What is Child-ParentPsychotherapy?Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) is treatment for children ages 0-5 and their primary caregivers who have experienced trauma.

When children have been in a situation where they feared for their life, faced injured, witnessed violence, or tragically lost a loved one, they may show signs of child traumatic stress.

This stress can affect a child’s social-emotional health, and cause behavior problems, emotional upset and cause the child to act younger than their age.

Traumatic incidents, and child traumatic stress, can happen to any child and family, regardless of race, religion, socio-economic or ethnic background.

How can CPP help?Depending on the age of the child, CPP uses “talk” and “play” therapy to strengthen the relationship between child and parent, repair the child’s sense of safety and well-being, and address behavior issues.

Is CPP right for my child? If you are the parent or guardian of a child who has experienced trauma, CPP could help your child:

• Feel safe

• Process the traumatic event

• Manage their feelings

• Learn to communicate appropriately

• Stabilize daily living

CPP could help you:

• Understand how the trauma has affected your child

• Respond in a helpful, soothing way when your child gets upset

• Strengthen your relationship

• Stabilize daily living

Who can participate? CPP is currently offered free of chargefor children 0-5 in Boone County and their primary caregivers through funding provided by the Boone County Children’s Services Board.

CPP is appropriate for children living in a birth family home, adoptive home, or foster/kinship care.

The type of trauma and the child’s age determine the structure of CPP sessions. CPP takes place with a licensed therapist at the SOAR office at 1000 W Nifong Blvd., Suite 140 in Columbia.
