Hamilton North Public School Chalkboard Term 2 Week 8 17th June 2020 Principal Message Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to Week 8! It is hard to believe that Term 2 is nearly coming to an end. Teachers are busy writing reports that will be sent home in Week 10. With a substantial time in Semester One involving ‘learning from home’ we are sure parents could nearly write their own child’s report! Following DoE guidelines Semester One reports will be in a modied format. Returning to Full Time On Campus With our restrictions revised we are now able to allow more activities in school, while strictly adhering to health and safety guidelines. The following updates so far include: Cross Country Years 3-6 (including students who are 8 years old) will be held on Friday 26th June at school. Unfortunately, no parents are allowed with Covid 19 restrictions. Rest assured we will take many pictures and videos. Guitar will recommence early Term 3, with a slightly changed timeslot. Debating and Public Speaking will be operating – stay tuned for more information. Friday Sport will remain in school for Term 3. We are currently making tentative bookings for Term 4 and will revise plans depending upon current restrictions. Incursions are allowed. Excursion are not. Market Garden will recommence. The Horrifying Nightmare In Newcastle by MyahRedman Class 4/5On Thursday 28th of December 1989 Newcastle, the sixth largest cityin Australia, was struck by a monstrous earthquake. The citizens ofNewcastle were petried as they felt the shaking of the earthquakemeasuring 5.6 on the Richter scale, leaving the entire Hunter region indarkness. In early 2007 a United States Academic claimed that coal mining in the region triggered thetremendous earthquake, activity has been present in the area at least since European settlementrst occurred. In this Nightmare there were unfortunately 13 deaths. 9 who perished in the Newcastle WorkersClub, 3 in Beaumont street, Hamilton and 1 died of shock. 50 000 buildings were damaged; about 80percent of those were sadly homes. 300 buildings were demolished including more than 100homes. The Newcastle Workers Club, the Century Theatre and Kings Hall. 30 000 people wereaffected;1000 made homeless. 160 people hospitalised. The epicentre of the earthquake wasBeaumont street Hamilton. There have been songs about the earthquake which include, ‘Earthquakin’, recorded in January1990 by Newcastle Ska Band, The Porkers, and ‘Faultline’, by Australian rock band Silverchair, from1995. Silverchair lead singer, Daniel Johns lost a childhood friend in the earthquake. This earthquake left everyone in a massive amount of shock. This nightmare was unpredictablyhorrifying.

Nightmare in Newcastle by Xanthia Nash Class4/5On Thursday,28th December 1989, Newcastle was hit by a disastrousearthquake, measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale. Newcastle citizens werehorror-struck as buildings collapsed around them, and the earthquakeleft the entire Hunter Valley in darkness.People were busy doing Christmas sale shopping and there was a busstrike going on, so the usually full city-centre was unusually quiet before the earthquake. Police, paramedics and local citizens were doing their best to help casualties and people left in a state ofshock. There were 13 deaths in total, including 9 people who died at Newcastle Workers Club when theroof caved in, 3 people who died on Beaumont St Hamilton, and 1 person died from shock, a total of160 people were hospitalised.Beaumont St Hamilton was the epicentre of the earthquake and most of the damage occurredthere.300 buildings were demolished in the quake, 80%of which were homes. The Newcastleearthquake was said to have been triggered by around 200 years of underground coal mining inAustralia.Lots of people’s homes and workplaces have been absolutely destroyed and cars have been crushedand smashed under the wreckage. A terrible amount of people were hospitalised and lots of peoplewere left in shock after the tremors. It truly is a Nightmare in Newcastle.

Supporting a worried child· Be curious. Ask open questions and actively listen to understand more about your child’s thoughtsand feelings.· Normalise and validate their feelings. This means letting them know that what they are feeling isnormal, other people feel the same way and that there is nothing wrong with their feelings. Forexample, “It must be hard to have so many worries, but it’s normal to worry about getting sick whenyou go back to school.”· Help them limit exposure to media. If they are younger, this might include reducing their exposure tothe news. If they are older, it might be helping them to critically think about media messages they areexposed to or ensuring they are accessing reputable sources.· Create a plan around transitioning. Planning can help alleviate some anxiety, especially fear of theunknown.· Take small steps to re-integrate into society. Some fears can be alleviated with small, controlledexposures. For instance, a great rst step might be a quick trip to the supermarket, or organising foryour child to meet and hangout with one friend in a park.· Problem-solve any concerns together. Talking through strategies together can help your childimprove their problem-solving skills and feel more empowered (you can use the Kids Helpline websiteas a resource if needed for different topics).

If you are concerned that your child is more distressed than expected, is taking longer to recover or isstruggling to cope, it’s important to seek support.https://kidshelpline.com.au/parents/issues/returning-normal-after-covid-19I am at HNPS on Fridays and can be contacted through the front oce if you would like to speak withme.Belinda Robinson – School Counsellor
