B. Ecology and Natural Resources

According t o Peinado, Eacienda Toralapa '%as probably the biggest and

n o s t import~nt fee= of tke ~nt?re ? m t < r c e ic t e r n s of x z h c r of r 'xa l f~e-

l i e s , mea , ar?d volune of potato production," making it a log ica l choice

f o r study. The farm i t s e l f was divided i n t o f ive parts, each administered

separately; t h e l ave r sect ion, call-:d Torolapa, containing the pa t r6n f s

bouse and most of t h e irrige,ted land of the hacienda, was chosen fo r stud;r.

The other sect ions, Uc?lchi, C a ~ i c o t e , Boqucron, ariC Sancaya~ i , &re not t r ea t ed

i n t h i s ,tudy because nc bese da te are avai lable f o r them. The hacienda

was establ ished i n 1870 and increased i c s i z e following the \.Jar of t he Pa-

c i f i c (1879) a t t h e expense of t h e neighboring Indian c o m ~ n i t y . ~ Its fi-

na l owner i n t he pre-refom period expanded it by t h e adquisi t ion or' the

neighborin( hacienda. By t h i s time, t h e Indian co~prunity ha9 been completely

incorporated i n t o the hacienda.

Toralnpa has a mean a l t i t u d e of 9,700 meters, vhich i~ high enough

t o l i m i t the growth of ~ a t u r e l vegetetlon t o short grass an3 t o l a ( a scrub

bush); a few e c c a m t u s t r ee s m e a l so found, but wcod i s generally scarce

a t t h i s a l t i t ude . Kost r a i n falls betveen December and Mfch , with a yearly

averege prec ip i ta t ion of 450 mn. h u a l average temperature is about 50°

F . , with a greet d e d of var i t i t ior between day night because of t he

a l t i t u d e and g e n e r a lack of c l o ~ d cover. Frosts a r e nost comon i n win-
