Facade engineeringThis DIM has been based uponSwiss building standards. For anyproject abroad, the structural engi-neer must verify compliance withlocal building codes, standards andregulations. Structural engineer /contractor are to assume overallresponsibility for the facade engi-neering, including• to determine material and sizes

of all sub framing members• to determine all fastening details

to sub framing and panels

Project specific orderingThe characteristics of the raw ma-terials determine properties andappearance of the SWISSPEARLpanels. Subtile visual differencesmay occur between production bat-ches. Orders should make allowancefor this by itemising quantities ac-cordingly, so that panels for adja-cent surfaces on the same job canbe supplied from the same produc-tion batch.

System Description

CharacteristicsThe SWISSPEARL SIGMA 12 sys-tem consists of large size fiber ce-ment panels, with concealed me-chanical fasteners for high endarchitectural, rear ventilated faca-des.System descriptionThe SIGMA 12 rain screen facadesystem consists out of 12 mm thickSWISSPEARL panels with a maxi-mum net size of 3040�1220 mm(10�4 feet). At the factory, the pa-nels are cut to the required size, theedges slightly chamfered and im-pregnated. Still at the factory, un-dercut holes are drilled into the rearside of the panels. On building site,the cleats are fixed to the rear sideof the panels. After installation ofthe horizontal support rails onto ver-tical sub frame, the panels are hungby the rear attached cleats into thehorizontal support rails. Subse-quently each panel is levelled outby 2 adjusting screws and a loca-ting pin is inserted to prevent thepanel from horizontal wandering.

Undercut anchorUndercut hole is drilled at thefactory at positions as per pro-ject specific requirements [1].

Insert dowel anchor. The squareshaped collar (10/10 mm) standsproud of the panel surface andcorresponds to the square cut outin the cleat to be attached [2].

By inserting the socket screw thedowel anchor expands into theundercut zone of the drill hole.Thus the anchor gets held backand anchoring effect results [3]

PlanningThe SIGMA 12 system calls for ca-reful planning of all facade compo-nents, starting at the very beginningof the project. Based thereupon, allcomponents of the facade systemcan be manufactured according toprecise requirements and can beinstalled on building site the mostefficient way.

ResponsibilityThe architect, engineer, specialconsultant, contractor - as the casemay be - assumes full responsibili-ty for the planning and execution ofthe cladding system, including de-sign and calculations of buildingphysicist and structural engineer,water and vapour management de-sign, construction details, tenderdocuments, specifications, as wellas for all measurements and di-mensioning on building and clad-ding.

Fiber cement panelsSWISSPEARL panels 12 mm forSIGMA 12 cladding systems aremanufactured as ordered accordingto list of panels. At the factory, pa-nels are cut to size, panel edgesslightly chamfered and impregna-ted; undercut holes are drilled intopanel rear side.

Other componentsAnchors, socket head screws, cle-ats, double cleats and horizontalsupport rails and pertaining rivetswill be delivered as ordered per listof components.

Panel jointsWhen needful, it must be possibleto replace a panel in mid facadearea. Therefore provide sufficientjoint width to allow sliding in andout of the panels. Minimum jointwidth is 10 mm (13/32 inch). As pa-nel joints are open, paint supportprofiles black at joints and usethermal insulation with UV resis-tant black top layer.

Ventilation cavityNet cavity thickness is minimum40 mm (1 9/16"). The thermal insula-tion layer must be well fastened tothe wall as not to obstruct the airflow within the cavity.

Ventilation opening at bottomProvide perforated screen at bottomof cavity to keep out rodents/vermin.

Sub framingSub framing consists generally outof brackets and vertical supportprofiles provided locally, and hori-zontal support rail, to be suppliedby SWISSPEARL.

Architect, engineer, special consul-tant, contractor - as the case maybe – assumes responsibility for thedesign, specification and executionof all sub frame members includingall pertaining fasteners.

Butt joints within vertical sub fra-me profiles must coincide with pa-nel joints. Vertical profile lengthgenerally from storey to storey.

CleatsCleats and double cleats are at-tached to the panel rear face onbuilding site. Both double cleats inthe top row at each panel end bearthe panel dead load and are adjus-table in height by adjustment screwin order to level out the panel. Onedouble cleat per panel shall have alocating pin. All other cleats aresingle cleats and are bearing windload only. EPDM U-sections arefitted to the cleats in order to pre-vent rattling noise from wind.

SealantNo sealant shall be used in con-junction with the SIGMA 12 clad-ding system. Where the use is una-voidable, best suitable would behybrid polymer, poly urethane oracrylic sealant, do not use silico-ne, poly sulphide or Thiokol mate-rial.

