The righteous... are planted in the house of the Lord;they flourish in the courts of our God.

–Psalm 92:12-13

How Deep The Father’s Love For UsHow deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure,That He should give His only Son, to make a wretch His treasure; How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turns His face away,As wounds which mar the Chosen One, bring many sons to glory.

Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon His shouldersAshamed I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers;

It was my sin that held Him there, Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life – I know that it is finished.

I will not boast in anything; no gifts, no power, no wisdom,But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection;

Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer; But this I know with all my heart, His wounds have paid my ransom.

There is a Fountain Filled with BloodThere is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel’s veins,And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains:

Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains; And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.

The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in His day;And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away:

Washed all my sins away, washed all my sins away; And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away.

E’er since by faith I saw the stream, Thy flowing wounds supply,Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die:

And shall be till I die, and shall be till I die;Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.

Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its pow’r,Till all the ransomed church of God are safe, to sin no more:

Are safe, to sin no more, are safe, to sin no more;Till all the ransomed church of God are safe, to sin no more.

Begin Here...1. Before we begin the Seder Meal, look at the diagram below to see how you will set your Seder Plate. But don’t

set it just yet! At your table use this time to talk about each of the items and their meanings.2. Also at this time you will need to designate a “Head” of the table. The Head is usually the eldest man at the

table (or is an elder in the church). The Head will have the responsibility to recite some lines during the Seder as well as to help others at the table to wash their hands.

Haggadah, page 1

“In every generation, a man is obligated to regard himself as if he personally was liberated from Egypt.”–from the Jewish Haggadah

In the very first Passover (Exodus 12), God’s Covenant Children were commanded to observe the Passover once a year for the generations to come. Throughout the centuries, Jewish rabbis have created a ceremony that comes to us today in the form of the Passover Seder (seder is the Hebrew word for “order”). The Seder is unique in that it has been observed for thousands of years with symbolism appealing specifically to children. The Haggadah is a written guide to assist us in re-living vicariously the events of the Passover. Haggadah means “telling” in Hebrew, and helps us to re-tell the story of God’s salvation of His people. This Haggadah is a shortened version but it contains all the major elements of a Jewish Seder (some seders can last all through the night!). In addition, because we are New Covenant Children of God who believe Jesus Christ to be the Messiah and Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world, this Haggadah contains New Testament additions to connect it with the Gospel of Christ (signified with a “†”). The allusions to Christ Jesus have been woven into the service to show how the elements of the meal point to Christ as the long-awaited Messiah.

We hope that tonight’s meal will enhance not only your understanding of the last supper Jesus had with his disciples, but also your appreciation for the Eucharist (The Lord’s Supper under the New Covenant) and the Gospel of Christ, which has saved us from the slavery of sin and death and has transferred us into the Kingdom of God.Exodus 12:24-27 – Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. When you enter the land that the Lord will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. And when your children ask you, “What does this ceremony mean to you?’” then tell them, ‘“t is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.” Then the people bowed down and worshiped.Colossians 1:11-14 – May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

5. Xjrw: URCHATZWASH THE HANDS

Activity: Using the pitcher and basin at the table, wash your hands. As the water is sprinkled over your hands, cleansing them, think about how God’s Spirit pours over us to wash our souls.

6. sprk: KARPASTHE GREEN VEGETABLE

LeAder: The green vegetable is a sign of spring as well as hope. Dipping it into the salt water reminds us of the tears shed by the Israelite slaves when Pharaoh oppressed them in Egypt. Psalm 116:8 declares, “For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling...”ALL: Praised are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, Who creates everything that grows from the earth.Activity: Take the karpas, dip it in the salt water and eat it. You may also eat the egg and other vegetables as an appetizer.to be reAd by the youngest chiLd At the tAbLe (a parent can help if the child is too young to read):I remember when we left Egypt, I held on to my grandfather’s hand.I helped him carry his bundle of food and clothes, even though I could see the muscles in his arms were still tight and strong. When the bundles got heavy, he gave me hope. He said we were traveling to a better world, and to get there we had to cross land and sea. Then he made me laugh! He described the place we were going to as a land flowing with milk and honey. Can you imagine?Activity Led by the heAd of the tAbLe: As we march to a better world –the new heavens and earth– go around the table, each describing one thing we can look forward to in heaven.

7. Xjy: YACHATZBREAKING THE MATZAH

LeAder: The head of the table is about to take one pita from the bag and tear it into two halves. One half he will put back in the bag, reminding us to share with others who have less. The other half he will wrapped in a napkin and keep if for a later time. It is the afikoman and will be eaten at the end of the Seder meal. There are many in the world who are afraid to eat all their bread because they may not have some later – that’s why we keep it in a safe place.ALL: This is the bread of affliction that our ancestors ate in Egypt. All who are hungry, come and eat. All who are in need, come and share our meal. This year we are here. Next year we may be in the land of Israel. This year we are still slaves. Next year may we all be free.eLder: Luke 22:19† – And [Jesus] took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”Activity: The Head of the table will take one pita from the bag and break it in two. One half is put back in the bag, and the other half, the afikoman, is wrapped in a napkin and kept by the Head of the table. Later in the service the children will be invited to search for hidden afikoman.

