Making Sustainability Simple Middle Way House’s Garden Coordinator to Give Presentation on Container Gardening

Bloomington, Ind. --- Andrea Jobe, the summer garden coordinator at Middle Way House Inc., is giving a presentation on container gardening at 10:50 a.m. Saturday at the Bloomington Community Farmer’s Market for the Ready, Set, Grow! event sponsored by the Bloomington Food Policy Council and the Bloomington Commission on Sustainability.

The presentation will explain how container gardening is advantageous to planters with limited gardening space and tight budgets, as well as demonstrate ways to create inexpensive but fun containers from household items.

“We want to show the community that you can be creative with containers you grow your plants in,” Jobe said. “You can essentially grow in anything that holds soil and drains water.”

Jobe is the summer coordinator of the Middle Way House's rooftop garden project. The project grows edible plants available to local vendors, and partners with children from the Rise and the Project School to build relationships between at risk youth and their communities.

The Ready, Set, Grow! event will take place at Showers Civic Plaza and will last from 10 a.m. until noon. Its focus is teaching the community how to home garden and celebrating the benefits of sustainability.

The event will have tables from local organizations and host other presentations on garden layouts, beekeeping, composting, seed starting and transplanting.

High Speed Chase of Fleeing Felon Leads to Reckless Homicide

INDIANAPOLIS—A 12-minute high-speed pursuit of convicted felon Snidely Whiplash

results in the death of Sammy White, 36 of Whiteland.

Charges range from fleeing arrest to possession of stolen property, which included

unopened DVDs and CDs in Whiplash’s vehicle, to reckless homicide with an

automobile. Whiplash, 42 has prior conviction record of breaking and entering, fleeing

from police and possession of an unregistered handgun.

“This strictly is a situation where we thought it was going to escalate and we wanted to

stop this suspect quickly,” Chief of Police, Karl Suskind said.

Chase started at the corner of Walnut and Chestnut street when officer John Smith

attempted to stop Whiplash for failure to yield and not wearing his seatbelt. The police

cited numerous attempts to stop the car, a 1988 Grand Am. However, Whiplash

continued north toward 12th Street where he eventually wrecked into White’s 2002 Ford

F 150 at 12th and Vine.

University Takes Action Against Campus Pornography Dilemma New prohibitions to be added to by-laws; legal charges being pursued

Watsamatta, Nb.—Watsamatta University will pursue preliminary legal action against the film company, Acts Incorporated, after the recent events of pornographic filming took place within campus dormitories. The University is also adding new prohibitions to the school’s by-laws against student participation in pornographic films on campus. New statues are being constructed by the judicial board and will be placed in the school’s by-laws for next term. The University believes this will help prevent the situation from happening in the future. Legal charges being pursued include trespassing on campus residence and taking advantage of students in order to find potential candidates for their movie “Big Ten Schools.” “We are outraged by both the company and the students involved,” stated University President Sam Jackson. “We are taking every step necessary to punish those at fault.” The event took place four weeks ago in Franklin Residence Hall. Three students accepted sexual favors from actors of Acts Incorporated in exchange to letting the company film the sexual acts and to signing a release form stating they were at least 18 years old and allowing the film company to use the footage. The films were produced on the all-male third floor in dorm rooms and a restroom. All student participants were 19 years of age and did agree to the release forms. Since, there were no prohibitions against the student’s actions no punishment has yet to be made.

POSTSCRIPT

Steve Jobs by Mecca Howe OCTOBER 17, 2011

As I went online the other night, I was surprised to see a large black and white photograph of the infamous Steve Jobs. His circular glasses framed his intense eyes that seemed to always have a message to tell. His snowy beard was clean cut and he looked as healthy as the next billionaire Icon. The photograph, I assumed, was taken before the unforgiving cancer struck twelve on the grandfather clock. Then, to the right of the portrait I saw the dates “1955-2001.” Least to say, I was chastised. Anyone who carries the robotic world in his or her pocket is inverted by this shocking expunging of the figure that changed our society forever. The technological hero of our generation has retired from our world, yet he has left us all the benefits of his dreams and creativity. The ingenious artisan of the iPod and the mac computer, which journalists around the nation have learned to rely on, also recently structured the iPad. The iPad did not receive great reviews at first. Disappointed journalists said it was simply a larger iPod. However, people began finding ways to utilize the now glorified creation differently and similarly than first born the iPod. Though Jobs became ill, nobody expected him to leave us so soon. It is hard for one to imagine a society without such an important figure, especially one that is still impacting our lives on a daily basis. Jobs left us with a life made easier. He is the majesty of a fast-paced and convenient world; a world where one can contact anyone anywhere around the globe within seconds and without complication. For that, you have to appreciate him.

