Children, Youth & Family Services, Inc. (CYFS)

• Children, Youth & Family Services is all about providing children with what they need to become healthy, happy, productive adults.

• We have three areas of focus:- Early learning to stimulate

young children's development - Counseling and shelter

for youth in crisis- Education and support

•HELP Line is an anonymous, confidential telephone service serving the residents of Charlottesville, Albemarle County and the University of Virginia.

•We are a student-run, student-operated program, staffed entirely of volunteers, affiliated with Madison House

•Volunteers provide callers with a nonjudgmental,empathetic ear for any issue that the caller wishes to discuss.

•Volunteers remain anonymous and are trained to listen to callers with issues ranging from relationship issues to sexual assault to suicide.

•Since volunteers are not professionals, they focus on referring long-term services in the community for callers.

•New volunteers must complete a weekly one semester training program.

• Prospective volunteers sign up for a 7PM-10PMtraining shift on a weekly basis either on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

• Trained volunteers complete weekly 3-hour shifts.

On Our Own of Charlottesville

Through…

•To provide mutual support, self-help, advocacy, education, information and referral services for individuals who acknowledge having significant problems in their lives due to mental illness and who are seeking to take responsibility for their own growth and recovery while supporting each other. We actively advocate for positive change within the traditional mental health system

•UVA volunteers will be involved in various workshops focused on topics such as life skills, health awareness, and self-appreciation, that promote the well being of those seeking support from On Our Own.

• The topics of these workshops will vary each month.

•Madison House volunteers are welcomed members of this unique organization, which functions more like a close-knit family.

• SHE offers emergency, temporary housing to victims of domestic violence in need of safety. There are 20 beds available and priority is given to residents of Planning District Ten (Cville and surrounding areas). Maximum stays at the shelter are 6 weeks with each stay evaluated in terms of the client’s danger level.

• Other services: 24-hour hotline, counseling, case management, children’s programs, legal advocacy, services for the Spanish-speaking community, transitional housing, pet-safe, educational programs
