Reading Comprehension (Questions 21-25)
Read the text below carefully, and answer the questions that follow.
(1) Pretend play is a common form of social play among children aged 3 to 7, in whichparticipants portray different characters – real or imaginary – and take on different roles. Most of the researchers who address this subject, regardless of their theoretical points ofdeparture, agree that pretend play fills an important role in the developmental process.
(5) Researchers from the psychoanalytic school of thought, for example, argue that playenables a child to sublimate his drives and any traumatic experiences he may haveundergone, thereby preparing him for emotional maturity. Researchers from the cognitiveschool of thought point to the importance of play for mental development, that is, fordeveloping language skills, creativity, problem-solving skills, the capacity for abstract
(10) thinking, the ability to concentrate and so on. Researchers who are proponents of thesocial approach emphasize the contribution of play in the development of a wide varietyof social skills, such as cooperation and resolving conflicts.
Another approach that addresses this subject is the interpretive approach, accordingto which pretend play is not just a process that contributes greatly to children's long-term
(15) development, but is also a social process, providing them with meaningful experiences ofan immediate nature, such as belonging and sharing.
Zev Soker, a sociologist who is a proponent of this approach, believes that pretendplay helps children deal with the problems and lack of clarity that are associated withtheir integration into childhood society. He concluded from his research that one of the
(20) functions of play is to allow children to clarify the extent to which they share similarattitudes towards matters that concern each of them individually. Let us, for example, take two children who are pretending to be the parents of a doll. If, while playing, theydecide that the doll is crying, they can use that to find out how much they agree on suchmatters as when crying is "justified" and what a child must do to be considered "grown
(25) up." According to Soker, play dialogue is similar in form to the everyday conversation ofadults, in the course of which they exchange information, opinions and experiences that

they feel the other participants in the conversation might find of interest. From theircompanions' reactions, they can clarify the extent to which their companions share thesame attitudes, problems and experiences which they themselves consider important.
(30) Something similar takes place in play, with one important difference: play dialogueenables children to conduct a "comparison of attitudes" without actually revealing theirown. This comparison is made when children have reason to believe that revealing theirattitudes about certain issues might harm their social image. Soker presumes that theprocess whereby players discover that they share a common understanding, without
(35) risking self-exposure, is the source of their enjoyment of the play. Indeed, observationsof children engaged in pretend play show that when this common understanding isundermined, it leads to a cessation of the play or the withdrawal of one of theparticipants, sometimes accompanied by a fight and an exchange of insults.
A finding from another study, in which children in a day-care center were observed at(40) play, provided indirect reinforcement for the argument that play is a means by which
children can examine the question of whether or not they share common experiences. This study found that none of the situations that arose in the children's play were based onevents that took place at the day-care center itself. Routine events at the day-care centerdo not require a "comparison of attitudes" of the type to which Soker referred, since they
(45) already have something in common: these events are shared by and familiar to all.

Verbal Reasoning – First Section - 24 -
22. According to the first paragraph, which of the following statements regarding"researchers from the cognitive school of thought" (lines 7- 8) is true?
(1) Unlike researchers from the psychoanalytic school of thought, they emphasize therole of play in preparing a child for emotional maturity
(2) Along with the researchers who are proponents of the social approach, theyemphasize the role of play in a child's mental development
(3) Along with researchers from the psychoanalytic school of thought, they believe thatpretend play fulfils an important role in the developmental process
(4) They do not accept the claim of researchers who are proponents of the socialapproach that play helps develop social skills
23. According to Soker, what is the main advantage of pretend play over an everyday adultconversation?
(1) It allows participants to avoid dealing with subjects that trouble them(2) It allows each participant to discover the attitudes of the others without actually
revealing his own attitudes(3) The subjects that arise in pretend play are not subjects that would affect the
participants' social image if their attitudes towards them were to be disclosed(4) In contrast to a conversation, undermining the participants' common understanding
does not necessarily lead to a cessation of the play
24. Why is it that "Routine events at the day-care center do not require a 'comparison ofattitudes' of the type to which Soker referred" (lines 43-44)?
(1) Because children prefer games that contribute to their long-term development(2) Because just being in the day-care center gives the children pleasure(3) Because a comparison of this sort might harm their social image(4) Because the extent to which other children share their experiences at the day-care
center is obvious to the children
25. Which one of the following questions is answered in the text?
(1) Which characters do children prefer to portray when they engage in pretend play?(2) How does pretend play contribute to the development of a child's language skills?(3) Why do children enjoy pretend play?(4) In which situations do children regard crying as legitimate?