Reaching For New Heights

An exciting but challenging way to exercise

September 27, 2011

I’m sure a lot of you young adults are just like me: trying to keep your body looking half

way in shape despite your collegiate actions of health neglect. You know the consistent

poisoning of binge drinking and Pizza X deliveries. I’m also sure, that just like myself, you

get bored with the same ol’ workout routine. I mean come on, you can only go up and

down on the Elliptical or jog around campus so many times.

This week our solution is Indoor Rock Climbing!

Rock climbing is thrilling, fun,

and challenging while also a

great full body work out that

doesn’t call for much time out

of your busy schedule. If you’re

trying to get toned, receive a

blood pumping cardio exercise

and interact with others at the

same time then I’d recommend

trying rock climbing.

When I first started I was skeptical about how good I would be because, well being only

5’3, 110 pounds, I don’t have much upper body strength- at all. Most people believe that

the sport is all about strength, which it is in part. However, I soon found that it also involves

flexibility, balance, technique, and strategy.

Climbing is a dynamic muscle builder. It strengthens muscles in your forearms, shoulders,

upper and lower back, hips, stomach, neck, and legs. Also, since your muscles are flexed

for long periods of time more blood is pumped to them creating a substantial

cardiovascular exercise. Yeah, that’s what I mean by full body work out!

Take It From Me: Fun Ways to Get Fit you’re Weekly Work Out

Page 10: Public Relations and Marketing Portfolio

Public Relations Portfolio | Mecca Howe

9

3 Tips to A Better Cardio Work Out 1) While climbing keep forearms extended

until next move. This calls for you to have to

pull up your body’s weight using your arm or

arms (like a pull-up) which really gets the

blood pumping

2) Belay others while you’re not climbing.

When belaying climbers, you are constantly

pulling a heavy rope- This continues your

work out even while you’re taking a break

resulting in a sustained increased heart rate and cardio exercise

3) Boulder before you high-climb. Bouldering is free climbing without the use of a

harness and rope. The routes are much more strenuous and difficult to

accomplish. Bouldering can be an extremely good warm-up to get your heart

racing and blood flowing. Just remember to always be careful and land on the

mats!

Did you know that climbing is a workout for your mind as well?

It isn’t at all just about ascending up a wall. The routes are divided by levels of difficulty.

Then, the rocks for that route are labeled with a certain color. You can only use those

holds with the color of your route. Therefore, you have to strategize a plan and then

execute in order to succeed.

So my end thought is this. To be successful in

keeping yourself in shape is to find something

you enjoy doing that is not only fun but also

gives you a good workout without you realizing

it. For me, indoor rock climbing does the trick.

In my next issue we will take a look at the benefits from skiing and

snowboarding. You won’t even know you’re getting exercise until the next

day when you wake up sore as hell.

Obama Speech

J349 Public Relations Writing

MY FELLOW AMERICANS, TODAY IS A BEAUTIFUL DAY. A BEAUTIFUL DAY FOR

OPPORTUNITIES.

I, THE PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, AM REFUSING TO SIT AND WAIT FOR

CONGRESS TO STEP UP AND TAKE ACTION IN PROVIDING YOU THOSE OPPORTUNITIES.

THOSE OPPORTUNITIES THAT HAVE THE ABILITY TO PULL OUR NATION OUT OF AN

ECONOMIC RUT. OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL PUT TEACHERS BACK IN OUR SCHOOLS,

OUR VETERANS BACK IN THE WORK FORCE, PUT OUR CONSTRUCTION WORKERS BACK

ON ROADS AND BRIDGES THAT SO DESPERATELY NEED RENOVATION THROUGHOUT

AMERICA, AND THAT WILL CREATE JOBS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE LONG-TERM

UNEMPLOYED.

