Only Three Out of Ten Job-seekingGraduates May Find Work

AS new graduates enter thelabor force, it is possible thatonly three out of ten collegegraduates looking for workmay land a job.

According to research groupIBON Foundation, this esti-mate does not even includegraduates who do find jobs butmay likely take whatever workis available even if these areunrelated to the college degrees.

In previous years some threeout of five college graduatesimmediately join the laborforce. The Commission onHigher Education (CHED) es-timates some 542,000 collegegraduates this year; applyingthis ratio again implies an ad-ditional 325,000 degree-hold-ing job-seekers.

Those who are going to lookfor work will be competingwith 523,000 other unem-ployed graduates as of Janu-ary 2010. This means that comethis summer, there could bearound 848,000 new and oldcollege graduates looking forwork.

By all indications, graduatesface a difficult job market. In

April last year for instance, according to government’sLabor Force Survey (LFS) data, only 256,000 new jobs forgraduates were generated fromthe year before.

If the economy is still onlyable to create this number ofthis year then, in a worst casescenario, only some three outof every ten college graduates(new and old) looking for workthis summer will be able toland a job.

This problem is mitigatedsomewhat if the newly-erupt-ing global crisis early last yearwas a factor that particularlydragged down job creationduring this period.

In any case, the long-termjob prospects of college gradu-ates is not secure where overone in ten college graduates inthe country are actually unem-

ployed– reaching 591,000 outof 5.63 million college gradu-ates in the labor force after theclosing of classes in April lastyear, according to LFS data.

This year ’s new graduatesthus face an uncertain future, the research group said. Manyof them will join the ranks ofthe country’s unemployed job-less college degree holders andwill be joining some 4.3 mil-lion jobless Filipinos as of 2009(based on IBON estimates ad-justing for the government’schange in methodology inApril 2005). Unfortunately, thenational economy is unable togenerate sufficient and decentjobs– making the efforts offamilies to invest in theirchildren’s education not aguarantee that they will belifted from poverty. THE law may be harsh butit is the law - and should berespected.

The recent Supreme Courtdecision giving PGMA thepower to appoint the next chiefjustice drew varied reactionsfrom different sectors of theacademe and the opposition. There’s also mounting calls forthe 9 SC Justices who signed the decision to resign or faceimpeachment if they refuse to reverse their decision (soundslike “blackmail”).

Fact is, there’s only one Supreme Court and it is the finalarbiter of legal issues under our Constitution. “Once it de-cides, such decision forms part of the law of the land as alsoprovided in the same Constitution. Even if one finds the pro-cess unsatisfactory or too difficult, he is not at liberty to carveout a new procedure according to his liking,” said electionlawyer Romulo Macalintal.

Even the framers of the Constitution who disagree overan issue agree to have the issue decided and interpreted bythe Supreme Court.

Kung mismong kumatha ng Konstitusyon natin nagsasalisiang opinion at interpretasyon sa naturang desisyon, lalo’thigit ‘yung mga hindi kasali sa usapin.

Since they never had any participation in putting togetherthe provision of giving the President the power to appointthe next chief justice, they cannot and should not insist ontheir partisan views.

It doesn’t mean that just because a former delegate of the1987 Constitutional Commission said that PGMA cannotappoint the chief justice it could be taken as Gospel truth. There are others who see things differently from the former’spoint of view and the only way to resolve such an impasseis to seek an arbiter which is the Supreme Court.

I may not agree that deputy presidential spokesman GaryOlivar as the brightest among the President’s men but I to-tally agree with him when he chided the protesters and said,“They think they are better than the Supreme Court over con-stitutional issues. Just because they don’t have it their way, they think they have the monopoly of truth and justice.”

Let me repeat, there’s only one Supreme Court and it hasmade a decision, such decision forms part of the law of theland, it may be harsh but it’s the law. Let’s respect the deci-sion.

Problema kasi, marami sa atin ang KNPP (Kontrabida NaPapansin Pa) – mismo!

149 schools violate ‘nograduation fee’ policy

THE National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP)and Kabataan Party-list disclosed that 149 schools from VisayasRegion violated the Department of Eduacation (DepEd) OrderNo.13 or the ‘no graduation fee policy.’

This developed as the two groups called on the attention ofDepEd Undersecretary for Legal Affairs, Franklin Sunga to makeimmediate action against schools that violated the DepEd order.

“With graduation in elementary and secondary schools al-ready underway, parents were forced to pay illegal graduationfees. The amount illegally collected should be immediately re-funded to the parents since the order of DepEd was very clear, nograduation fees or any fees for that matter shall be collected.”NUSP said.

Kabataan Party-list said they received reports that some schoolsask for 5,000 as payment for graduation.

