WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY?
As the science of behavior and mental processes,
psychology is an extremely broad discipline. It seeks to
both describe and explain every aspect of human thought, feelings, perceptions, and actions
Psychology as Science:
As a science, psychology relies on the scientificmethod to findanswers to questions. This method involves careful observation andcollection of data, efforts to explain observations by developingtheories about relationships and causes, and the systematic testing ofhypotheses (or predictions) to rule out theories that aren't valid.Pseudoscience's, such as astrology or palm-reading, do not basetheir practices and theories

Branches of PsychologyThere are a number of unique and distinctive branches of
psychology. Each branch looks at questions and problems from a
different perspective. While each branch has its own focus onpsychological problems or concerns, all areas share a commongoal of studying and explaining human thought and behavior.
The following are some of the major branches of psychology
within the field today.
1. Abnormal PsychologyAbnormal psychology is the branch of psychology that looks at psychopathology and abnormalbehavior. The term covers a broad range of disorders, from depression to obsession-compulsion to sexual deviation and many more. Counselors, clinical psychologists, andpsychotherapists often work directly in this field.
2. Behavioral PsychologyBehavioral psychology, also known as behaviorism, is a theory of learning based upon the ideathat all behaviors are acquired through conditioning. While this branch of psychologydominated the field during the first part of the twentieth century, its hold loosened during the1950s. However, behavioral techniques remain a mainstay in therapy, education and manyother areas.
3. BiopsychologyThe branch of psychology focused on the study of how the brain influences behavior is often
known as biopsychology, although it has also been called physiological psychology, behavioralneuroscience and psychobiology.
4. Cognitive PsychologyCognitive psychology is the branch of psychology that focuses on internal states, such asmotivation, problem solving, decision-making, thinking, and attention. This area of psychologyhas continued to grow since it began taking hold in the 1960s.
