REEC EXCURSION 4/5S4/5S enjoyed learning about Aboriginal culture at the Riverina Environmental Education Centre on Tuesday 22nd June. We were interested in how many plants provide us with bush tucker, medicines, tools and even toys. A favourite among our class was tasting the salt bush leaves. We also got to look at and touch the different tools, clap sticks, coolamons and many other things that Mother Nature provides for us. We loved learning about the meaning behind the possum blanket and experienced being able to be wrapped in it.

Dear families,We are planning a school-wide celebration of NAIDOC week, beginning Week 1, Term 3. As part of the recognition of this important week, on the Friday of Week 1 (16th July) we would like to invite any of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family members, caregivers or community members to share some of their knowledge, stories or activities with our school.

The activities could include but are not limited to, art, dance, cooking, games, outdoor activities or storytelling. A teacher would be there to support the running of the activity and supervise students.

If this is something that interests you, please contact Zach Jackson and he will be able to assist you further in any organisation. [email protected]

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN WITH KIDS• Playing with Dad is important. Children who play with their fathers are

more confident and better at coping with challenges, setbacks or problems. Playing with you can help your kids to cope with the challenges we are all facing now.

• Role play is a wonderful tool for social and emotional learning. If your kids can’t go to the shops, they can set up their own. They could create a restaurant, set up a circus, do a talent show, hairdressers or be a vet with toys. Join in as a customer once they are set up. Even older kids will play for hours.

• Think beyond sedentary activities on devices. Children can use technology for other positive purposes that just playing games or spending time on social media.

• Do a scientific mini exploration outside. Children can use phones to take photographs of the world from the perspective of an ant or a butterfly and create a picture or PowerPoint journal of day in the life of their mini creature.

• Explore the world online together from your home. Build on your children’s knowledge of the world around them. Learn about and locate different countries, name continents, countries, cities, rivers, mountains etc. Have family quizzes to test your knowledge.

• Get creative to get the housework done. Ask your kids to design a makeover of their bedroom by creating homemade pictures, rearranging displays and tidying and cleaning. Get them to draw up plans of their ideas first.

• Don’t be afraid of letting them get bored occasionally. Children don’t have many opportunities to let their imaginations flow and get creative in this era of over-stimulation. The ability to deal with boredom is an unmistakable sign of good mental health.

Coach 2 Cope: Families and Carers

Suppor5ng the mental health and wellbeing of young people

Are you concerned about the impact mental health has on your children? Would you like to learn simple ways to respond to young people during 5mes of distress?

EquiEnergy Youth is a charity dedicated to reducing psychological distress, self-harm and the risk of suicide in young people. Our programs aim to connect young people with safe & effective adults with the capacity to ef-fectively respond to them during times of distress and improve mental health outcomes.

As a result of a PhD research project and thousands of hours of clinical experience, Dr Stephen Spencer has de-veloped a simple method to guide adults on how and when to respond to young people in distress to achieve a positive outcome. Steve will coach you on the following;

*A 5 step evidence-based psychological first aid framework (TAR3) for you to follow when responding ‘in the moment’ to episodes of distress and behavioural challenges. For example, TAR3 is the equivalent of the DR ABC process for responding to psychical health first aid.

*Guidance on simple ways you can help young people build coping, resilience and positive help seeking be-haviour and the vital role you play in promoting this.

*Context on why child & adolescent mental health occurs and what you can do to improve mental health out-comes for the young people you support.

*Coaching in the use of scripts and engagements strategies to adopt when responding to distress using the TAR3 psychological first aid framework.