16. Ron received a red flowerpot containing a Japanese cactus, and a yellow flowerpotcontaining a Chinese cactus. He was told that if he took care of the two cactuses inexactly the same way, they would grow at the same rate. However, even though he didso, only the Japanese cactus grew. Some time later, Ron removed the two cactuses fromtheir flowerpots and replanted them – each cactus in the soil of the other flowerpot. Afterthey were switched, the Chinese cactus remained just as small, while the Japanese cactuscontinued to grow.
Which of the following hypotheses explains all of the above information?
(1) The soil in the red flowerpot contains a mineral that is vital for the growth ofcactuses, but it is absent from the soil in the yellow flowerpot
(2) The soil in the yellow flowerpot, and only that soil, is lacking a substance that isnecessary for the growth of only the Chinese cactus
(3) The soil in both flowerpots contains a substance that is harmful to the growth ofcactuses, but the Japanese cactus is resistant to it
(4) The soil in the red flowerpot, and only that soil, contains a substance that retards thegrowth of Chinese cactuses

Reading Comprehension (Questions 21-25)
Read the text below carefully, and answer the questions that follow.
(1) Aging is an inevitable process which occurs in all living creatures, with the exceptionof very simple organisms such as bacteria and other single-celled organisms. Manystudies have been conducted in order to understand the nature of the aging process andthe reasons behind it.
(5) One of the phenomena characteristic of aging is the decline in the level offunctioning of the body's tissues. What causes this decline? The body's tissues arecomposed of cells which, in most tissues, are constantly subdividing, therebyregenerating the tissue. There is much evidence to suggest that, in tissues of this type, thecapacity of the cells to divide decreases with age. As a result, cells that for various
(10) reasons have become damaged are not replaced, and the tissue gradually ceases tofunction. Researcher Alexis Carrel wished to examine whether the reason for the declinein the capacity to divide lies in the cells themselves or in extracellular factors that affectthe division process. To this end, he explored how many divisions can occur in cellsgrown in a culture outside the body. He grew embryonic chick cells in a nutrient medium
(15) derived from cell fragments of chick embryos. Each time the dish in which the cellculture was growing became full, he divided the culture into two dishes, adding a similarnutrient medium to both dishes. Since the process continued in his laboratory fordecades, Carrel concluded that cells have an endless capacity to divide outside the body, and under such conditions cells are actually immortal. Carrel believed that inside the
(20) body, by contrast, some of the extracellular mechanisms that control cell division becomedamaged over the years, and it is this damage that limits life expectancy.
Hayflick, whose research was conducted some 40 years after the findings of Carrel'sexperiment were published, claimed that a mistake had been made in Carrel's study, leading him to an erroneous conclusion. Hayflick raised the possibility that some
(25) whole cells had remained in the nutrient medium that Carrel had added to the cultureafter dividing it, and it was these cells that had continued to divide. Hayflick repeatedCarrel's experiment, but was careful to strain the cell fragment medium until no whole