DimensioningThe sub frame and claddingconstruction is to be calculated bythe structural engineer on the pro-ject, employing FEM (finite ele-ments method) or special facadecalculation programs.

The number of anchors depends onpanel sizes, sub frame design andthe exposure to stresses; and mustbe calculated for each individualproject. Wall brackets and supportprofiles are assumed to be bend-proof.

Storage on building siteFor storage on building site the pa-nels must be protected from humi-dity and dirt. The plastic foil co-vering the pallets serves only asprovisional protection, and is notsufficient for storage.

Protecting the panelsStore the pallets under roof. Wherethis is not possible use tarpaulin.If panels are stored longer than 2months, stack the panels betweenbattens to allow air circulation.

On site storage

Danger during transportationand installationFor transportation, handling and in-stallation all measures must be ta-ken to avoid damage to persons,material or property. All local, state,federal and other applicable safetyregulations must always be com-plied with.

CuttingFor long straight cuts use circularhand saw with pertaining straightedge. Use carbide metal or dia-mond tipped blade suitable for fibrecement. Use system with automaticdust extraction.For small cut out in panel use pen-dular jig saw with carbide metalblade.

Additional undercut drill holesIn case any additional drill holesare needed for additional cleats,undercut holes may be drilled onbuilding site with special drillingmachine KS-HV. This tool may berented from either SWISSPEARL orfrom anchor manufacturer. Instruc-tion for use of the tool to be follo-wed strictly.

Instruction for using hand applicatorfor LUKO impregnation liquid:

1 Panel edge must slightlychamfered, clean and dry

2 Remove protective cap3 Hold applicator with tank upwards4. Apply sponge at right angle to

panel edge and run with moderatepressure twice over panel edge(forth and back)

5 Caution, do not allow LUKO toflow onto panel front face,remove immediately

6 Check that LUKO has beenapplied over entire edge length

7 Put cap on when interruptingthe job

8 Replace sponge when worn9. Store and use LUKO at

min. +5°C (+41°F)

Fabrication dustRemove dust from cutting and dril-ling immediately

Dry dustRemove best with vacuum cleaner,or with a dry soft and clean cloth orbrush.

Wet dustLeaves stains on panel coating.Therefore wet dust must be remo-ved immediately with plenty of wa-ter and a sponge or soft brush. Toremove stains, use solution of ace-tic acid in water.

Double cleat Double cleat

80 mm wide double cleat in aluminium with cut outs for two undercut an-chors, EPDM U-section level adjustment screw and hole for locating pin.

The double cleat is provided with a thread for the stainless steel level ad-justment screw M6�16 mm. There is a ∅ 3.8 mm drill hole for stainlesssteel locating pin of ∅ 3.6 mm. Install 1 pin per panel systematically inthe same position. Use 2 pins for narrow vertical panels.

AppearanceWith varying angles of viewing andchanging incidence of light, the iri-descent surface of REFLEX presentsa different aspect to the beholder.This effect is influenced by the di-rection the panels are manufactu-red. To achieve consistency in theaspect over an entire façade, fromwhatever angle it is viewed, thepanels must come from the samebatch and must be installed orien-ted aline.

IdentificationOn the back of every REFLEX panelarrows indicate the direction of pro-duction orentation.

QuotesRequests for quotes must alreadystate the direction of production forevery parcel of panels. This infor-mation determines the number offull panels required for the job inquestion.

InstallationInstall all panels orientated alike.No matter how small the job, thearrows on the back of all the panelsmust point in the same direction.

Where this requirement is notstrictly observed, panels that areorientated incorrectly will appear inthe facade as color deviations.

Correct Wrong

PlanningAlready at the design stage thedirection of production of the panelmust be considered in order to as-sure the consistency in the aspectof the iridescent surface; i.e. allthe panels must be installed eitherhorizontally or vertically throug-hout.

Warranty Letter (Example)With reference to your order n°of 200. and our consignment(s) forabove mentioned building we con-firm that we give a warranty for aperiod of 10 years, beginning ondate of delivery, provided that:

• the panels were cut/drilled at thefabricator’s shop, transported,stored and cut/drilled on the buil-dingsite according to the recommenda-tionsapplicable to Swisspearlpanels as specified in the technicalguidelines valid at the date ofordering/delivery; and

• the panels were fixed- according to our recommendationsapplicable to Swisspearl® panels- with our prescribed system ac-cessories, i.e. rivets, screws, fixpoint sleeves, etc.

