The use of antidepressant medication in the UK has increased five-fold since 1991, new data reveals.

It also showed that the use of such drugs had increased by 20 per cent each year across Europe over asimilar period.

This increase in uptake across Europe was found to have coincided with a gradual decline in suiciderates.

Experts said that data collected over past 30 years provides 'strong evidence' that

antidepressants are playing a key role in treatment strategies for depres sion

Between 1995 and 2009, the use of antidepressants across Europe increased by almost 20 per cent peryear on average, with a corresponding 0.8 per cent annual reduction in the suicide rate.

Researchers, including David McDaid from the London School of Economics and Political Science, saidthat data collected from 29 European countries over three decades provided strong evidence thatantidepressants are playing a key role in treatment strategies for depression.

However, he said that other factors should not be discounted - such as a countrys economic state, cultural mores and access to psychological services.

Interestingly, the report found no consistent relationship between suicide rates and alcohol consumption, divorce, or employment rates.

    EUROPEAN ANTIDEPRESSANT USE: THE STATISTICS

UK use has rocked 495% since 1991Between 1995 and 2009 use of drug rose by 20 per cent across EuropeSweden, Norway and Slovakia have seen the largest growth in usage with an 1000 per centincrease in Swedens case between 1980 and 2009

The lowest rates were recorded in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Bulgaria, France andLuxembourgIcelanders are the heaviest users with previous studies suggesting that almost 9 per cent of thepopulation taking daily dosesWhile suicide rates have fallen across Europe, suicide still remains a major public health problemin the EU countries, accounting for 60,000 deaths each yearLithuania has highest suicide rate followed by Hungary, while Greece, Italy and Spain are at theother end of the spectrum, with suicide rates the lowest in the EU

Sweden, Norway and Slovakia have seen the largest growth in antidepressant usage with an 1000 percent increase in Swedens case between 1980 and 2009 while the lowest growths have been recorded

in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Bulgaria, France and Luxembourg.

The United Kingdom has recorded a five-fold increase (495 per cent) in the use of antidepressantssince 1991 and a 14 per cent fall in suicide rates over the same period.

Icelanders are the heaviest users of anti-depressants with previous studies suggesting that almost nine

per cent of the population take daily doses of medication, compared to just four per cent in Romania.

While suicide rates have fallen across Europe, suicide still remains a major public health problem in theEU countries, accounting for 60,000 deaths each year.

Lithuania has the highest current suicide rate followed by Hungary, while Greece, Italy and Spain are atthe other end of the spectrum, with suicide rates the lowest in the EU.

Mr McDaid, an LSE mental health policy researcher, said the data showed that suicide rates haddecreased more in countries where there had been a spike in the use of anti-depressants on a regularbasis.

'These findings underline the importance of the appropriate use of anti-depressants as part of routinecare for people diagnosed with depression, therefore reducing the risk of suicide,' he said.

Lithuania has the highest curre nt suicide rate followe d by Hungary, while Gree ce,Italy and Spain are at the other end of the spectrum , with suicide rates the lowe st in

    the EU

'The stigma surrounding antidepressants has decreased in line with improved awareness of mentalhealth problems over the past 30 years, more counselling services and safer medication options.

'Increased funding for mental health systems has also helped make anti-depressants more affordableand accessible,' he added.

'A decline in suicide rates cannot be linked directly to antidepressants but the evidence in support ofthem when used appropriately is pretty compelling,' he added.

The findings of the study, Antidepressant utilization and suicide in Europe: an ecological multi-nationalstudy are published in the latest issue of the Public Library of Science (PLoS One).

Sunshine deprivation + endles s rain and long grey, cold wet winters + ugly fat women = guaranteed depres sion. It's no

coincidence that the lowes t rates of depress ion are found in countries with lots of sun and warmth and cute chicas. For

those s ingle men out there who suffer from depress ion, my advice would be to bin your Prozac, sell your house/wife and

buy a one-way ticket to Bangkok (where you won't need them).

Depression is a very serious il lness, that can have genetic links and leads to the deaths of many people, as publicized

by the DM over the last few months. It is important we don't trivialize this many for the genuinely and severely ill, but yes in

some cases people without true mental illness are given these pills on a whim and that is wrong.

@ Had to be said..... I suggest you do the research that I HAVE done. It's the worrying that CAUSES the neural chemical

imbalance. Depress ion is a nominalisation: a verb turned into a noun. The infinitive form is to "To depress." Who is

doing the depress ing? The patient. They get angry (like you?) because they think it "must" be an external cause and lie

outside them, or something else is the active agent to their pass ivity. It couldn't possibly be them. I sugges t you begin to

think outside pharmacy and propping up drug companies profits. First clue is the lack of quality sleep Depress ers suffer

from. I sugges t you open your mind rather than mind-reading what you think I know.

