
Happy New Year! Although we have now been in school for four weeks this is our first newsletter of 2020 – and what a busy four weeks it has been! We have welcomed three children and their families, Mrs Monty, who joins our cleaning team, and Mrs Whelerton, our Deputy Head Teacher, into school this month. We also welcomed Mr Matt Vickers, new MP, into school this month – have you seen the lovely letter he sent into school following his visit which was shared via our Facebook page www.facebook.com/HTRosehill ? Our children have been busy as always - from representing our school in a football tournament, to singing at Middlesbrough Town Hall as part of the United Nations 75th Anniversary celebrations and making staff proud everyday with their determination and smiles. Long may all of this continue as we travel together through 2020.
As always, if you need to contact school regarding any queries, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher in the first instance (your child’s contact book is the best way to do this) or our school office. We will reply to your query as soon as possible. We aim to get in touch within 48 hours and will, as always, prioritise safeguarding concerns.

Share the miracle
This Lent Holy Trinity Rosehill will join other schools and churches in the diocese to engage in ShareTheMiracle and help 'put a dent in loneliness' locally. The intergenerational concept, originally trialled in Westminster and endorsed by the Lord Mayor was run by a growing number of Anglican schools last year. We will set up two 'ShareTheMiracle Stations' (a simple collection point for Easter Eggs), one on the Trinity site and one on the Rosehill Site. We are inviting members of our school community to donate an Easter egg. These will then be distributed to the elderly locally in an intergenerational expression of kindness. Further information is available at www.sharethemiracle.org/get-involved/schools/ The ShareTheMiracle vision is to see a wave of kindness transform local communities far and wide at Easter. It provides a simple way to start a conversation, meet people you may not ordinarily and reach out to those less fortunate locally. The giving of an egg has proven to be a catalyst to ‘little miracles’. The egg that starts a conversation, an elderly person to feel less lonely when a school reaches out. The possibilities are endless. Each egg has the opportunity to change a situation and each act of kindness helps strengthen your community, form friendships and release hope. We will launch ‘ShareTheMiracle’ during our Collective Worships during the week commencing Monday 24th February, which coincides with the beginning of Lent. More information about donating Easter Eggs and the location of the stations will be given during this week. We hope you will join us to ‘put a dent in loneliness’ this Easter.
Safeguarding (keeping our children safe) update
Childline - not just a phone call The Childline website has lots of valuable information, but one area is that is particularly helpful is their Calm Zone. The activities aim to help children feel better when they're feeling anxious, scared or sad. Although children could be encouraged to visit the website themselves, these are good techniques for adults use with children. Ideas include: breathing exercises, a 'let it go' box and creating a 'sense drawer'. Go to the Childline website here: www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/calm-zone/
Safeguarding our children is everyone’s responsibility
Matched/Community Funding from local, national and international companies Did you know that most companies have community funding which can be used to match fund school projects? We would be very grateful if each and every parent/carer could ask whether their work place have such funds available for our school. We recently heard that employees of PD Ports can access such funding- if you work for PDPorts please do get in touch with Mrs Whelerton via our school office 01642 581239. Thank you.
RHSE (Relationship, Health and Sex Education) Policy and curriculum consultation meetings for parents/carers. We have organise two meetings to share the work we have begun to develop our RHSE policy and curriculum and to consult on the content - Tuesday 24th March 4.30 p.m. on our Trinity site and Wednesday 25th March 9 a.m. on our Rosehill site. Please note both meetings will have the same content and we invite you to attend either meeting i.e. it doesn’t matter which site your child’s class is. We look forward to sharing our plans with you.
Maths workshops for parents/carers Following the success of our Y3 maths workshop for parents/carers where Miss Cook, our maths lead, shared details of the mastery approach to teaching maths and some of the resources such as Numicon we use in school, we will be holding similar workshops for parents/carers in other year groups. Look out for details and dates coming soon…………
World Book Day – Thursday 5th March This will be a “non-uniform day” with a donation (suggestion of £1) which will be spent on books for our children in school. We invite our children (and staff) to come to school dressed as a “word” so you could dress as a princess, “me” (and come to school in your “non-uniform” clothes) or even “red” and take part in our Vocabulary Parade. We are looking forward to seeing lots of imaginative “word” outfits in school The focus of this year’s World Book Day is “Share a million stories”.

