What a beautiful character theamiable ami doout lady and gentle-man friends of the 1. (i. aro givingto tho party on wh'ch that body re-

lies for support! If the Presidentand Secretary of State require any-thing to conlinn tho justice and wis-

dom of their policy, they will ilnd agood deal of reason in tho inter-views with our absent friends pub-lished uj tho American papcis.

.jusueo ditiiu was mui foullli tuolu an soomod.partisan after- - dricks reported his loss tonoon." liis outbursts of passion, over tho defeat of tho bay-onet treaty aud tho downfall of thoThurston 'ministry, wore open andscandalous. Wliou Mr. Judd revertswith pride to tho independence oftho Supremo Court, does ho forgot

Thurston blazed out at thoCourt in private (on the deadlockwith Kalakaua about Col. Ashford),"If it's blood you want, you'll gotyour bellyful of itl" Tho Courtwas not iuUepeudent enough then tostand by its convictions and kick itsinsuher down stairs.

J. L. Stevens, in a lying defense ofthe culmination of his three years'iutiiguo against the Hawaiian Gov-

ernment, sas: "From Saturdayafternoon, January 11, to January16, there was no Government in Ho-

nolulu except in tho united aud self- -

possessed attitude of citizens," etc.If Mr. StevouV Chinese cook hadpacked a tiu of opium publiclythrough the streets on tho eveningof January 11, Mr. Stevens wouldhave known whether there was aGovernment hole before ho got hisSunday dinner. There was a Gov-

ernment heio which Miooessfullywithstood the attempt to changethe constitution unlawfully, andwhich was well prepared as onformer occasions to put down anyuprising that did not have tho back-

ing of foieigu troops. Tho Cabinethns constitutional standing aswell as the Queen, which standingMr. Stevens biutally ignored. Mr.Stevens is dheotl contra 'icted bythe.testimouy of Mr. Damon nowfiled in the State Department.

A REFUGE OF LIES.Thorp has mu'er been vorso

campaign of l.ving in all Americanpolitics than that iut-ti- t utetl to dis-

credit President Cleveland's Hawai-ian policy. Ono statement telegraphcd broadcast to tho United Statuspress is that Mr. Wundenburg was

member of the Legislatiue anduupporter of the lottery bill! Aliother, that Mr Corn well was olio oftho first men to appeal to Mi. Thurs-ton foi the establishment of thoProvisiuual Govoiiiniout! The auth-o- i

is unknown. But what of thofollowing credited to ''one of thegentlemen" of the Hawaiian Lega-

tion ut Washington, appearing inconnection with lemarki obtainedfiom Me-.r- s. Alexander anil Hast-ings? Which of them said this is

not mentioned, but is a shockingmisstatement coming from either:"The speaker said ho had boon pres-

ent ut tho hovoral meetings whichtook place iu Honolulu on tho daytho change occurred, and was in

the Government House when theproyisioual authorities wore install-ed, and ho asserted that tho localmilitia, acting for the provisionalgovernment, was iu charge of thogrounds several houis before thomurines from tho Bostou appeared."This was said a week before Mr,Damon's testimony to CommissionerBlount was published, giving theBimple truth that no military forcewas on the ground, and that therevolutionists wore neivous at thouncertainty of active support fromthe Boston troops close by.

Saturday, Nov. 25, ISO'S.

If Honolulu was a placeswhere long twilights were common all the year round thenecessity foi lamps, good lamps, would not be as great as it is.But jumping from sunset todark as wedo here, five or sixmonths in the year, people re-

quire lamps "early and often."And when you are getting onewhy not buy something that is

ornamental as well as service-able. In the selection of ourlamps we have been careful toget only those you can livewith harmoniously, somethingthat will not make the eyeweary or the heart sad. Inthe last decade rapid strideshave been made toward per- -

tection in lamps; ornamenta-tion has reached a stage where"ginger bread" has made roomfor elegance, and this stage isreached as well in iron as brass.ind silver. One hancuiet lnmiiin wrought iron is particularly J Willuuticeuuie lur inc iiciiucaa wi

design and exquisite workman-ship. Each curve in the tails ofthe dragons which hold the hand-some Rookwood fount looksas natural as if the dragons hadposed as models for the work-

man. We know of a hall dozenlibraries where this lamp wouldharmonize with the surround-ings. In brassahighstandlamp, rather massive in appearancebut light in the filagree con-

struction, like Mexican Jewelry. This lamp in its effect differsfrom the wrought iron men-tioned above only as a blacksilk dress would difler lromone of lighter shade. One issubdued richness while theother carries with it a lightness of character not found insombre black. We have twen-

ty different varieties of theselamps, sufficient to suit thetastes of every one. The people in Honokaa arecrying tor mud wntle tne residents of Honolulu with theirusual generous spirit are willing tq ship all that is in thestreets from Palama to Punahou and from the wharf to thePali. More than that, they arewilling to sacrifice ail thatpasses through the watermains and which the Honolulupeople are cooking and eatingor drinking every day. Butthere is no apparent reasonfor anyone taking a peck ofdirt into the stomach at a singlemeal or even in a day. TheImproved Stone Filter is themeans adopted in the UnitedStates, . and 'pretty generallyhere, as a preventative for suchunwholesome things beingtaken into the stomach. Ifthese filters were used in cer-tain countries Hawaii wouldhave no use for a quarantinestation. Physicians recommendour filter for its cleanliness andgetatableness. There is not apart of it that cannot be cleanedin an instant. Our last invoicetakes in all sizes from the "weebitty" to the one large erioughfor a hotel.

