Bessie Freegard, of Ply- mouth, Pa., and a regular summer visitor to Ocean Grove, writes that The ocean has already re- turned 100 feet of beach to the South End since April 2, when construction of the new timber and stone jetty, just south of Heck avenue, began. Ocean Grove visitors and resi- dents this summer can oxpect one of the best beaches here in a long time, according to J. M. McDowell, state -inspector of the State Aid Project No. 275, Beach Preserva- tion Program;; Natural covering by sand of the boardwalk end of the creosoted timber, groin has started, This groin extends 230 feet from the bulkhead, out to the mean low water mark. A t the 200-foot site, the Thomas Procter co., of Long Branch, successful bidder on the . $89,200 project, began laying stone last Saturday. . ' 600 TONS IN PLACE Yesterday’s official report re- veals that slightly over 600 tons of stone has been laid; The 180-day contract calls for 12,000 tons. Of- ficials of the Procter co. state that they hope to complete the mam- moth project before the end of the summer. / Capstone, with an ■ average weight of approximately four tons each, is quarried in Kingston and Bound Brook, N. J., and freighted here by rail. Trucks bring the huge boulders to ‘the beachfront from the Asbury Park and Ocean Grove freight station, just west of the Stockton avenue gates. Small stone, called core, is used to form; a . 10-foot center of the jetty. This stone is quarried at Bound Brook. The completed jetty will meas- ure 18 feet across the top, with sloping sides. It extends seaward, measuring from the bulkhead, ap- proximately 600 feet. WHAT OF THE PIER? Ocean Grove Fishing club mem- bers are now wondering whether their pier, south of the jetty, will be-left high'and dry. Inspector McDowell offered ho comment when queried on the local anglers’ prob- lem. He parried the question with the declaration that within two years, when mussies and growth gather on the jetty rocks, it will be an ideal feeding place and a bass fisherman’s paradise. A problem facing the Ocean Grove association will be the even- tual extension of the sewer outfall south of the jetty. As the beach builds up; the state will demand ex- tending of the sewer line to the required distance from the low water line. MISS P. ROWDEN CIRCLE HOSTESS The Isabella Thoburn circle met Monday afternoon at the home of Miss Phoebe Rowden, 60 Webb ave- nue, with Miss Bertha Dcen lead- ing devotions and Mrs. Jane Mc- Entee presiding at the busiiies6 ses- the Shawnee Choral society, of sion. Jetty Building Draws Crowds •■■■■■Recent balmy clays have found the boardwalk benches

filled at the foot of Heck avenue, where the new stone jetty is being built. Many interested onlookers are watching the progress of.the laying of the rocks. It is.fascinating to see the giant crane pick up the mammoth boulders and swing them into position in the water, pushing the • great pile steadily seaward. The kibitzer benches are always full when the trucks of stone arrive and the work of laying is in actual progress. ■ ; \ ■

As the season advances, the- sightseers are bound' to grow in number. As a public service, the Association might provide more benches for visitors'. This is a scene never witnessed before on the Ocean Grove beach. The best view of the construction may be had from the Fishing pier, which extends seaward parallel with the. new- jetty. Benches arranged along the north side of the fishing pier would be ideal for the kibitzers.

Twelve thousand tons of rock are to be set in the jetty. Only 600 tons have been placed to date, according to State Inspector J. M. McDowell, who is overseeing the job like a mother hen watching her chicks. So there are many interesting weeks ahead for the kibitzers.

Plain Talk By Dr. Maier,Dr. Walter A. Maier, speaker at the Lutheran Day Rally

in the Auditorium on Saturday, 'July 16th, is the editor of the “DAY BY DAY” gospel devotions. In a recent issue of his publication, he makes some plain talk on present-day evils and proposes the time-tested remedy of the Church.

“ ‘The love of money is the root of all evil,’ and Scripture never exaggerates. An illegal drug ring, with its center in New' York City, takes $100,000,000 annually from narcotic- addicts; What do the masterminds in charge care, if they wreck bodies and minds ? They are getting their profits, aren’t they ? The liquor interests received more than $9,000,- 000,000 in the United States annually; but at what a cost! The greed for gold is behind the gambling orgy by which, for example, people in New York State, for the first time in horse- racing history, day after day bet more than §4,000,000. The love of money is responsible for increasing theft and dishonesty, widespread attack on public morals, and a long list of other crimes. Even religion has not remained uninfected by poisonous profit seeking. Too many churches are determined to heap up wealth; and too many men are in religion today for what they can get out of it. In only one way can we successfully fight this evil — by trusting faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and by a widespread preaching of the blessings He purchased for us with His blood.”

Truman and ByrdSenator Harry F. Byrd, Democrat of Virginia, comment

ing on the government’s fiscal operations, says that the national debt is now “a quarter of a trillion dollars.”

President Truman says he favors economy, but lifts no ax except that of patronage denial to all dissident Democrats in Congress.

Senator Byrd comes back: “The President’s budget submitted in January contains some forty spending proposals which require new legislation by Congress.”

President Truman replies: “There are too many birds- (Byrds) in Congress.”

Economy has become a mercurial word like democracy— something every man sees in his mirror in the morning when he shaves.