Costume donation Do you have a “nativity” costume that your chid no longer fits into? If yes please would you consider sending it into school so that we can build up our collection of costumes so that hopefully in time we can supply all costumes for our Christmas performances? Please send into school via your child or drop into one of our school offices. We also welcome donations of other costumes for our younger children which they can use in their play. Thank you in advanced for your donations of “pre-loved” costumes.

PE and Sport news Children have been working very hard in PE lessons this month. Years 3-6 have just finished their netball topic and will start their hockey topic next week. Reception- to Year 2 are currently working on improving their team work skills. After school clubs have started and are very popular. The Year 5 and 6 football team attended a football competition this week. They competed against many other schools and had a great time. Thank you to Miss Kelsey, Mrs Carson and Jack (our Sports Coach) for accompanying them. Let's stay active everyone
Mid-year reports On Thursday 6th February your child will bring home a mid-year report. We developed this report to keep parents/carers informed of the progress their child is making and to share next steps in learning – this is in response to the feedback we received in our annual questionnaire for parents/carers in the autumn which indicated parents/carers would like more information about how their child is progressing in school. Accompanying the report will be a letter explaining the new format and an invitation to discuss the report in more detail at our consultation meetings for parents/carers on Tuesday 11th and Thursday 13th February. Parents/carers may feel that this mid-year report is detailed enough and does not need discussing and therefore there is no requirement to attend a consultation meeting. We hope you find your child’s midyear report informative and beneficial, Mrs Swift. My clothing
www.myclothing.com/ueslink/23407.school For every item that is purchased via My Clothing school receives 5% donation. Orders are delivered to your home address and within 14 days. PE bags and book bags As discussed with our children earlier this year, from September 2020 (to give parents/carers time) we are requesting that children only bring to school a book bag ad a drawstring PE bag. Not only will this free up valuable space in our cloakroom areas (which on days are a Health and Safety hazard) but it will promote our message about branding and pressure to have the best “Smiggle” backpack which we know are expensive. Staff have been able to fit both indoor and outdoor kits into one PE bag. Both drawstring PE bags and Book Bags can be purchased from www.myclothing.com Thank you for your cooperation with this expectation which will begin September 2020.

January 2020 Attendance Report This year we are celebrating 100% attendance of individual children in each class. Following feedback the number of children with 96.7% or better attendance is now also included – 96.7% was our whole school attendance last academic year.

We expect 100% attendance from all of our children however we understand that from time to time children can be poorly – and we really appreciate parents/carers keeping children away from school who have experienced vomiting and/or diarrhoea for 48 hours- or need to be absent for other exceptional reasons. Please remember to contact school on the first day of absence before 9a.m. 01642 581239. You will be asked to explain why your child is poorly - this is so that school can monitor any illness and take steps to prevent further illness if deemed appropriate. This academic year there are a number of children who have been absent from school or have been taken out of school during the day to attend routine appointments with dentists or opticians. Please can we request that children are only taken out of school for essential and unavoidable appointments e.g. consultant appointments. Our Governing Body continues to monitor attendance and may consider changing our Attendance Policy so that unnecessary appointments during the school day may be classed as unauthorised absence. If updated our Attendance Policy will be shared with parents/carers at the earliest opportunity.