“One odd case was in a Cebu high school where studentswere asked to pay P200 and required graduates with honors tobring ‘litson manok’” Garduce said. Marco Lorenzana

LEADERS of the UnitedOpposition (UNO) have iden-tified the traitors who aban-doned former President JosephEstrada when he was oustedfrom power in 2001.

Leading the pack of desert-ers is vice presidential can-didate Mar Roxas who wasthe Trade and Industry Sec-retary during the Estradapresidency and Angelo T.Reyes, a former military chiefwho is now President

Arroyo’s loyalist.Estrada’s staunch ally,

former Senator ErnestoMaceda, said Roxas evensought the blessing of formerPresident Joseph Estradaearly this year before he de-cided to run for vice president.

In a radio interview,Maceda said UNO membersand officials did not want toinclude Roxas in the list ofcandidates they will support.

“We doubt if he’s a genu-

questionable because he alsoabandoned President GloriaMacapagal-Arroyo

SOCIAL Security Service (SSS) Presidentand Chief Executive Officer (CEO), SecretaryRomulo L. Neri, has just won his suspen-sion case before the Court of Appeals (CA).

According to his lawyer Paul P. Lentejas, the Court of Appeals has denied last March2, 2010 the motion for reconsideration filedby the Ombudsman on the court’s earlier de-cision promulgated last November 13, 2009nullifying the six months suspension metedagainst Neri.

According to Lentejas, the Ombudsman

Neri wins suspension case before CAmay still opt to raise the issue before theSupreme Court but his client will continueto fight the suspension because there wasabsolutely no evidence to support the sixmonths suspension meted against Neri inthe administrative charge filed before theOmbudsman.

This i s the second case won byLentejas. Last week, he also won beforethe DOJ the case of his client Lope Jimenezin the controversial Ruby-Rose Barramedamurder.

Chris Evans wins the role of ‘Captain America’AFTER nearly

two years of specu-lation, The Holly-wood Reporter brokethe news on Mon-day that ChrisEvans will be play-ing Marvel Comics’iconic hero CaptainAmerica in the big-screen adaptation.

The movie, titled“The First Avenger:Captain America,”was announced in

2008 after MarvelStudio’s first produc-tion, “Iron Man,” be-came a box-office hit.The names of manyactors — from estab-lished stars to mostlyunknowns — havebeen rumored to be upfor the role for months.Action movie veter-ans Channing Tatum(“G.I. Joe: The Riseof Cobra”) and GarrettHedlund (the upcom-ing “Tron Legacy”)

were reportedly con-sidered, as were TVregulars ChaceCrawford (“GossipGirl”) and Scott Por-ter (“Friday NightLights”). Even wild-cards like “The Office”funnyman JohnKrasinski tested forthe part.

Chris Evans was alate addition to theroster of potential

leads, but he had al-ready establishedhimself as a comic-book hero by playingthe Human Torch inthe two “FantasticFour” movies. Thisgoes against directorJoe Johnston’sstated intention to usean unknown actor forthe role. But Evans isan American, whichwas Johnston’s otherrequirement (and leftout foreigners l ikeAustralian “Avatar”star Sam

While fans of thecomics have ex-pressed their doubts atsome of the candidatesfor the role, responseto Evans has been uni-formly positive. Hisperformance asJohnny Storm in “Fan-tastic Four” and “Riseof the Silver Surfer”were widely consideredto be the best parts ofthose movies. It’sbeen said that Evanswill sign a nine-picturecontract that could seehim appear as CaptainAmerica in multiplefilms, both on his ownand with the Avengers.

Production on “TheFirst Avenger” will be-

Hugo Weav-ing (“The Matrix”) isin talks to play Cap-tain America’s nem-esis, the Red Skull. It is the third moviein Marvel Studio’spipeline, following“Iron Man 2,” whichis coming to theaterson May 7th of thisyear, and “Thor,” cur-rently filming for aMay 2011 release.“Captain America” isscheduled to openon July 22, 2011.

DUE to the popularity ofits MyWallet cash card prod-uct, Rizal Commercial Bank-ing Corporation (RCBC) dis-closed that it has amassedclose to a millioncardholders to-date. RCBCExecutive Vice President andRetail Banking head IsmaelSandig revealed that thebank is handling an averageof 15,000 new applicationsper week for both its ATMcards and MyWallet cards.

“Our MyWallet cardscontribute about 90 percentof our total number of ap-plicants. The benefits we’reputting into our cash cardsare really enticing morepeople to apply,” he said.

The bank is confident ofmeeting its target of 5 mil-lion cardholders within thenext 5 years. “We are con-vinced that the market ishuge and that there is a veryrich potential still for debitcards,” Sandig continued.

The MyWallet card pro-vides those without bank de-

posit accounts a safe and se-cure means of carryingone’s cash.

