Public Relations Society of India is organizing the 39th All India Public Relations Conference during

December 15-17, 2017 at Gateway Hotel, Visakhapatnam. The Conference seeks to explore the

significance of communication in the fast developing smart cities in India in the age of digital

communication. Though traditional media like newspapers, radio and television cannot be set aside,

the digital media impacts the society and facilitates instant communication. Thus, the profession of

Public Relations must transform to gain greater acceptance as an inevitable part of urbanization.

Public Relations Society of India (PRSI), the national association of PR practitioners was established

in 1958. It was set up to promote recognition of Public Relations as a profession and to formulate

and interpret to the public, the objectives and the potential of public relations as a strategic management

function.

PRSI has 25 chapters across the country and over 3000 members. This national association of PR

and communication professionals, through its sustained efforts and campaigns has emerged as a

beacon of PR and Media intelligentsia. PRSI organized the 1st International PR Festival in 2005 at

New Delhi. It was a unique event, which for the first time presented a confluence of three important

PR bodies, viz. PRSI, Global Alliance for PR & Communication Management and International PR

Association (IPRA) . The 2nd International PR Festival which was held in Mauritius in August,

2008, helped to bring closer Public Relation and Communication Professionals of Mauritius and

India. Indo-Thailand Round Table Conference was organized in Thailand during June, 2013.

Each year, PRSI organizes All India Public Relations Conference which has become a place of

confluence for the PR practitioners of the country. The forthcoming 39th All India Public Relations

Conference in Visakhapatnam looks forward to dealing with the concept of smart cities and smart

communication.

This Conference seeks to take a proactive role in developing conversations around the subject,

generate perspectives, analyze and discuss strategies on this important issue voicing opinion of

different stakeholders.

PRSI - Visakhapatnam Chapter

Promoting public relations and all other facets of communication has been high on the agenda of the

Visakhapatnam Chapter right from inception. Over the years it has taken up a plethora of activities

including hosting seminars, workshops, lectures etc on issues which involve larger interest of the

profession. The recent additions to its repertoire are a highly acclaimed internship programme for

media and mass communication students across the state. The Visakhapatnam Chapter since its

formation has hosted many prestigious Conferences. In recent years, the Chapter has adopted a

“move with the times” policy bringing to the fore numerous subjects that are contemporary and in

keeping with the communication culture growing across the globe. Led by a dynamic leadership the

Visakhapatnam Chapter is giving shape to a number of activities that keeps pace with changing skill

sets of the profession owing to the phenomenal influence of digital communication on every facet of

business, governance and Life of the common man. The excellent show by the Chapter is being

increasingly recognized and rewarded at the National level. The Best Chapter Award given by the

national body of the Public Relations Society of India has been bagged by this chapter in the last

three years.

Shri Venkaiah Naidu, Hon’ble Minister for I&B and Urban Development releasing a posterbrought out by PRSI, Visakhapatanam Chapter on the subject of Demonetization on25th November, 2016 at Visakhapatnam.

The theme of the conference is contextual in view of the country’s aspiration to emerge as ‘New

India’. Urbanization of India will accelerate the growth of the aspiring young Indians, who collectively

make India “ Most Youthful Nation of the world”. In the recent survey Swachh Sarvekshan,

Visakhapatnam bagged third place in India for cleanliness and hygiene. The beauty of Visakhapatnam

and the idyllic environments along the beach can be captured as a memory of your participation in

the conference. As you are all aware, the digital communication is the buzzword in the new age, and

a focus on its use in the areas of urbanization is crucial for PR personnel to understand its implications.

The City of Destiny has added anotherfeather in its cap by emerging as the thirdcleanest city in the country during the‘Swachh Survekshan- 2017 survey. Vizag, which bagged the fifth rank in the firstedition of the survey last year, stood thirdamong the 434 cities and towns in India, next to only Indore and Bhopal in MadhyaPradesh this time. Collector Sri PravinKumar, IAS and Greater VisakhapatnamMunicipal Corporation (GVMC) Commis-sioner M Hari Narayanan, IAS received theaward from Hon’ble Union MinisterVenkaiah Naidu at a glittering function inNew Delhi.

Visakhapatnam once a small fishing village, has nowdeveloped into a vibrant industrial town. Its storybegan with the mission of the British to find a suitableseaport that connects the rich mineral belt of Centralprovinces with the East Coast. Vizag is the mostsecure natural harbour in Asia. Another importantmilestone was the setting up of the HindustanShipyard Ltd in 1940. In 1950s and 1960s, theGovernment of India and the private sector set upsome large-scale industries like Bharat Heavy Platesand Vessels (B.H.P.V.), Hindustan Zinc Ltd., CaltexOil Refinery (later acquired by government asH.P.C.L.), Coromandel Fertilizers, Andhra Polymers(now L.G. Polymers), etc. 1980s saw a majordevelopment with the development of Vizag SteelPlant and other major industries. Economicliberalization in the 1990s brought a modest growthto the city but not as much as it did in Hyderabad. However, some industries sprang up like RainCalcining Ltd., the expansion of H.P.C.L., settingup of Vizag Export Processing Zone, SimhadriThermal Power Plant of N.T.P.C., etc. Vizag is nowdeclared as one of ten fastest growing cities of theworld according to a recent study conducted by theUnited Nations. Due to the presence of the EasternNaval Command, Steel Plant, H.P.C.L. etc., the cityhas become home to people from different parts ofthe country and due to this the city has acosmopolitan texture to it. The city's main commercialand shopping centres are located in the DwarakaNagar-R.T.C. complex area and JagadambaJunction area. Since 2000, the Dwaraka Nagar-R.T.C. complex area has transformed into a majorcommercial hub with new shopping malls andcomplexes springing up within a radius of 2-3kilometers. The city is home to many five star hotelssuch as Taj group, ITC Welcomgroup & ParkHotels.