The demand upon our stockof small iron stoves has beenso great of late that our small-est size was sold out before anew lot arrived. Last weektwo sailing vessels from theCoast brought us a lot of newones and we can supply thepeople who want a really goodsmall stove at a low price. Olall the iron stoves made nonewill stand the daily wear andtear like the "Pansy." Oursales of this particular stovehave been enormous duringthe past four years and we

I have never yet had a complaintfrom people using them.

I Every mail from the other' Islands brings us inquiries andorders for locked fence. The

. economy and strength of the' fence is what wins the friend- -

ship of the plantation manager.j If you do not know what alocked fence is we will be pleasedto answer any correspondencein regard to it.

THE OIUTION.

Past Mflstor J. A. Hass'inortho following oration:

Most Wonsiupvt'ii Grand Mahit.h, La-di-

and Gentlemen, Biir.riutHS':

There nro times in tho lives of institu-tions, as well as of individuals, whenhaving attained tin fruition of a greatdesire, the pleasure of possession bringsto tno heart n Joy Unit seems uoyonumeasure. In tho life of Hawaiian Lodgoof Froo and Accepted Masons, this is anoccasion which may well be marked asu red letter day. Called into being as aMasonic body tinder dispensation fromthe Grand Lodgo of California foily-on- e

years ago on tho 12th day or Januarylast, in a city whoso foreign-bor- n inhabi-tants wore no few in number that youcould call most of its families by name-and by number, and eharteii'd May theoth of tho same year, with an originalnieinborship of eloon. it Inn grown andsteadily prosporcd In the city of its birth, and now ranks as a solid institution in aprosperous city of 'A000 inhabitants andhaving y a membership of USD, '

whilst a sister lodge, working undorthoGrand Orient of Franco, is also in aprosperous condition with a membershipof ly. This would seem a lining momentfor a brief gluueo at tho history of thopast, even at the risk of being tedious, and my plea will be that our Order, whoso legends aie mostly unwritten, should avail itself of occasional oppor--,luuities to preserve tho record of suchlandmarks as nre not strictly required to

' be stored iu memory. As an isolatedoffspring of the Grand Lodgo of Cidi-- ifornia, Hawaiian Lodgo hiiB sinco its

i baptism, aud dining all its earlier years, bad numerous battles with adversity. But tho materials of ils foundation "wero

'

good men and true." Faithful to thoilrst principles of Freemasonry andcheerfully bearing tho "heat aud burthenof tho day,'1 they faltered not in theirdetermination to establish and maintainthis outpost of their Order and llrmly '

weld the link between the Occident audthe Orient, which would complete theMasonic Circle of thu Globe. In viewoftho peculiar situation in the days priorto steam communication, our lodge wasfor all purposes of intercom so fully twicethe distance from tho parent GiandLodge that it is in these days of fieqvenland rapid transit. Honolulu was thentho rendezvous of the great whaling fleetfrom tho eastern coast of the UnitedSlates, with a fair sprinkling of German,English, and an occasional Frenchwhaler. As a natural consequence therewere visiting brethren of many national-ities, and though the lodge welcomedmany traveling Masons, little or no ad-

dition was made to its membership. But the calls for Mahonio relief wero fro-- iqueut und at times embarrassing.Doubtless some of the older brethren

may remember instances where the"loaf was divided" in those days nndthe giver was left nearly, if not quite, aspoor as tho receiver. But, thunks to theellbrts aud detennination of its earliormembers, the lodge lid,od over theshoals, the link icinained unbroken andwas slowly but hiirely strengthened. Many of these biethren of the early daysremained iu our cmimiunity and mem-bership, faithful to the tenets of thebrotherhood they loved so well, until, their labor well and truly done, theywero called to their rest and reward inthe Higher Lodge, and fraternal handslaid them all reverently beneath tho sodof tho valley. Their chairs are vacantbut the names of Wyllie, Andrews, Cart-wrigh- t,