cells remained. This time, completely different results were obtained: The embryonicchick cells divided 30 times, on average, and then stopped dividing. Hayflick
(30) concluded that the body's cells contain a biological mechanism that limits the number ofdivisions they undergo, and when the "quota" of divisions is reached, the tissue'sfunctioning becomes impaired.
Hayflick's theory gives rise to two hypotheses. If there is indeed a biologicalmechanism that determines the number of divisions, then the number of cell divisions that
(35) occur in a culture should be inversely proportional to the age of the organism from whichthe cells were taken. In an experiment designed to test this, cells were taken from peopleof different ages. It was found that embryonic cells underwent some 55 divisions; cellstaken from people aged 20-30 underwent some 40 divisions; and cells taken from peopleaged 65-80 underwent some 18 divisions. The other hypothesis derived from Hayflick's
(40) theory is that the number of divisions of embryonic cells taken from an organism with agiven life expectancy should be greater than the number of divisions of embryonic cellstaken from an organism with a shorter life expectancy. Hayflick grew embryonic cells ofdifferent organisms, and the results he obtained were consistent with his expectations:The embryonic cells of the Galapagos turtle, whose life expectancy is 175 years, divided
(45) some 110 times in the culture. Embryonic cells taken from a chick, which has a lifeexpectancy of 30 years, divided some 30 times. Measurements of the number ofdivisions of embryonic cells taken from other organisms further reinforced Hayflick'shypothesis.
Questions
21. Based on the second paragraph, what is the direct cause of "this decline" (line 6)?
(1) the aging process(2) the decline in the level of functioning of the body's tissues(3) the non-replacement of damaged cells(4) the fact that cells possess the capacity to divide
22. The logic that Carrel followed in conducting his experiment was:If cells grown in a culture outside the body are found to have capacity to divide, this would reinforce the hypothesis that the source of the decline in their capacity todivide inside the body .
(1) a limited / lies in the cells themselves(2) an endless / lies in the cells themselves(3) a limited / lies in extracellular factors(4) an endless / does not lie in extracellular factors

Quantitative ReasoningThis section consists of questions and problems involving quantitative reasoning. Each question is followed by four possible responses. Choose the correct answer and mark its number in the appropriate place on the answer sheet.
Note: The words appearing against a gray background are translated into several languages at the bottom of the page.
General Comments about the Quantitative Reasoning Section
* The figures accompanying some of the questions are provided to help in answering the questions, but are not necessarily drawn to scale. Therefore, do not rely on the figures alone to deduce line length, angle measure, and so forth.
* If a line in a figure appears to be straight, you may assume that it is in fact a straight line.* When a geometric term (side, radius, area, volume, etc.) appears in a question, it refers to a term whose value is
greater than 0, unless stated otherwise.
* When a (a > 0) appears in a question, it refers to the positive root of a.

Chart Comprehension (Questions 10-14)
Study the chart below, then answer the five questions that follow.
The accompanying chart depicts the differences between the consumption habits for various products in Belgium and the consumption habits for those same products in Denmark, in 1970 and 1980. The average consumption per family in Belgium and Denmark was calculated for each product. In addition, a combined average consumption per family was calculated for each country. The chart shows the positive deviation (in percentages) from this combined average. Since the average pertains to only two countries, any positive deviation in one country leads to an identical negative deviation in the other country. The consumption gap is the difference (in absolute terms) between the deviation in one country and the deviation in the other country. For example, in 1970 the average meat consumption per family in Denmark was 5% higher than the average for both countries combined; the average meat consumption per family in Belgium was 5% lower than the average for both countries combined. Therefore, the consumption gap between Belgium and Denmark was 10%.
Note: In answering each question, disregard the information appearing in the other questions.

Quantitative Comparisons (Questions 21-25)
Questions 21-25 consist of pairs of quantities. In each question, one quantity appears in column A and a second quantity appears in column B. The third column sometimes provides additional information about the quantities in columns A and B. This information may be essential for answering the question. Compare the two quantities, using the additional information (if provided) to determine which one of the following is true: (1) the quantity in column A is greater (2) the quantity in column B is greater (3) the two quantities are equal (4) there is not enough information to determine the relationship between the two quantities
For each question, mark the number of the answer you have chosen in the appropriate place on the answer sheet.

Quantitative Comparisons (Questions 5-10)
Questions 5-10 consist of pairs of quantities.

Chart Comprehension (Questions 19-21)Study the chart below, then answer the three questions that follow.
The chart below contains information on the activity schedule of three 1-year-olds – Amos, Barry and Gail – during 24 consecutive hours. It is light from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. (06:00 to 19:00), and dark from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. (19:00 to 06:00). The hours of the 24-hour period are marked on the inner circle. Each ring depicts the activity of one child, and contains the child's name. Each type of activity is represented by a different "color" (see key).
For example, Barry ate between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. (10:30-11:00), and slept between 11 a.m. and 12 noon (11:00-12:00).
Note: In answering each question, disregard the information appearing in the other questions.