Antidepressants can be vital for many people suffering from real, clinical depres sion. If awareness is raised so there

isn't quite as much s tigma about seeking treatment, then yes more people wi ll find the courage to go to the doctor and

Anti-depressants s hould be better regulated, the prescription - if abs olutely essential - should only be for three months,

renewable monthly. I know people who have been taking Prozac for years, surely this cannot be good for anyone. Life

throws all sorts of things at you, you jus t have to get on with it - how did we survive without all these drugs?

Too many people have been bossed into doing more and more, rushing everywhere faster, for less in return. Sooner orlater, anybody would snap. We were never intended to be unceasing office or warehouse robots, for multi-national

The use of drugs has increased everywhere. It is a well known fact that drug companies reward doctors for prescribing

their products. The same drug companies continue to push drugs while in the process of class action against them for

causing deaths. My experience with PTSD makes me feel l ike a guinea pig, and the drug of choice is known to cause

deaths, but it is s till prescribed by the medical/psychiatric communi ty. It also has other horrible side effects. A society

experiencing such self-medication via illegal or legal drugs has to question itself as to why people might feel this way.

One of the things I would have included in the research, is the number of refugees exposed to trauma, and the numbers

of men and women returning from traumatic wars. It's really important to research any medication, - because it is linked

    to profit.

The mis take is to think of yourself as a chemical machine that can be tinkered with in order to become 'happy'. People

often take diazepam for a long time and then it makes them depressed s o they run to the doctor looking for an anti-

depressant. They have bloodshot eyes, a fuzzy consciousness, are constantly on edge and probably very thirsty. Your

self-esteem goes becaus e you are depending on a chemical crutch to get through the day. The best thing is to bin the

muck and find your strength and happiness within. Try mediation for a start. A lot of mis ery comes about through thinking

to no purpose, the mind jabbering on to itself, a gerbil on a treadmil l.

quicker than you would on these things. They numb you. You can't feel happy and you can't feel sad...you're basically a

zombie. And they're so addictive. I'd rather go through months or hell without taking anything than years of hell on this

rubbish! Yes...some people really need them, but the vast majority of people on them don't.

The truth is that the treatment and therapy needed to deal with depression can no longer be readi ly supplied on the NHS.

They have to rely on counsellors , who lack the full medical background, and even these have huge waiting lis ts for

patients. So, the answer? Fill 'em up on happy pills , and keep your fingers crossed that the condition doesn't worsen

until they get the therapy they need. It's a s ticking plaster remedy, and this s ociety is driving more and more people to thepoint that they desperately need this help.

It may just be, that since Thatcherism, life has become more depressing. I'm not surprised people are depressed. When

I started work, one wage would keep the household. Now , i f you're lucky enough to be working, even two wages aren't

enough. Life used to be fun and now it isn't, it's all about money and surviving. And the more people that come to live

here, the worse it will get.

Depression, caused mainly by chemical im balance in the brain. The other is Exogenous, or Reactive Depress ion, caused mainly by a reaction to life circumstances, environment or things like loss. If politics and pol iticians screw up, as

the Brussels Commis sariat does so well, causing people to lose work, money, status or family, due to these losses , it

can cause a Reactive Depression. Tablets are rather a was te of time and money for Exogenous Depression if the

These so called "antidepressants" are nothing but evil in the pill. My hubby went to GP with a painful knee and came out

with antidepressants. He changed from then on - became suicidal and physically aggressive towards m e. I put an

ultimatum - he gives up the drugs and becomes the lovely man I once married or we'll have to go our separate ways.

Thanks god he chose sanity, gave up the antidepress ants and now he is back to being normal again - as on that day he

went to GP. I'm convinced doctors get paid by drugs companies to prescribe these dangerous drugs left, right and

    centre.

Point is the drugs are only useful for a short period and by that I mean a couple of years, they mus t also be mixed with

other treatments . I have used them, and they helped me amazingly. Right now I am fine and have been for a long time. If I

spot the symptoms of depression I will have no hesitation to go back to my Doctor and get them again. Just the same as

I would take any other drug for a particular problem. The problem is when people are using these for 5, 10 and even

more years. Then they are either being failed by the health service or they are s imply addicted to the drug and either iswrong, it is not helping.