From apples to IPads – the journey of our amazing Children’s Fundraising Committee
In October 2018 a group of our then Y6 children came to see me. “Mrs Swift, you know we are always
fundraising for others and for children in our school, we were wondering if it would be possible for us to help?”
they asked. Well you don’t get an offer like that every day and from there our Children’s Fundraising
Committee was formed.
With support from Mrs Currie (our School Business Manager) and Mrs McGee (a Teaching Assistant in school)
and I, we arranged our first committee meeting. At this meeting we outlined the roles required for a committee
to function which include chairperson, secretary and treasurer and these roles were nominated and duly
elected by the group of Y6 children. And then to business…………
Following a suggestion it was decided that the first event was to be a “pop up” apple sale at the end of the
school day. We are lucky to have a number of apple trees in our school grounds and Mrs McGee and the
committee dutifully picked the apples, bagged them and sold them on Friday after school. They had surplus
stock and decided to hold another “pop up” sale the following day on our other school site.
From then on the committee met on a monthly basis planning their next events. It was explained how to
budget and that profit from events could then be used to purchase items for the next event. A Winter Warmer
soup event was planned but wasn’t as popular as excepted so we reviewed how we could improve marketing
and the committee made plans for their next event – a stall at our Friends of Holy Trinity Rosehill Christmas
Fair.
It was at our November 2018 committee meeting that our children decided that they would like their
fundraising to purchase much needed IPads for children in our school. Once we shared this fundraising goal the
support for our Children’s Fundraising Committee soared!
At the Christmas Fair members of the committee prepared and sold reindeer dust and other decorations and
made so much profit that it was decided that we would put up a display - in the style of thermometer – with
the aim of fundraising £1,000 by July 2019 which I said would be
match funded by Special Fund to enable us to purchase 6 IPADs.
And from there the committee flourished! With a hugely successful
Book Sale during
World Book day
(advertised in
school by
committee
members and advertised on our school Facebook page) and a
hugely successful Sponsored Silence during Lent, the
committee then went on to plan “Fun Day Friday” which took
place on a sunny afternoon in July 2019.
By the end of this event the children had raised over £2000! I invited members of the committee to present
their work to the Resources committee of our Governing Body. Our Governors were so impressed by their skills
and determination that they voted on using some of our Devolved Formula Capital funding to support their
work.
Holy Trinity Rosehill CofE Primary School - continued – Page 9
And so just before most of the children left our school to start their journey to secondary school it was my
pleasure to meet with them to share the news that not only had they raised enough money to purchase 6 IPads
but indeed their fundraising was going to be used to enable school to purchase 60 - 10 times their original
target- IPads for school. 30 IPads for each site.
As you can imagine they were overjoyed.
And their work didn’t stop there. Days before they left our school they invited some of our then Y5 children to
learn from their experiences and to plan for future events. So we continue to have an amazing Children’s
Fundraising Committee.
So from apples to IPads – due to the amazing commitment of our children we now have 60 IPads which we can
use. We are truly blessed.

10 Books to support children’s mental health and well-being
1. The Bear Who Stared by Duncan Beedie
This humorous book about a socially awkward bear is great for showing children how they could try to make friends.
2. Silly Billy by Anthony Browne
Billy worries obsessively about everything until Grandma suggests that worry dolls might help him to cope better. This book takes a sensitive and gentle approach to dealing with childhood anxiety. Many of Browne’s other books are also good for supporting discussion around emotions.
3. You’re a Rude Pig, Bertie! by Claudia Boldt
Bertie, the rude pig, is a good example of how unkind behaviour can drive away friends – and what you need to do to put things right.
4. Beyond the Fence by Maria Gulemetova
Thomas thinks he knows what's best for his friend Piggy and orders him around. Piggy becomes sad until he meets a wild pig, who helps to show him what true friendship really means.
5.The Huge Bag of Worries by Virginia Ironside and Frank Rodgers
Jenny carries a huge bag of worries with her wherever she goes and is desperate for someone to help her. This book shows children that a problem shared is a problem halved.
6. Happy, Sad, Feeling Glad by Yasmeen Ismail
This is part picture book and part activity book. Children are asked to help draw illustrations of things that might make the animal characters feel happy, thereby reinforcing their own stores of good memories.
7. My Daddy’s Going Away by Christopher MacGregor and Emma Yarlett
Children whose parents often work away from home in the military, or in other professions, could benefit from this book, which is sensitively written by Colonel Christopher MacGregor, based on his own experiences of deployment.
8. Augustus and His Smile by Catherine Rayner
Augustus the tiger has lost his smile and is feeling sad. However, as he starts looking for it, he gradually discovers that joy can be found in all sorts of everyday situations.
9. Sad Book by Michael Rosen and Quentin Blake
This lovely book discusses Michael’s grief at his son Eddie’s death from meningitis. It is reassuring in its message that, while sadness is often unavoidable and difficult, there are better days too.
10. On Sudden Hill by Linda Sarah and Benji Davies
Sometimes strong friendships can break down when a new person joins the group. Try using this book for children struggling with playground politics or those who don’t know how to share friendships.