LeAder: Luke 22:14-16† – And when the hour came, Jesus reclined at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”song: How Deep the Father’s Love for us (see back cover for lyrics)

1. Xmj tqydbSEARCH FOR CHAMETZ (LEAVEN)

LeAder: Exodus 13:3 – Then Moses said to the people, “Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for by a strong hand the Lord brought you out from this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten. ALL: Praised are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, Who has commanded us to remove all chametz.LeAder: 1 Corinthians 5:6-8†Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.Activity Led by the heAd of the tAbLe: Go around the table, sharing with others a sin or struggle you have and from which you’d love to be free. Once everyone has shared, the Head of the table will lead his table in the prayer...ALL At your tAbLe: May all the chametz that I have not seen or removed become like the dust of the earth.

2. SETTING THE SEDER PLATEActivity: Referring to the inside front cover, set your Seder Plate by putting all the elements in their proper spaces.

3. twrn tqldhLIGHT THE CANDLE

LeAder: Praised are You, Adonai, our God, Ruler of the universe...ALL: Who has commanded us to light the holiday candles.Activity: The Head of the table is to light the candle.

4. Cdq: KADESHTHE FIRST CUP

Activity: Take the small cup and fill it to the line with wine (or grape juice). This is the first of four cups tonight.LeAder: The first cup stands for the Hebrew phrase: I will bring you out of Egypt. Exodus 13:8-9 says, “You shall tell your son on that day, ‘It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ And it shall be to you as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth. For with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt.”Men: Praised are You, Adonai, our God, Ruler of the universe, Who creates the fruit of the vine. Praised are You, Adonai, our God, Ruler of the universe, Who has lifted us up through mitzvot and, with love, has given us festivals for joy. God has given us this Holiday of Matzot, a celebration of freedom when we remember how we left Egypt. Praised are You, Adonai our God, Who has set apart the people of Israel and the festivals. Praised are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, Who has given us life and kept us well so we could celebrate this special time.Activity: Drink the cup, leaning to the left (leaning to the left was thought to digest food better and faster).

8. dygm: MAGGIDTELL THE STORY

Activity 1: Pour the second cup of wine (but don’t drink it yet). This cup stands for the phrase: I will free you from slavery. After the second cup of wine is poured, the youngest child at the table asks the Mah Nishtanah – the four questions (a parent may help the child if he/she cannot read):1. Why is this night different from all other nights? On all other nights we eat either leavened or unleavened bread. Why

on this night do we eat only unleavened bread?2. On all other nights we eat all kinds of herbs. Why on this night do we eat bitter herbs?3. On all other nights we don’t dip our herbs – not even once! Why on this night do we dip them twice?4. On all other nights we eat sitting up straight. Why on this night do we all lean?Activity 2: The matzot (pitas) are uncovered by the Head of the table (taken out from their bag).LeAder: We were all slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt. And the Lord our God delivered us from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Had the Holy One, blessed be He, not brought our forefathers out of Egypt, then we, our children, and our children’s children, would still be slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt. And even if all of us were scholars, all of us full of understanding, all of us masters, all of us learned in the Law of God, we would still be commanded to tell the story of how we left Egypt.ALL: Let’s praise God, Who is everywhere; Let’s praise God, Who gave us His Law.eLder: Exodus 7:1-5 – Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country. But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my miraculous signs and wonders in Egypt, he will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites. And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it.”Activity 3: As the 10 plagues are spoken by the leader, everyone is to dip their finger in their cup of wine and let one drop of wine spill out onto your plate – one drop for each plague.the PLAgues1. Water into blood: md (dam)2. Plague of frogs: otrpx (tzerfarde-a)3. Plague of gnats: Mynk (kinim)4. Swarms of flies: bwro (arov)5. Disease and death to cattle: rbd (dever)6. Death of the firstborn: twrwkb tkm (makkat bekhorot)eLder: Exodus 12:1-13 –The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, “This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the people of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the door frames of the houses where they eat the lambs. That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. Do not eat the meat raw or cooked in

water, but roast it over the fire—head, legs and inner parts. Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover. “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn—both men and animals—and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.LeAder: Rabbi Gamaliel taught us, “No Seder is complete unless it includes an explanation of the three symbols: Pesach, matzah, and maror.”Men: Pesach: the roasted bone, reminds us that God “passed over” the homes of the Israelites and spared them from the plagues.WoMen: Matzah reminds us that the Israelites left Egypt in such a hurry, even the dough didn’t have time to rise.ALL: Maror reminds us how bitter the Egyptians made our lives in slavery.