With no maintaining bal-ance necessary, users canstore any amount up to ashigh as P100,000 per month– to get them through theirday. As an alternative to theregular ATM card, theMyWallet card letscardholders withdrawmoney from ATMs, shopand pay via Bancnet point-of-sale systems, inquireabout their account balance, and pay bills.

On top of these, users arediscovering the conve-nience of transmitting cashto anywhere in the country. The MyWallet cardholdercan send any amount of upto P100,000 either to an-other cardholder, to anRCBC account, or to the ac-count of another bank.

Regardless of the amountbeing sent, RCBC charges afixed service fee of P20 ifdone over the counter at any

RCBC branch. “This makesthe MyWallet card’s nation-wide remittance servicemore affordable than othermoney transfer services.

This is just one of thehighlight benefits of havingour card,” said Sandig.RCBC also has a variantcalled the MyWallet MRTcard, which is the first of itskind in the local bankingindustry.

It allows users to pay fortheir MRT fares whenpassed over a sensor lo-cated directly at the termi-nal entrances, convenientlysparing them from lining upto the payment booths. Thebank is looking to incorpo-rate more features and ben-efits to make its MyWalletcard the preferred cash cardbrand among consumers. In-quiries and applicationscan be directed to tel. no.877-7222 or via email [email protected] by visiting any RCBCbranch.

ingly popular dive destination, which hasbeen described in the World Heritage Listas having “rare and superlative phenom-ena as well as formations, features andareas of exceptional beauty.”

He added that aside from these world-renowned destinations, Palawan boastsof other exotic treasures like the enchant-ing islands and awe-inspiring seascapesof El Nido, with its towering black marbleand limestone cliffs, which seem to risemajestically from placid crystal blue wa-ters. He further pointed out that Palawanis also rich in culture and history, citingthe Tabon Caves, the oldest known habi-tation site in Southeast Asia and reputed“Cradle of Philippine civilization”, whichhave yielded rare fossils and artifacts datingto as far back as 890-710 B.C..

Lapid is enthusiastic that the eventwill promote mountain biking as an envi-ronment friendly and truly rewarding wayof enjoying nature’s many wonders, high-lighting the fact that it rewards the bikerwith a stronger and healthier body. Thus,in an innovation on our current tourismpromotion efforts, this project will promoteeco-tourism the healthy way. The funride will snake along a pre-determinedroute in Puerto Princesa City and even-tually bring the participants to the City’sIrawan Watershed for a tree-planting pro-gram where participants will pledge theirco-stewardship in the protection and pres-ervation of Palawan’s unique ecology.

Our Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadWhen I have asked suffering people, “Who helped

you?” not one person has mentioned a PhD from aprestigious seminary or a famous philosopher. All ofus have the same capacity to help those who hurt.

No one can package or bottle the “appropriate”response to suffering. If you go to the sufferers them-selves, some will recall a friend who cheerily helpeddistract them from their illness. Others think such anapproach insulting. Some want honest, straightfor-ward talk; others find such discussion unbearablydepressing.

There is no magic cure for a person in pain. Mainly, such a person needs love, for love instinctively detectswhat is needed. Jean Vanier, who founded the L’Archemovement for the developmentally disabled, says:“Wounded people who have been broken by sufferingand sickness ask for only one thing: a heart that lovesand commits itself to them, a heart full of hope forthem.”

Such a love may be painful for us. But real love, the apostle Paul reminds us, “Bears all things, believesall things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Cor.13:7).

As is so often His pattern, God uses very ordinarypeople to bring about His healing. Those who sufferdon’t need our knowledge and wisdom, they need ourlove. — Philip Yancey

* * *Sabi ni Junel nung makausap namin siya, he will

just continue to inspire his team na maglaro ng bestnila.

Hindi siya umaasa na overnight ay maging kampeonagad ang Barako.

But he believes it can be done. Maaaring hindi pangayon pero darating din yun.

ARMED with sick moves using their boards, Aloha Boardsportschampion skaters from all over the world are set to invade Manila.

Among these star skaters is 14-year-old Louie Lopez, a Califor-nia-based boarder who is making a name for himself early in hiscareer. He first started skateboarding at the tender age of 6—afterbeing inspired from watching the world-famous pro-skater TonyHawk skate a vertical ramp at the X-Games.

Lopez will skate along with his idol David Gonzales, the Columbianskater who joined the Flip Skate team in 2008. Luan de Oliveria,Volcom and Tampa Am competitions’ multi-awarded champ, alsojoins the line up with the European pro-skater Willow, who haslikewise been featured in numerous skating videos.

The skater god Mark Appleyard will also wow the Philippinecrowd as he shows his tough moves for the tour. Having been a two-time Transworld Skateboarding Skater of the Year and garneringmore awards under his belt, Appleyard will show Manila his favor-ite trick which is the backside smith grind, along with his otherfamous moves.
