Good charpy and CTOD values. Where x-ray quality and excellent mechanical properties are required. Thick sections and restrained joints in mild and low alloy steels where shrinkage stresses tend to cause weld cracking. To reduce pre-heat requirements. To resist cracking in medium to high carbon and hard to weld steels. To resist hot shortness in sulphur and phosphorus bearing steels. To reduce porosity in sulphur bearing steels Vertical and overhead welding.
