The FIVB announced a ground-breaking sponsorship deal with Japanese car manufacturer Honda, who will become the first ever FIVB official partner for professional and elite volleyball and beach volleyball for the next four years.

This agreement is the first important partnership reached under the new leadership of Dr. Ary S. Graa F. Honda, as the official partner, will sponsor major world class events such as the Womens Volleyball World Championship Italy 2014, the World League, the World Grand Prix, the Club World Championships and the Beach Volleyball World Championships.

    This partnership is concluded under

the FIVB Global Partnership Strategy, part of a wider FIVB Partnership Programme that aims to integrate a select few brands with exclusive rights across both volleyball and beach volleyball FIVB events.

FIVB President Dr. Graa commented on the agreement: For the first time ever, the FIVB

has signed a partnership with an international brand across both disciplines. This step represents a major milestone for the FIVB and it is part of the new era for the Federation following the success of our sport at London 2012.

  • After his election to head of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) in September 2012, President Dr. Ary S. Graa F promised to work towards modernising and streamlining the way in which the sport and organisation is run. FIVB had the opportunity to sit down with the President to take stock of the current situation and to discuss the Brazilians future plans.

FIVB: You have spoken about restructuring the FIVB to ensure that the organisation continues to meet the demands of the sport, its athletes and fans. What measures have you put in place in your short time at the helm?

President Graa: My first directive was to conduct an audit of our current working practices and organisational structure. This has assisted us greatly in building on our management model to ensure that our projects are realised in the most efficient manner possible. We have also strengthened our financial and economic strategies, and continue to ensure that our internal workings are communicated in as transparent a manner as possible to all our continental and national federations. We are also looking closely at the Japanese model of marketing the sport in its region.

A report following the 100 Day Action Plan implemented by FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graa F has strongly recommended that the foundations laid by the Action Plan be followed by a 500 or even a 1,000 Day Implementation Plan. The report, by Professor Istvan Kasznar of the Fundao Getulio Vargas university in Brazil, explains that the Action Plan was built on the foundation, values and main objectives of the FIVBs Strategic Plan. Its goal was to demonstrate short-term progress and create a special momentum for

the team-building, integration and transformation of volleyball across the global volleyball community.

According to the report, the purpose of a 500 or 1,000 Day Implementation Plan would be to negotiate, align, confirm, reinforce, communicate and synchronize all on-going, planned and approved activities, especially those which are essential long-term plans and were not included in the initial 100 Day Plan.

  • FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graa F has set out a new investment strategy for the sports governing body in order to streamline expenditure and maximize revenue. President Graa served as a director for several major Brazilian banks, including the Banco Mercantil de So Paulo where he headed up 15,000 employees. He has appointed Mr Neil Brito, bank consultant, as the new investment strategy consultant for the FIVB and will work together with him to define the details of a new strategy to minimise loss and

maximise the growth of the FIVBs financial resources.

Funds under the FIVB management were previously overseen by the French bank Socit Gnrale, and JP Morgan. Under the new arrangements, Socit Gnrales responsibilities will be shared with the Swiss banks Pictet, Lombard Odier & Cie and UBP (Union Bancaire Prive). JP Morgan will continue to look after the same managed funds as before.

  • The FIVB Executive Committee applauded the initiative of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Council with its new found approach in 2013 as its end of year meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil came to a close. Following a very successful year in 2012, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Council, led by Council president and FIVB Board of Administration member Vicente Araujo, sought a new vision for 2013 and beyond in order to capitalise on the tremendous momentum of the past 12 to 24 months and create new opportunities for players. A reduction in the level of approval criteria for FIVB Open events has created that break through with a potential record-breaking FIVB beach

volleyball calendar in 2013.Countries of the likes of Peru, Qatar

and Uganda are expected to host FIVB Open events for the first time in 2013 while USA could potentially be welcomed back for the first time since 2004 as part of a calendar

which is likely to cover nine months of the year (March to December) and all five confederations. The confirmation of the 2013 calendar was released in February.

International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) President Dr. Ary S. Graa F proved that he is not just a manager but someone with a sound knowledge of volleyball, as he took to the court to play the Vlei Master, a senior competition held in Saquarema, Brazil for athletes

above the age of 35. In its ninth edition, the event organised by the Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV) brings together 145 teams and more than 1,200 players for an eight-day competition at the CBVs Volleyball Development Center. Players from all over the country and other countries

in the region travel from afar to participate in the tournament. The competition was created by Dr. Graa during his term as the head of the Brazilian federation.

A huge event like this one proves that volleyball is a sport that can be practised by people of different ages, from children to old people. And it also shows how important volleyball can be to ones health, Dr. Graa said.

The FIVB President visited the Vlei Master with a clear desire to play with friends.

Playing volleyball is not new for Dr. Graa as he had a victorious career on the court in the 1960s, winning important titles and playing for the Brazilian national team.

It is with an enormous sense of pride that I address you for the first time in these pages as President of the FIVB. We have come a long way since we began, and it is my avowed intention to ensure that volleyball and beach volleyball not only stay in touch with the ever-changing world in which we live today, but offer a beacon of hope and joy to players and spectators everywhere.

Under our leadership the FIVB will become even more efficient, more dynamic, and more modern in its outlook. For me it is a great honour and at the same time a great opportunity to grow the sport of volleyball around the world, taking it into schools and boosting its profile, and I am proud to be able to lead it into this new era.