Mackenzie King was born on December 17, 1874, in the town of Berlin – now (5) known as Kitchener – in western Ontario. He was the second of four children born to
Scottish immigrants John King and Isabel Grace Mackenzie. A mischievous boy who liked to play jokes and loved the outdoors, Mackenzie King was also a serious student. His father, a lawyer and an outstanding speaker, served as a role model for young Mackenzie King. Both parents had a strong interest in current events and discussed
(10) them in front of their children. Mackenzie King later recalled: "Any idea I may have had as a boy of entering public life was certainly inspired by the interest which my parents took in political affairs."
Mackenzie King devoted almost all of his adult life to his country. As a university student, he took a strong interest in labour problems. His research on labour (15) issues attracted the attention of Liberal Party leaders, who asked him to join the Liberal
Party. In 1900, he helped organize Canada's Department of Labour and in 1909, became the country's first full-time minister of labour. Mackenzie King was elected prime minister for the first time in 1921 and served in this position until June 1926. He served again as prime minister from September 1926 to 1930, and from 1935 to 1948.
(20) Mackenzie King is remembered for his many important achievements as prime minister. For example, he helped make Canada more independent of Britain, improved relations between English-speaking and French-speaking Canadians, and skillfully led his country through World War II. He also worked to increase cooperation between Canada and the United States.

Text II (Questions 23-27)
(1) Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun, is a world of extremes. Mercury's day from sunrise to sunset is equal to 176 Earth-days, making it the longest in the solar system – longer, in fact, than the planet's own year of 88 Earth-days. During the daytime, Mercury's ground temperature reaches 400 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature of
(5) any planetary surface; at night, it plunges to nearly 200 degrees below zero Celsius.
Such oddities make Mercury exceptionally intriguing to astronomers. At the same time, the planet poses special challenges to scientific investigation. Even though Mercury is the third-closest planet to Earth after Venus and Mars, we know almost as little about it as about Pluto, the most distant planet.
(10) Despite the fact that Mercury shines so brightly that it is visible to the naked eye, the planet cannot be studied easily by telescope because of its angle in relation to the Sun. In fact, the best Earth-based telescopes can discern only those features of Mercury's terrain that are at least a few hundred kilometers in width. In contrast, much
smaller details on the Moon can be seen without the help of any magnification at all.
(15) The only way to investigate Mercury, therefore, is to send spacecraft to examine it from a relatively short distance. This has been done only once: in the 1970s, Mariner 10 flew by Mercury as part of a larger mission to explore the solar system. The spacecraft sent back images showing a heavily cratered surface that, at first glance,
appeared similar to that of the Moon.
(20) Unfortunately, these pictures led to the mistaken impression that Mercury differs very little from the Moon and just happens to be located in a different part of the solar system. As a result, Mercury has become the neglected planet of the American space program. To date, there have been more than forty missions to the Moon, twenty to
Venus and more than fifteen to Mars. By the end of the next decade, numerous (25) spacecraft will be in orbit around Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, returning detailed
information about these planets and their environs for many years to come. But Mercury will remain largely unexplored.

Reading Comprehension This part consists of two passages, each followed by several related questions. For each question, choose the most appropriate answer based on the text.
Text I (Questions 18-22)
(1) According to a common stereotype, men are better and safer drivers than women. But in fact, many studies have shown that the most dangerous drivers are men between the ages of 18 and 25. For every kilometer they drive, young males are twice as likely to be hurt in accidents as females the same age. This should not come as a surprise,
(5) since young men tend to drive faster and more carelessly than young women. The combination of recklessness, speed and lack of driving experience can be especially dangerous.
Some people may be surprised to learn that the safest drivers of all are middle-aged women. While both men and women are generally safe drivers in middle age, males
(10) have more accidents than females, according to Helene Fontaine of France's Transport Research Institute. In old age, women are more dangerous drivers than men. According to Fontaine, the elderly are involved in more accidents than the middle aged, and elderly women are involved in more accidents than elderly men.
Fontaine believes that old women have more accidents than old men because many (15) learned to drive late in life. For this reason, they have less driving experience than men
their age. Experience is especially critical for elderly drivers: as they grow older, people tend to respond more slowly to dangerous situations. The more experience a driver has, the quicker his or her reaction time.
Today, the average age at which a woman learns to drive is much younger than in (20) the past. When the people who are now in their thirties reach their sixties, there will be
little difference in driving experience between males and females of that age group. If Fontaine is right, the difference in the accident rates of old women and old men should become much smaller in the future.