Poor. Thurston. Wbnd, Dur-ham Barlow, will remain inthe memory of Hawaiian Lodgo us longas its namo and temple shall ondure. From tho earlier llflies until September,187U, tho lodgo held its meetings in thethird story jf what is known as thoMukoe Block, at the corner of QueenKuahumunu streets. To enter the lodgeono had to climb the narrow stairwayfrom Queen street, between Grinbaum'ssloro and Hoffman's ding storo at thecorner. Arrived at the thiid floor, itwas necessary to pass through a largestore room piled with bales and cases ofdry goods, coils of rope, plows, kegs ofnails, and ovory conceivable description '

of merchandise. Prior to the days ofkerosene, the lodge ami its approacheswero illuminated (if that term may boused) by whak oil lanterns and candles, consequently it required careful naviga-tion at timer, when the storage had beenshifted, to ariivo safely within tho pre-cincts of the lodge. From the early daysa building fund laid been slowly accu-mulating, ami the brethren looked hopo-full- y

forwaid lo tho erection of n build-ing of their own. But the fund, thoughaided from time to timo b contributionsfrom abroad, grew so slowly that theyhad full etperienco of that old adage,"Hope deferred inakcth tho heart sick."As the lodge increased in membership, the heat and confinement became alnio.itjnsupportahlc, and to spend an eveningin tho lodge-ioo- had become an ordealthat some of tho brothren did not dareto face; and if was finally determined tobuy a lot and build, even at the risk ofshouldering a heavy dobt, . Asa conse-quence, the corner stono of our hall, attlie corner of Fort nnd Queen streets, was laid on January 1, 1K7U, just twenty-Bove- n

yeaiH after our organization, andthe hall on the second floor was dedi-cated to Masonic purposes on tho iltlthof September of that year. In thorudays the location was considered cen-tral; but. as tho city grow and rip read tothe east, west aud north, the bielhrenliving moy in the huirun lo

lodge wiih not as desirable as could bewished. 'I hen again thorn wero otherdrawbackh, Thoro was but Utile iu theouter appeal unco of thu building lo iden-tify it as a Masonic Temple; and it

to lift HWiuuped iuwaver, of commerce that surged

around if With the rapid hicicitotralllu iu that growing commercial centre,

I its lucidity on tho leeward corner of two

busy streets, made Its upper hall ft targetfor clouds of dust swept upon it by thotrndo winds, and slowly, but Burely, theconviction forced Itself upon tho brethrenthat a change should be mudo for thohotter. And when a fair offer was madefor our building, tho time seemed to ar-

rive when wo should wisely make thatchange, and, prolltlng by past experi-ence, it was determined to weigh wellall tho advantages to bo gullied by earo-f- ul

selection of locality, stylo of architec-ture and internal adaptability. Commit-tees woro appoiiitcd to attend to thesovarious matters in detail. Their reportsweio considered with due deliberation, and operative as woll as speculativemasonry becmno a matter of appropriatelodge woilc. Its results aro before us.To the masonic eye, our temple standsas a typical structure, illustialing bothoperative and speculative masonry. Thorough ashlar, as taken from its Hawai-ian quarry, has been carefully selected;it has been dressed and tried by thosquare, und with cunning hand, byaid of lovel and plumb, each blockhas been lilted to its plneo; andagreeably to Masonic usage, "tho in-

ternal qualifications are such as recom-mend themselves to Freemasonry," andwo find ourselves established in a homoof combined "strength und beauty" andwhich we trust may endure for ages astho Temple of our Ordor in theso islands. But fond memory will linger round thohall we havo jusl deserted. For morethan fourteen years it has been the sceneof frequent gatherings in tho interests ofour Older. At the result of thoBO yearsof fraternal work, this lodgo lias causefor great congratulation. In thut hnllmany of our members first behold the"Light of Masonry." All lmvo since beenwell tried and have mostly been foundworthy to bo classed as perfect ashlars.Nor can we soon forgot tho earnest laliorof willing hearts and hands; tho calls torefreshment, where tho lessons ofpernnce, prudence and goodfellowshipwero equally exemplified; tho welcomefaces and kindly greetings of men fromevery nation and ovory clime, but all be-

longing to tho great Mystic Brotherhood. But though tho "grout lights" may nolonger illuminate its "supporting col-

umn:" though the master's hand maynever again "trace designs upon the tres-tle board" within its precincts, and "thesound of tho gavel" may be heuid withinits walls no more, forever! No matter towhat UHes it may be devoted in the com-ing years, it will ever bo held in fond re-

membrance for the sake of the days thatare past. After years of occupancy of

spot known by the endearing nameof "homo." has it ever occurred, that.having changed your abiding place, youfind yourself, in an absent-minde- d man-ner, wandering back along the old path-way, through haunts, recalling old faces -- and then awakeningsuddenly to tho realization that these are

Let us bury the past. And now in theuuiveisal name of Freemasonry we cor-dially greet tho friends who have hon-ored us by their presence upon this im-pressive and joyous occasion. We areproud to welcome you to our beautifulTemple. While the grand bodies of ourOrder, in older and greater countries, have, with tho advancement of tho com-munity in which they have existed, found it necessary or convenient to buildanew a tomplo for their united lodges, yet it is not often tho privilege of anindividual lodgo to build for a secondtimo a temple of its own. Wo uro proudthat tliiu, with our Mid-Ocea- n Lodge ofHawaii, is tho accomplished fact whichwo have this night assembled to celebrate. And more than all wo aro proud of oursuccess in oreeting so beautiful and dura- -