9. ynC swk: KOS SHENITHE SECOND CUP

LeAder (lifting second cup of wine): Praised are You, Adonai our God, Who saved Israel.ALL: Praised are you, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, Who creates the fruit of the vine.Activity: Everyone drinks the second cup of wine, leaning to the left.eLder: Titus 3:3-7† – At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

10. hxjr: ROCHTZAHWASH THE HANDS A SECOND TIME

Activity: Using the pitcher and basin at the table, the Head of the table will help everyone wash their hands.LeAder: James 4:8-10† – Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.ALL: Praised are you, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, Who has commanded us to cleanse our hands.

11. hxm ayxwm: MOTZI MATZAHEAT THE MATZAH

LeAder: Praised are you, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, Who brings forth bread from the earth.Activity: The Head of the table breaks the matzah (that he tore earlier during the Yachatz and put with the other pitas) and gives a piece to everyone at the table. When all are served...the heAd of the tAbLe says: Praised are you, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, Who has commanded us to eat the matzah.Activity: All eat the piece of matzah.

12. rwrm: MARORTHE BITTER HERBS

Activity: With a spoon, take some maror (bitter herbs) and mix it with some of the charoset (fruit mixture symbolic of the mortar made in Egypt) to give it a bitter/sweet taste. The bitterness of slavery is sweetened by hope.eLder: Ephesians 2:13-18† – But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.ALL: Praised are you, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, Who has commanded us to eat maror.

13. Krwk: KOREKHTHE HILLEL SANDWICH

LeAder: In memory of the Temple: When the Temple still stood, Rabbi Hillel would make a sandwich of matzah and maror and eat them together, for it is said, “They shall eat it with matzah and bitter herbs.”Activity: The Head of the table is to pass out a piece of matzah for everyone to fold and make a sandwich. In the sandwich, place the maror and meat (and garnish with whatever else you like, even the charoset). Everyone is to eat the sandwich. [See picture of the Hillel sandwich].

14. Krwo NjlC: SHULCHAN OREKHTHE MEAL

LeAder: Now is the time for the meal. Enjoy the Hillel sandwich, the rest of the food on the Seder plate, and anything in the middle of the table.MessAge: Jeff Levinson, a Messianic Jew and brother in Christ, will share with us.

15. Nwpx: TZAFUNEAT THE AFIKOMAN

LeAder: At the conclusion of the meal, we eat the afikoman, as a reminder of the sacrificial lamb, which was eaten last (the afikoman was the half pita that the Head of the table has kept hidden).Activity 1: The children (ages 10 and under) will be invited to search for the hidden afikoman.Activity 2: The Head of the table is to unwrap the afikoman, break it into pieces, giving each person a piece.eLder: Mark 14:22† – While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”Activity 3: All eat together.Activity 4: Fill the third cup with wine (but don’t drink it yet). This cup stands for the Hebrew phrase: I will save you with my outstretched arm.

eLder: Luke 22:20† – And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.eLder: Psalm 126 1 When the Lord brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed.2 Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord

has done great things for them.”3 The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negev.5 Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.6 He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.LeAder: Let us say the blessing.heAds of tAbLes (in unison): May the name of the Lord be blessed now and forever.ALL: May the name of the Lord be blessed now and forever.heAds: Blessed be He, our God, whose food we have eaten and by whose goodness we live.ALL: Blessed be He, our God, whose food we have eaten and by whose goodness we live. Blessed be He and blessed be His name.eLder: Psalm 1161 I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.2 Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.3 The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came upon me; I was overcome by trouble and sorrow.4 Then I called on the name of the Lord: “O Lord, save me!”5 The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion.6 The Lord protects the simplehearted; when I was in great need, he saved me.7 Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.8 For you, O Lord, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling,9 that I may walk before the Lord in the land of the living.10 I believed; therefore I said, “I am greatly afflicted.”11 And in my dismay I said, “All men are liars.”12 How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me?13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.14 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.16 O Lord, truly I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your maidservant; you have freed me from my chains.17 I will sacrifice a thank offering to you and call on the name of the Lord.18 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people,19 in the courts of the house of the Lord—in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord.

LeAder: In all Jewish Seders, a plate is set for Elijah the Prophet, about whom it is prophesied will come to announce the coming of Messiah. As Believers in Christ Jesus, we believe that John the Baptist was the Elijah who was to come, announcing the coming of Jesus as the long awaited Messiah.eLder: 2 Kings 1:7-8 – The king asked them, “What kind of man was it who came to meet you and told you this?” They replied, “He was a man with a garment of hair and with a leather belt around his waist.” The king said, “That was Elijah the Tishbite.”eLder: Matthew 3:4-6† – John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.Activity: We open the door to see if Elijah has come.eLder: Matthew 17:10-13† – The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?” Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.eLder: John 1:29-31† – The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”

And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.LeAder (lifting the cup): Praised are You, Adonai our God, Who has adopted us to be Your beloved Children.ALL: Praised are you, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, Who creates the fruit of the vine.Activity: All drink the fourth cup, leaning to the left.
