Just think, in about 8 weeks we will once

again be opening our museum doors to the

public. That is a wonderful thing!

Winter is always a busy time of the year for us. This is when we tidy up

our museum displays. It’s also the time when we renew our commitment

for the upcoming year and plan for the future. Yes indeed, winter is a

very active period at the Hall.

Many of you have been members of the Hall for a very long time. While

others, have just come on board in the last year or two. However long it

has been, we are very grateful for your support. Thank you.

Since 2004, our operating expenses have risen about 25%. Since that

time, we have held the line on our basic membership to $30.

Unfortunately, due to the rampant escalating costs of operating our core

programs, we have no other alternative but to raise our 4 membership

platforms $5 apiece. In other words, our basic membership level (Silver)

will become $35 with the other platforms increasing $5 apiece as well.

We certainly hope you understand our predicament. We look forward to

many more years of your support. Again, thank you.

On a personal level I am very excited about a new event the Hall is going

to sponsor this spring. As you know, the core mission of the Fresh Water

Fishing Hall of Fame is to promote fresh water sportfishing. On May 1,

2010, in conjunction with Holiday Station Stores, we are sponsoring the

“2010 Hayward Crappie Contest.” This contest will focus on family and

youth sportfishing. This will be a great vehicle to get our message out. A

splendid time is guaranteed for all. For further details please refer to

page 3. See you all on May 1st!

Best regards,

Emmett A. Brown, Jr.

B.A.S.S.(Bass Anglers Sportsman Society)

B.A.S.S., born and raised in Montgom -ery, Alabama in 1968 was founded byRay Scott with simple goals in mind: tocreate a credible and honorabletournament trail, to improve ourenvironment by uniting and amplifyingthe voices of anglers and to secure afuture for our youth. In the past fourdecades B.A.S.S. has met all thesegoals and more.

It would take volumes to list theaccomplishments of B.A.S.S. over theyears, but two may be mostsignificant. In 1972, B.A.S.S. initiated a“Don’t Kill Your Catch” program thatevolved into the modern “catch-and-release” ethic now practiced by nearlyall bass anglers. In 1984, B.A.S.S.lobbied Congress in support of theWallop-Breaux amendment, whichgenerates more than $200 millionannually for state fisheries.

Since 1968, B.A.S.S. has been active inlocal, state and national conservationissues. Many of their original goalswere directed toward protection of ournatural resources. All of these goalswere established prior to the timewhen the Clean Water and the Clean

2010 Enshrinees and Inductees Are Announced

Air and Endangered Species acts werepassed by Congress. B.A.S.S. was alsoon the record before most of America’sfisheries management scientists hadeven acknowledged that black basscould be stockpiled by practicing catch-and-release strategies.

Realizing that a collection of chapterscould accomplish more and have astrong voice on issues that affect thefuture and preservation of bass fishing,B.A.S.S. decided to unite them. In 1972,B.A.S.S. installed 19 state federationsand so began the B.A.S.S. FederationNorth program. There are currentlyFederation Nation clubs in 46 U.S.states plus organizations in Canada,Mexico, Italy, Japan, South Africa andZimbabwe.

of them are saying about this veryprestigious honor:

Legendary Angler Joe Bucher"Honestly, of all thethings that havehappened to me(good) in my lifetime,I consider myinduction into theFresh Water FishingHall Of Fame as aLegendary Angler asmy highest achievement. It is truly anhonor to be thought of that highly by mypeers, and to be spoken of in the samebreath with the many fishing legendsthat have been inducted before me."

"My only regret is that my dad and mygrandfather were not alive to see this(induction) happen. My grandpa got mestarted fishing. I was his fishing buddyfrom a very early age. He was a tough, hardy, gruff kinda soul that worked like adog for everything he got in life. But hesure loved fishing and took me with him(fishing) everywhere. He would havebeen extremely proud for sure.Hopefully, he is looking down on meright now with a smile on his face!"

ishing tackle collections, likemany types of collecting, oftenfocus on specific makers, items

from certain geographies or a particulartype of equipment. Taken to a greaterlevel of specialty, many lure collectorsengage in what is known as colorcollecting.

Color collecting has long been a popularway to enjoy the fishing tackle hobby.Although such collections vary in focus, they very often involve accumulatingmultiple colors of a single model or typeof lure.

In an earlier Ol’ Tackle Talk, I providedsome background on the Creek ChubBait Company, one of the great early20th century tackle makers, and oftenthe manufacturer behind many colorcollections. The reason…Creek Chubproduced a large number of colorvariations and was quiteaccommodating when it came tocustom orders.

Of particular note is the original CreekChub Pikie Minnow or model #700 forthe more seasoned collectors. Firstoffered around 1920, the Pikie was themost prolific of the company’sofferings, and was available in 18cataloged colors and dozens of“special” variations.

As you might imagine, the specials arequite sought after and can be pricey. For perspective, an early #700 in thecommon pike or perch pattern is $10-$15 in excellent condition, where a verygood #700 in the special red horsesucker pattern may bring in excess of$500.

My good friend and fellow collector,John Collen, has been chasing #700Pikies for 15 years and has amassedmore than 100 different color and

pattern variations. John has patientlyassembled one of the largest Pikiecolor collections in the country andfrequently displays his prizes atcollectible and sporting shows. He haskindly provided the photos shared inthis article- please enjoy.

Distinguishing a special color from amore common piece can be tricky.Variations of standard colors andpatterns are not unusual andfrequently cause debate, even withinthe collector community. Should youhave an odd colored lure, please besure to take the time to have it

Can you ID?

The following boxed lure was broughtto me for identification at a recentcollectibles show:

This hard rubber lure and box weremanufactured by the St. CroixRubber Company of Prescott,Wisconsin, probably in mid-1950’s.This “Giant” measures greater than 7inches and is unusual in its size. Thebox is also a very tough find. Thelure alone is $30-$50 and $100-$150in the box.

Please do forward your questions orrequests for identification [email protected]. Alternatively, sendyour queries to Chris Slusar in careof the Fresh Water Fishing Hall ofFame.

Until next time, enjoy an old lure!

Enshrinees Al and Ron Lindner"At whatever level orcategory a person isinducted into theFresh Water FishingHall of Fame there isno question that thisis the peak ofrecognition by one’speers, whateveraccomplish ments an individual has madeto our beloved sport. For both of us tobeing inducted into the Hall is truly aprofound honor."

Legendary Communicator Ron Schara"It's an honor to be inthe Fresh WaterFishing Hall of Fame, but honor isn't easyto explain. It beginsas a boy fishing on aMissis sippi Riverbank who goes on towrite 40 years worthof fishing tales in the Minneapolis StarTribune and then finds himself catchingfish on television screens acrossAmerica.

So, now my love of fishing has beenmemorialized in the Fresh Water FishingHall of Fame. Now that is an honor, myfishing friends."
