Introduction
The Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services (MSAMHS) Nursing Professional Practice Model (PPM) is symbolic of our journey to enhance nursing development, provide excellence in patient care, whilst reflecting the ideals and values of the MSAMHS nursing workforce. The PPM is the result of extensive consultation and collaboration with our staff.
Our Mission
To provide kind, respectful addiction and mental health nursing care, promoting and enhancing the health and
wellbeing of the community through acceptance, collaboration and hope.
Our Vision
To be recognised leaders in addiction and mental health nursing, providing innovative and evidence-based

Nurses wanted to be guided by the following values. Hope is listed last because our nurses felt this grounded
and underpinned all other values and interactions with colleagues, consumers, their families and community.
• Kindness
• Respect
• Courage
• Compassion
• Honesty
• Integrity
• Hope

Our PPM Schematic
The Meaning of our Professional Practice Model Schematic
The design of the PPM schematic is representative of all the key elements nurses at Metro South Addiction
and Mental Health Services (MSAMHS) said were integral to nursing practice. It identifies the values and
components that enable person-centred care and recovery-oriented practice and identifies what makes
Addiction and Mental Health Nursing different from other areas of care across the service.
The words encircled in the purple outer circle represent the values held by MSAMHS’ nurses. These values
are recognised as the building blocks to addiction and mental health nursing and inform our practice with
patients and the way we relate to one another as part of a team.
The components in the blue circle represent the five key elements that provide structure to our practice and
create a positive environment where both our patients and staff can participate, thrive and develop.
The central design depicts:
• The Hope man illustrates person-centred care.
• The leaves represent the capacity for growth and the importance of a connection to loved ones and
community.
• The foundation of HOPE is essential to our practice and our patients’ journey to healing and recovery.
• Acknowledging the courage and use of self (as a therapeutic tool) is fundamental in addiction and mental
health (AMH) nursing.
The colours used are a representation of growth, creativity, autonomy, harmony and hope across all cultures.

Element 1: Positive Patient Experience
Concepts:
• AMH nurses respect the individual and their choices
• AMH nurses work in partnership with consumers, carers, family and community
• AMH nurses hold hope for recovery and advocate for the rights of their patients
• AMH nurses use self as a therapeutic tool
• AMH nurses acknowledge and value diversity and inclusion
The patient experience is central to all that (AMH) nurses’ do. Engagement with each person is respectful of
the individual, their choices and expectations of health care. AMH nurses work in partnership to hold hope and
understand the significance of connections to family and community. AMH Nurses’ use of self as a therapeutic
tool supports self-reflection and growth. This holds space for people to believe in themselves through their
recovery journey. AMH nurses strive to deliver care that demonstrates integrity, compassion, accountability,
respect, engagement and excellence.
Element 2: Shared Decision Making – taking a leadership approach
Concepts:
• AMH nurses have an equal voice that is valued within the multidisciplinary team
• AMH nurses demonstrate accountability and leadership at all layers
AMH nurses can create an environment to support and empower nurses
• AMH nurses believe empowerment is achieved through shared decision making
• AMH nurses value the lived experience, noting patients as experts in their own recovery
Nursing involvement in shared decision making is valued and AMH nurses have an equal voice in influencing
patient care. Nurses are encouraged to lead nursing and inter-professional opportunities through participation
and encourage others to reach their potential. AMH nurse’s role model shared decision making in partnering
with consumers and interprofessional colleagues. This is supported by collaboration, communication and
acknowledging the patient as the expert in their own recovery.
Element 3: Interprofessional Relationships – nurses independent and collaborative practice
Concepts:
• AMH nurses value agency, autonomous practice and professional accountability
• AMH nurses believe nursing practice is enhanced through speciality skills and scope of practice
• AMH nurses believe best patient outcomes are achieved through commitment to collaboration,
effective communication and teamwork
• AMH nurses’ value shared learning, personal and professional growth
Nurses practice both independently and collaboratively to enhance the patient experience. Every team member is recognised as being important to person centred care. Nurses work collaboratively by building relationships which are underpinned by respectful and effective communication. AMH nurses value the ability to work both autonomously and within a team framework. Personal and professional growth is achieved through shared learning and self-reflection. Patients benefit positively from enhanced working relationships.

Element 4: Development, Recognition and Reward
Concepts:
• AMH nurses recognise that job satisfaction is based on intrinsic and extrinsic factors / clinical
supervision / self-care considerations, individual attitudes and beliefs
• AMH nurses understand the importance of professional growth and value lifelong learning
• AMH nurses recognise that informal and formal recognition is linked to nurses feeling valued and
quality outcomes
• AMH nurses understand a culture of nursing excellence, acknowledges the experience nurses hold
within the service
Ongoing professional development, recognition and reward is promoted within MSAMHS nursing. The PPM
serves as a framework for building and sustaining a positive practice environment where the experience of
nurses is held and valued. Informal and formal recognition of nurses and nursing practice is linked to the
provision of quality patient care outcomes and staff recruitment and retention. AMH nurses recognise these
are all essential components in building a culture of nursing excellence.
Element 5: Practice Environment- patient care delivery systems
Concepts:
AMH nurses value a culture of quality and safety, and believe this is underpinned by:
• Evidence based practice
• Delivery of care (timely, accessible, equitable, affordable, acceptable)
• Flexibility to work practices / staffing and resource adequacy to meet patients’ needs
• Acknowledgement of individual contributions to the culture of the practice environment
The practice environment promotes a safe and healthy workplace where team function flourishes and the
patient and staff experiences are enhanced. Standards of practice guide and enable AMH nurses to work to
their full scope and potential. AMH nurses understand that positive contributions to the practice environment
are linked to the retention of nurses and enhance the quality of the nurse patient relationship.
