The Opportunity and Summary of Position The College of Coastal Georgia (CCGA) seeks an inspiring and inclusive servant leader as the next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The College recently named Dr. Michelle Johnston as its new president. The next provost of CCGA will have the opportunity to build upon a decade of expansion and innovation in partnership with the new president. The community is poised to build CCGA’s stature as a leader in access education as it lives in the region and beyond. CCGA’s next provost will be an energetic and creative leader with the experience and capacity to capitalize on the College’s remarkable success. The Provost is the College’s chief academic officer and the senior member of the President’s Cabinet, providing leadership for the faculty and working collaboratively with the various constituencies to carry out the mission of the College. The provost is responsible for fostering academic excellence, providing guidance in the development of the curriculum, planning and implementation of academic policies, the management of academic services, and overseeing the overall budget for all academic units. (See Appendix for detailed list of responsibilities for the position.) Reporting to the provost are the school deans for Arts & Sciences; Business & Public Management; and Education, Health Sciences & Nursing. Also reporting to the provost are the Assistant Vice Presidents, the Dean of the Library Services, the Director of Institutional Effectiveness, the Director of the Camden Center, and the immediate office staff. The successful candidate will have a distinguished record in teaching and academic administration as well as a deep commitment to academic quality and student success coupled with an understanding of public higher education, particularly in the context of a complex state system. The provost will be an academic leader of vision and energy, have an inclusive and empowering leadership style and demonstrate a strong commitment to the growth and diversity of both faculty and students. They will foster collaborations across campus and possess the collegial and transparent values necessary to lead within an environment of academic shared-governance. The provost should have strong communication skills, including the ability to use diplomacy, inclusion and consensus to lead change and inform decision-making. With the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools scheduled to visit in 2021, the provost will also benefit from recent experience in regional accreditation. An earned doctorate or an appropriate terminal degree and the qualifications to hold tenure and the rank of professor in one of the College’s programs are required. Persons holding administrative positions serve at the pleasure of the President and perform an appropriate combination of College and community service activities. CCGA is an undergraduate, public institution of higher education and is part of the 28-institution University System of Georgia. Located on the southeast Atlantic coast in the port city of Brunswick, midway between Savannah and Jacksonville, Florida, the College provides an affordable and interactive education in the natural beauty and abundant sunshine of Georgia’s Golden Isles, an area noted for world-class golf courses and resorts, as well as amazing diversity of coastal and marine habitats, wildlife and natural resources. The College Faculty relish and support student interaction, serving as mentors, advisors, co-authors, and even interveners on behalf of students beyond the hours of classroom preparation and teaching. Students are known by name, not only by classmates, but by faculty and staff. The vision of the College is to be a college of choice for students within Georgia and beyond,

providing an accessible and affordable high quality education. Advocating excellence in scholarship and community engagement, the College promotes student leadership, academic progression, and timely graduation through student-centered programs. With the growing number of baccalaureate degree programs, international study, and wide range of student activities, the College offers a rich and diverse student experience. More information about CCGA can be found at: http://www.ccga.edu. For more information regarding a nomination or an expression of personal interest in this position, please see the section entitled, “Procedure for Candidacy” near the end of this document. Opportunities and Expectations for Leadership The provost will also address the following critical leadership opportunities and challenges: Foster Collaboration and Transparency To succeed, the provost must be an excellent communicator and embrace an inclusive, team-oriented approach to managing the academic enterprise. The incoming provost will be expected to build productive, collaborative and healthy working relationships with all constituent groups, including his or her leadership team, deans, faculty, staff, students, administration, and the community. They will be viewed as a visible, accessible and approachable leader who communicates openly, solicits input and provides timely feedback on decision-making. The provost is responsible for providing institution-wide leadership in general and academic leadership specifically as well as for making a host of strategic academic and personnel decisions. The provost will partner with the president, members of the cabinet and the deans in a collaborative manner to enhance the coordination in areas that affect the institution as a whole. In order to realize this commitment, the provost must quickly establish productive and collaborative relationships with key constituents across campus, such as Faculty Senate, Staff Assembly, and the Student Government Association, to foster a culture of mutual respect that acknowledges the expertise and commitment of faculty and staff to the College and its mission. They will also develop transparent decision-making processes and regularly communicate the goals and outcomes of these processes to the campus as an essential component of establishing and maintaining trust. Commitment to Shared Governance The provost will embrace and enhance a strong commitment to shared governance structures and principles. Operating in a state system context adds an additional dynamic to the governance structure and administration of the campus. The provost will be expected to build productive and healthy working relationships with the Faculty Senate and lead through collaboration, transparency and inclusion. This individual will also recognize, support, and encourage close, collaborative work with the faculty to sustain and strengthen shared