This warranty covers• the water tightness and frost re-sistance as well as the mechanicaland physical characteristics of theSwisspearl panels, the averagefigures of which are defined in theEN Standarts and Eternit Standards.• the functional quality of the ac-cessories supplied by Eternit, i.e.rivets, screws, fix point sleeves,EPDM strips, etc.

The warranty does not cover• defects caused or substantiallycontributed to by• inappropriate fabricating and sto-rage (at the fabricator’s shop and/oron the building site), handling andinstallation of the panels• inappropriate application of thepanels for the local conditions• the use of inappropriate fastenersfor the building location and/or subframing

• slight modifications in colourssuch as homogeneous lighteningaccording to test values or alterati-ons due to air pollution or other en-vironmental influences (dust, soi-ling from window sills, metalprofiles, etc.)• damages due to the use of ac-cessories which do not belong toour range• damages due to aggressive clea-ning procedures• damages due to algaes

Any SWISSPEARL product whichdoes not comply with these qualitystandards will be replaced free ofcharge, ex works Niederurnen, onthe condition that Eternit (Schweiz)AG, Niederurnen, are notified withina period of 4 weeks after the appea-rance of any defect. Purchaser’s re-medies hereunder for replacementof the defective product are exclu-sive and in lieu of any other reme-dies, such as

rescission of the purchase contractor reduction of the purchase price,which purchaser might have.In particular, the warranty coversneither the transport costs nor la-bour expenses for dismantling anddumping defective panels and in-stalling new panels. Except for thewarranties set out in this document,Eternit makes no warranty, expressor implied, with respect to the pa-nels and accessories and expresslydisclaims any warranty of merchan-tability, description or fitness forany particular purpose or function.In no event shall Eternit be liableto purchaser or any other party forspecial, consequential, incidentalor punitive damages including, wit-hout limitation, loss of use, profits,revenue or goodwill. Eternit shallnot be liable for failure of perfor-mance hereunder due to force ma-jeures.

Design and Installation• Before start of installation, verify that:- detail drawings have been appro

ved by Swisspearl/distributor- correct fasteners and accessories

have been delivered to site• Sub frames are to be designed bystructural engineer/contractor. Ther-mal expansion/retraction is to beaccounted for by providing fixed/expansion point brackets• Expansion joints within supportprofiles must coincide with paneljoints

• Uninterrupted air circulation, frombottom to top, must be maintainedbehind Swisspearl facade panels• Do not install Swisspearl facadepanels/systems directly onto wallsurfaces of any kind• Do not use any sealant in con-nection with Swisspearl facade pa-nels

Storage and Handling• For off loading lift long palletsfrom short side, using fork extensi-ons. Otherwise lift from pallet longside, setting forks apart to preventpallet from bending.• When lifting pallet up by crane,attach pallet at sufficient supportpoints to prevent it from bending• Stacked Swisspearl panels to bestored under roof. If not possible (e.g. on building site) use tarpaulin tocover the pallets (the plastic shee-ting the pallets are wrapped in, isnot sufficient)

• Pallets/stacks always to beplaced horizontally, and to be keptoff the grade• Never slide panels across oneanother. Lift panels individually toavoid scratching• Panel stacks to be max. 500 mm (2’)high, do not stack more than 2 pallets.When re-stacking panels, insert foamfoil between each panel to protect thesurface. Protect stack adequately• All manufacturer’s labels, in-structions, DesignInstallationManuals must be made available tothe entire staff on building site.When re-stacking/re-palletising,the instructions must be attachedonto the new stacks/pallets such asto be noticed easily

Fabrication and Handling• Fabricate Swisspearl facade panelswith vacuum equipped power tools• Fabricate Swisspearl facade pa-nels with tools recommended bymanufacturer• Immediately remove fabricatingdust from panel• Never use sawing system withwater cooled blade

• After saw cutting, each paneledge must be sealed by usingLUKO impregnation liquid• Do not allow LUKO impregnationliquid to flow onto the panel face• Install Swisspearl facade panels/systems by contractors trained &instructed by Swisspearl/distributor• Make sure that dust is removedfrom face and back side of panelprior to it’s installation• If a panel is to be rested on it’sedge, use protection pads to avoiddamage

Cleaning• Do not clean Swisspearl facadepanels by dry methods• Immediately remove cement tainsby applying a solution of 10% aceticacid in water, allow to react 5-20 mi-nutes, but do not allow to dry out.Follow up with a cold, clean waterrinse. If required, use high pressurewater blaster at 40-80 bars (580-160psi), always test this methodon in-conspicuous panel area• Never clean a facade in thebright sun light