THE AMERICAN JOBS ACT THAT OUR CONGRESS HAS FOR SOME INEXCUSABLE REASON

VOTED AGAINST, CAN MAKE THOSE THINGS POSSIBLE. IT IS NOT ONLY A SOLUTION TO

THE NEEDS FOR JOBS RIGHT NOW, BUT IT WILL ALSO CONSTRUCT A FOUNDATION FOR

FUTURE ECONOMIC GROWTH THROUGH INVESTMENTS AND INFRASTRUCTURE. IT IS

BASED ON THE AMERICAN IDEAL THAT FROM HONEST HARD WORK ONE CAN ACHIEVE

A SUCCESSFUL LIFE FOR HIMSELF AND HIS FAMILY.

IT IS THE BEST CHANCE WE HAVE TO WIN THIS FINANCIAL WAR.

Page 15: Public Relations and Marketing Portfolio

Public Relations Portfolio | Mecca Howe

14

Obama Speech Continued

AND IF OUR CONGRESS WILL NOT RECOGNIZE THAT THAN I FEEL I AM OBLIGATED TO

ACT ON BEHALF OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. I REFUSE TO WAIT FOR CONGRESS TO DO

THEIR JOB. I AM AND WILL DO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO GET YOU FOLKS BACK TO

WORK. TO GET YOU FOLKS MONEY BACK IN YOUR POCKETS SO THAT YOU CAN FEED

YOUR FAMILIES, PAY OFF YOUR DEBTS, AND LIVE THE FAMOUS AMERICAN WORDS

“LIFE, LIBERTY, AND PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS”

SO WITH THAT, I AM GOING TO KEEP IMPELLING OUR SENATORS AND MEMBERS OF

THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO PASS THIS JOBS BILL.

MY ADMINISTRATION AND I HAVE ALREADY TAKEN NUMEROUS STEPS TO BETTER THIS

ECONOMY. I HAVE ALREADY SIGNED INTO LAW GOVERNMENT SPENDING CUTS OF

TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS. I HAVE EXPEDITED LOANS AND COMPETITIVE GRANTS FOR NEW

CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. I HAVE PUT A STOP TO SUBSIDY

PAYMENTS TO BANKS FOR STUDENT LOAN PROGRAMS. SO THAT NEXT YEAR MILLIONS

OF STUDENTS DON’T HAVE TO PAY MORE THAN TEN PERCENT OF THEIR INCOME

TOWARD STUDENT LOANS. IN ADDITION, I HAVE CONSOLIDATED LOANS SO OUR

GRADUATES WILL ONLY HAVE TO MAKE ONE PAYMENT AT A LOWER INTEREST RATE.

ALSO, I HAVE WORKED TO PUT A HALT ON THE RECENT PRESCRIPTION DRUG CRISIS,

WHICH HAS LEFT SO MANY AMERICANS UNABLE TO OBTAIN OR PAY FOR THE

MEDICINES THEY NEED. I HAVE SIGNED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER THAT

Page 16: Public Relations and Marketing Portfolio

15

Obama Speech Continued

DIRECTS THE FDA TO STEP UP AND REDUCE THESE DRUG SHORTAGES. THE ORDER ALSO

HAS GIVEN MORE POWER TO THE FDA AND THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE TO

INVESTIGATE ANY DRUG ABUSE THAT COULD BE AN UNDERLYING CAUSE OF THIS

SHORTAGE.

SO AGAIN, WITH OR WITHOUT CONGRESS, I ASSURE YOU FOLKS THAT AS YOUR

PRESIDENT I AM, AND WILL CONTINUE, TO TAKE THE NECESSARY STEPS AND MAKE THE

REQUIRED ADJUSTMENTS SO THAT YOU CAN ONCE AGAIN SAY YOU ARE PROUD TO BE

AN AMERICAN.

GOD BLESS YOU AND GOD BLESS AMERICA
