INTRODUCTION

The Catalogue of the Interstate Statistical Committee of the CIS is published annually in English and Russian. It includes an overview (list and description) of the statistical publications, which are available for sale in stock and will be published until January 2012, and information on services provided in electronic form. Publications and databases of the Committee comprise information on eleven countries of the CIS: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan. The sources of information presented in the publications and databases are official data of the national statistical services of the CIS countries. The list of indicators presented to the CIS Statcommittee is determined by the Work Programme adopted by the Council of the Heads of Statistical Services of the Commonwealth.

Publications of the CIS Statcommittee cover the following topics:

macroeconomics; finances; investment; external trade; population and living

conditions; industry; agroindustrial

complex; labour market; consumer market; environment; methodology of

statistics. The catalogue consists of 4 sections. In Section 1 “Statistical publications” the reader will find a short description of their contents, periodicity, number of pages, format, ISBN and approximate price. Publications are mainly published in Russian and in English. In Russian publications the preface, annotation and contents are provided also in English.

Section 2 describes the database "Statistics of the CIS" located on the website of the CIS Statcommittee as well as statistical information on CD-ROMs. Database "Statistics of the CIS" contains more than 14800 tables and articles of up-to-date information on the main socio-economic indicators of the Commonwealth countries including monthly, quarterly and annual data as well as analytical materials and reports.

The Interstate Statistical Committee of the CIS offers subscribers special services for receiving basic statistical publications and for direct access to the database "Statistics of the CIS" via Internet. Upon request of the clients customized statistical research can be carried out. Section 3 provides additional information on subscriber services. Order form for subscribers is presented in Section 4.

Beginning from 1996 CD-ROM “Official Statistics of the Countries of the Commonwealh of Independent States” (in Russian and English) is issued regularly. For this edition information base on 24 branches of statistics is formed. It contains more than 3500 socio-economic indicators as well as methodological notes and presentation system for the CIS countries.

The abstract contains systematization of official statistical data on major aspects of economic development submitted by the

statistical services of the CIS countries. These data are compiled in accordance with the concepts, definitions and classifications of the System of National Accounts (SNA) 1993 adopted by the UN Statistical Commission.

The SNA 1993 is a system of interrelated indicators and classifications depicting most important results and aspects of economic process. The data of the SNA are intended for the analysis of the economy at the macro level, preparation of the short- and mid-term economic forecasts, making decisions by the government bodies on formulation of socio-economic policies.

The abstract includes indicators compiled both for the economy as a whole and sectors and industries of the economy. The most important indicators of the SNA presented in the abstract are gross domestic product and its components, gross national income, gross national disposable income, national saving, net lending, net borrowing. Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States jointly with the national statistical services regularly issues methodological documents (recommendations, regulations, conceptions, instructions, etc.) for their dissemination among the wide

circle of users. Some of the methodological elaborations are combined into abstracts.

The first issue (1994) contains methodological explanatory notes on the "Minimum of statistical indicators", determined by the Council of the Heads of Statistical services to secure the common information statistical space in the framework of the Commonwealth.

In the second issue (1996)given are the methodological explanatory notes on the definition of indicators of the common statistical base of the Economic Union, envisaged for interstate statistical information exchange.

The coordinated List of indicators and methodology of their calculations should be specified when necessary.

The third issue (1998) contains methodological explanatory notes on the definition of indicators for interstate statistical information exchange taking into account the needs of Interstate Economic Committee of the Economic Union and consists of two parts:

Part I - List and characteristics of the basic indicators of the common statistical base of the CIS.

Part II - Methodological explanatory notes to the system of indicators for interstate exchange.

The methodology of these indicators is the result of the analysis of experience accumulated in domestic and world statistical practice and of the recommendations of the international statistical and economic organizations.

Database “Statistics of the CIS” is located in Internet on the website of the CIS Statcommittee. It is safe, effective, rapid and not expensive way of solving problems of dissemination of statistical information about the states - participants of the Commonwealth of Independent States for users. Documentary principle of storage of information is used in the database. The majority of the files are presented in Russian and in English. Information is stored in formats HTML, MS Word, MS Excel. Large documents are stored in the form of zip-archive.

The database contains more than 14800 tables with data on the basis of socio-economic indicators of the CIS countries in the following sections: - current data (monthly and quarterly); - annual data; - reports and analytical materials; - brief results of population censuses; - methodology of statistics; - events, news, information.