Text II (Questions 23-27)
(1) Ice is so commonplace nowadays that it is difficult to imagine life without it. From cooling drinks to keeping food fresh, ice has become part of our daily lives. Of course, this was not always the case. Before the invention of electricity and electric freezing devices, the only available ice was that produced naturally in cold regions of the world
(5) and on high mountaintops. It was only after people discovered methods of preserving ice outside of its natural environment that ice could be used in the ways which seem so obvious to us today.
The preservation of ice is possible due to one of the remarkable qualities of water: its high specific heat. This means that a great deal of energy is needed to raise or lower
(10) the temperature of water. Once heated or frozen, water remains at a constant temperature until the temperature of its surroundings changes significantly. Thus, ice cut from the surface of frozen lakes or snow gathered from mountaintops can be packed into underground chambers and kept frozen year round.
Ice-preservation techniques involving such underground chambers are thought to(15) have originated about three thousand years ago in China, where climatic, geographic
and social conditions existed which were favorable for their development. The hot summers in China caused the emperor and his courtiers to crave cool drinks. Fortunately, the country had the means to satisfy this craving: ready access to ice and
cheap labor. Ice could be obtained, at least during the winter, from the frozen lakes and(20) snow in the country's northern mountain regions. In addition, China had millions of
poor workers whose labor could be exploited to satisfy the desires of the ruling class.
Questions
23. The main purpose of the text is to -
(1) discuss the importance of ice throughout human history(2) explain why some cultures value ice more than others do(3) describe different ways in which people have used ice(4) discuss the preservation of ice and its history

25. The main purpose of the second paragraph is to -
(1) explain why it is possible to preserve ice for long periods of time(2) discuss the inventions which made it possible to use ice as we do today(3) describe the methods used in the past to preserve ice(4) show that making ice requires a great deal of energy
26. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that the specific heat of a substance -
(1) changes depending on whether the substance is hot or cold(2) is the amount of energy required to raise or lower the temperature of the substance(3) is the difference between the substance's temperature and the temperature of its
surroundings(4) can only be measured if the substance is in solid form
27. It can be inferred that "social conditions" (line 16) refers to the -
(1) fact that the Chinese people tended to imitate their emperor(2) conditions which were determined by China's climate(3) existence of a ruling class and a class of workers in China(4) desire of the Chinese to obtain ice

CalCulating EstimatEs of tEst sCorEs
July 2010
An explanation of how to calculate estimates of your scores on the Test appears below. You can calculate estimates of your scores on each part of the test – verbal, quantitative and English – as well as an estimate of your total test score, which is based on your scores in the above three areas.
CalCulating your raw sCoresEach correct answer is worth one point. To calculate your raw score, add up the total number of points obtained in each of the three parts of the test (there are two sections for each of the verbal, quantitative and English parts). At the end of this stage, three raw scores will be obtained:
a raw score in verbal reasoning (from 0 to 50)a raw score in quantitative reasoning (from 0 to 49)a raw score in English (from 0 to 54)
CalCulating your standardized sCoresEach raw score is converted to a standardized score on a uniform scale that is not affected by a particular test version, language or date. You can find your standardized score by referring to the table on p. 106.At the end of this stage, three estimates will be obtained (from 50 to 150):
– a verbal reasoning score (V) – a quantitative reasoning score (Q) – an English score (E)

CalCulating an EstimatE of your total PsyChomEtriC tEst sCorE
In order to estimate your total psychometric score, you must first calculate your weighted score.
In the total psychometric score, the verbal and quantitative scores receive twice the weight of the English
score. Thus, the weighted score is calculated as V Q E5

Converting your sCore into perCentages
The following table, which converts ranges of scores into percentages, will help you understand the meaning of the estimate you have obtained. The table is divided into 17 categories, each containing a range of scores. The percentage of examinees whose score is below, within and above the range is given for each range. For example, if your total score is 518, it will be located in the 500-524 range. Approximately 36% of examinees scored below this range, approximately 9% scored within this range, and approximately 55% received a score that was above this range.
The division into categories is for illustration purposes only, and does not reflect the admissions policy of any institution.
The table for converting scores into percentages is based on the entire population of Psychometric Test examinees in recent years.
