The Center for Coastal Studiesis pleased to announce that renowned Marine Ecologist, Leila Hatch, PhD,

will be the Keynote Speaker at the Center’s annual Celebration of Women inScience & Chase-Miller Policy Forum Lecture

on Friday, October 25 from 4 – 6 pm.Dr. Hatch will present “Can you hear me here? Understanding and

protecting underwater soundscapes in US National Marine Sanctuaries.”Leila Hatch works for the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and is based atStellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, a marine protected area managed by NOAA off the coast ofMassachusetts. She studies the ways that animals use sound underwater, and the impacts of noiseproduced by human activities on marine environments. Her groundbreaking work was featured in theaward-winning documentary “Sonic Sea”.

"We are thrilled and honored to welcome Leila as our Keynote Speaker at the Center’s Celebration ofWomen in Science," commented Rich Delaney, President and CEO of the Center for Coastal Studies. "Herwork in marine acoustics is addressing one of the most serious emerging ocean issues, and she is aterrific inspiration to all young scientists.”

Dr. Hatch began working for NOAA in 2006 after serving as a fellow with the US House of Representatives’Resources Committee. She received a BS from Yale College and a PhD from Cornell University, both inEcology and Evolutionary Biology. Her doctoral work used molecular genetic and acoustic tools to identifypopulation boundaries among northern hemisphere fin whales. Along the way she participated in researchprograms off the coasts of Australia, Madagascar, Hawaii, California, and Massachusetts studying potentialimpacts from a variety of human activities (e.g. whale-watching, vessel traffic, military sonars, activeacoustic research sources) on whale and dolphin populations. The Lecture will be followed by the announcement of the winner of the 2019 Ruth Hiebert MemorialFellowship, awarded annually to women who are pursuing degrees and careers in marine science.“The Center has embraced the goal of supporting young women who want to pursue studies and careers inscience right from its beginning 43 years ago," said Delaney. "Many of those women have gone on tobecome leaders in their chosen fields.”

This event is free and open to all. Space is limited and reservations are recommended. For moreinformation call 508-487-3622 x 103 or email [email protected].

About the Chase-Miller Policy Forum The Chase-Miller Policy Forum is a series of free lectures and discussions designed to educate the public onthe role of science in public policy as it relates to the marine environment. This forum was made possible

by the generous support of Linda B. Miller, PhD, a long-time patron and member of the CCS Board ofDirectors.

On Tuesday, November 19, 2019,the Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) Marine Debris and Plastics Program

will host a community celebration event, the Local Bounty Banquet,to raise matching funds in support of its ongoing effort to recover lost,

abandoned or discarded fishing gear from the ocean.

From 1979 – 1997, CCS held an annual Trash Fish Banquet as a fund-raiser and community outreach event. In a 1990 Boston Globe article, David DeKing, then the Center's executive director, said, "Our original goalwith the banquets was to address the woeful lack of sensibility to the ocean's resources. We've made a real

dent, I think.” Since then, many former “trash fish” species have been featured on

dent, I think.” Since then, many former “trash fish” species have been featured onseafood menus around the region.

This year, the Local Bounty Banquet will continue in the spirit of the Trash Fish Banquet, celebrating theincreased “sensibility to the ocean’s resources” and recognizing the contribution made by commercial

fishermen to the health of the Cape Cod Bay ecosystem. The Banquet will highlight the CCS fishing gearremoval project and will feature seafood and other dishes contributed by supporting chefs.

Since 2013, the CCS fishing gear removal project has involved commercial lobstermen recovering lost, abandoned or discarded fishing gear from the bottom of the Bay (including nets, rope, traps, buoys, cable,

monofilament, etc.) which is then either returned to the owner, recycled or incinerated for electricity.Over 85,000 pounds of DFG has been recovered to date.

The 2019 recovery effort was funded by the NOAA Marine Debris Program.

The Local Bounty Banquet will begin at 5 pm with a cocktail hour at theCenter for Coastal Studies, 5 Holway Avenue, Provincetown.

The evening includes a buffet at St. Peter’s event hall; a brief presentation by Laura Ludwigabout the project and the collaborating fishermen; a slide show depicting scenes from the

project over the years; music by special guests; an exhibit of artwork featuring marine debriscontributed by diverse artists; and special Local Bounty Banquet tee-shirts. Tickets will be

available to the general public for a prix fixe, and will go on sale in November.

PROVINCETOWN 400 EVENTSAbout Provincetown 400

Provincetown 400 today announced that the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has been added to the program of events inSeptember 2020, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Pilgrims first landing in the new world inProvincetown in 1620.

On September 13, 2020, the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus, featuring up to 200 members, will arrive in Provincetown viaferry and will perform three selections that reflect the occasion during a ceremony to honor the Mayflower Pilgrims. An estimated 2,000 members of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants will attend a ceremony inProvincetown Harbor where they will lay a wreath in the Harbor to honor their ancestors. There will be a re-enactment of the signing of the Mayflower Compact, followed by a “Pilgrims Procession” by the GSMD, escorted bymembers of King Hiram’s Lodge of the Provincetown Masons and the New Plimmoth Gard who will march fromProvincetown Harbor to the Pilgrim Monument where they will have lunch.

“We’re honored to participate in marking the historic arrival in Provincetown of the Pilgrims, who were seeking thefreedom to worship and live as they chose, and to honor the Native People who were already here,” said CraigCoogan, executive director of Boston Gay Men’s Chorus. “Provincetown has long been a beacon of freedom for ourcommunity and we look forward to celebrating its unique place in history.”

It was in Provincetown Harbor where the Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact, the first governing document ofcolonial America. The ceremony will take place near the Mayflower II replica, which will be berthed in ProvincetownHarbor from September 10-14.

Provincetown 400 is overseen by the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum, led by co-chairs Dr. K. DavidWeidner, PMPM Executive Director, and Lori Meads, President and CEO of Seamen’s Bank.

“The musical performance by the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus will add a dynamic element to the commemorativeevent. Having the Chorus serve as the anchor for our program will lift everyone’s spirits as we pay tribute tothe Mayflower Pilgrims and to the native Wampanoag people who were here before them,” said Dr. Weidner. “Weare looking forward to welcoming over 500,000 new visitors who will travel during 2020 to Provincetown for the400th commemoration.”For information on events, tickets and sponsorships please visit: www.provincetown400.org