governance processes in which faculty are not simply pro forma consultants, but share in decision-making, responsibility, and accountability. Develop Vision and Promote Academic Excellence A robust, attractive and innovative array of programs will attract students, donors, and grant funding – all important areas of attention for the next provost. They will assure the offering and development of academic programs of the highest quality and will fully engage the faculty to help create an academic plan that is strategically aligned and financially viable. As such, the provost will lead a participatory effort to develop a transformative vision for Academic Affairs to promote innovation and excellence acknowledging the current challenges faced by institutions of higher education in the context of an undergraduate-focused college. As the academic leader, the provost will lead with enthusiasm and creativity to help the educational experience evolve in new ways and into new areas, while reflecting the institutional commitment to the access mission. The provost will support progressive programs, interdisciplinary collaboration and experiential learning which is grounded in the liberal arts while also ensuring first class professional education. To accomplish this goal, the provost is expected to embody and fulfill a commitment to academic excellence and teaching quality across all programs while capitalizing on opportunities to leverage strengths in ways that benefit the entire College. Build on Success and Create the Infrastructure to Support Growth CCGA has a remarkable story to tell about its successful evolution from a two-year college just ten years ago, and now has the opportunity to capitalize on this success, raise its visibility and establish itself as an innovator. The new provost is expected to play a significant role in defining the academic vision and setting a strategic direction for the College, continuing to think proactively about new opportunities to better serve the community. As higher education continues to change in response to shifting demographics and a dynamic economy, CCGA must strive to exceed student, family and community expectations. CCGA has experienced rapid growth in several areas of the institution. However, while growth is expected to continue, not all areas of the institution will advance at the same rates. The provost and senior leadership must ensure that the College’s administrative structure, services, processes and budget model are designed to solidify gains to date, sustain current programs and support future development. The College seeks a provost who can analyze the College’s strengths and potential, utilize data effectively to inform institutional direction and decisions, and deploy resources in alignment with its plans as well as new opportunities that arise. Enhance Engagement with its Constituents A long-standing value of CCGA is its sense of place and community. Students, faculty and staff are supportive of one another and share a commitment to enhancing the College’s success. The next provost is expected to continue to uphold that spirit of community, collaboration and inclusivity and to identify ways to tap into and engage the community in visioning and planning for the future. As a college with two distinct campus communities in the region, CCGA also has an opportunity to create and demonstrate effective integration and communication that maximize the student experience, faculty engagement and collaboration along with innovation

in program development and delivery. Recognizing CCGA’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, the provost is expected to establish priorities and expectations for a level of engagement and support services that meet the needs of its diverse traditional and nontraditional student as well as create opportunities to grow the diversity of the student body, faculty and staff. Additionally, CCGA has a long-standing commitment to community service and has established strong local relationships in Brunswick and the surrounding communities. As the leading provider of undergraduate education in the area, CCGA must explore partnerships that will mutually benefit the College and the region. Build and Develop the Faculty In recent years, there has been a focus on attracting faculty in specific areas of need, while striving to support excellence in teaching and learning across the College. Active recruitment of faculty will continue to reflect growing enrollment and faculty movement toward retirement. As a result, the provost will have an opportunity to build and shape the faculty, in conjunction with the deans, and in ways that will influence the course of the institution for the future. A focus on faculty diversity, celebration of faculty accomplishments as well as support of professional development will be key to that success. These efforts will require excellent communication and leadership skills at all levels – from the interpersonal skills to engage meaningfully in a difficult conversation, to the ability to command a diverse audience in a public setting on a range of topics.

College of Coastal Georgia: An Overview The College of Coastal Georgia (CCGA) is located in Brunswick, Georgia, midway between Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. The campus is situated in the center of the Golden Isles, a growing community of more than 100,000 people. CCGA is a four-year state college that includes an off-campus instructional site (Camden Center) in Kingsland, Georgia. As one of 28 institutions in the University System of Georgia (USG), the CCGA abides by policies and procedures established by the Board of Regents. In June 2008, with approval from the Board of Regents, Coastal Georgia Community College became the College of Coastal Georgia, authorized to grant baccalaureate degrees, following its designation as a state college within the University System. In December 2008, the College was granted initial approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) as a Level II institution to offer five new baccalaureate degree programs – Bachelor of Business Administration in General Business; Bachelor of Science in Education in Early Childhood/Special Education; Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (pre-licensure), and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN). In March 2009, as part of the transition to state college status, the College sought and received approval to discontinue its technical college programs effective July 2009. At its June 2010 Board of Trustees meeting, SACSCOC re-confirmed the College as a Level II institution authorized to offer baccalaureate degrees. Since that time, the College has developed 14 additional baccalaureate degree programs, bringing the total to 17, with Environmental Science and Health Science pending approval.

Strategic Plan The College of Coastal Georgia has seen a tremendous change over the past several years. The initial strategic master plan, 2020 Vision, provided the roadmap as the College of Coastal Georgia made the successful transition from a two-year community college to a four-year state college with trail-blazing rapidity. But as rapid as that change has been, the landscape of higher education in Georgia is shifting faster than the sandbanks along the St. Simons Island beach.

During the 2014-15 academic year, the College undertook an inclusive, rigorous and synergistic strategic planning process. Through thoughtful deliberation and reflection, five strategic themes (Student Enrichment, Academic Excellence, Institutional Distinction, Leadership through Community Engagement & Partnerships, and Sustainability & Organizational Development) were formulated to serve as key pillars with foundational strategic goals and objectives to support the College’s mission, vision and core values. The result of this planning process was the creation of Coastal Vision 2021. This institutional strategic plan provides schools, departments, and offices on both the Brunswick campus and Camden Center a guide for navigating through planning and resource allocation decisions. www.ccga.edu/strategicplan
