CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O Lord God Almighty, enthroned on high, filling the earth with Your glory: holy is Your name. With repentant hearts, we confess to You our weakness and unbelief. We have lived by our own strength, and not by the power of the resurrection. We have lived by the light of our own understanding and not by the light of Christ. We have lived for this world, and have doubted our home in heaven. We have heard the good news of Jesus, but have failed to share it with others. We have lived as if we were ashamed to belong to Your Son. In Your mercy, O Lord, forgive us and take away our guilt. Restore us for the sake of Your Son and bring us to the joy of heaven, in Jesus Christ our Lord.

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Preparation for WorshipAs you enter the Sanctuary, please prepare your heart for worship

and silence your mobile devices.

All the elements of our worship services are designed to strengthen our faith in our promise-keeping God . This is particularly true of the sacraments . One way that we exercise faith in our Lord and His promises is by bringing our children for baptism . Why do we baptize our children?God’s covenant promise. We baptize our children because God promises to be their God throughout the Scriptures . The Apostle Peter says at Pentecost that the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit are for you and your children” (Acts 2:39) .God’s prescribed pattern. God established a pattern of giving the sign of entrance into the covenant to children of believers in the Old Testament (Genesis 17:7) and this pattern is not set aside in the New Testament . Thus, the silence of the New Testament is more an argument for the practice than against it .God’s new sign. In the New Testament, baptism replaces circumcision as the sign of the covenant (Colossians 2:11) . Both signs remind us that God’s promise continues to future generations and necessitates the shedding of blood for salvation .A vivid picture. Baptism points to what Christ’s shed blood accomplishes: the washing away of sin’s guilt and the Spirit being poured out upon us . We celebrate this reality when we baptize an adult who professes faith . We anticipate this reality when we baptize a child of believing parents .

Welcome, Guests!

If you are visiting with us today, we welcome you to Second Presbyterian . Please sign our Friendship Pad, which will be passed during the Greetings time of the service . Our Congregational Communities (CCs), also known as Sunday School classes, offer a wide variety of options for various age groups and stages of life . Visiting a CC (Sundays at 9:45 a .m .) is the best way to get to know others and become involved . Visit 2pc .org/cc for a list of classes . Children in Worship: We consider it a privilege for children to worship with us . If your children become restless and vocal, feel free to visit the “soundproof” Cry Room at the back of the Sanctuary . Worship bags including material specifically designed for children are available at the Nursery desk .Weekly Focus on Missions

World Missions: Since 2004, Families Matter has worked to increase the number of healthy, loving, and caring families in our city . Our FM partners ask that we join them in prayer for students who are suffering and in need of many items that will help them to advance in school . Pray also for the students’ teachers to be understanding and supportive . Finally, pray for the FM staff as they work to help families collect necessities to keep their children fed and in warm clothes this winter .Mission Memphis: Tezar and Tatiana serve in Jakarta, Indonesia, where Tezar is pastor of Covenant City Church . In just two years Covenant City has grown from 25 members to 150 members and an average attendance of 220 each Sunday . Not only has CCC grown numerically, the church is offereing condensed version, seminary-like courses to help members grow in their faith . One outreach of CCC is its partnership with a local orphanage, Karena Karish (Because of Mercy) . Church members spend time each month with the children, and the church offers college scholarships to Karena Karish teens . Pray that the Lord will continue to use CCC as a powerful Gospel witness in Jakarta . Pray also for the Holy Spirit to fill Tezar and Tatiana as they minister to those in their care .
