MONROE COUNTY BRIEF Published for the Monroe County Bar Association
My year as President of the Monroe County Bar Association has passed all too quickly. Most of that time was spent working with Denise and the Board to create, update and restructure the policies and procedures concerning the operation of the Bar Center and the MCBA generally. The most recent of these changes involved merging two part-time staff positions into a single, full-time position to better serve the needs of the Association. Sadly, this means that Lesliegh Pope and Rosalie Richardson will be leaving the MCBA after many years. We recently honored the life and career of Attorney Maxwell Cohen who passed away on August 29, 2012. Although Attorney Cohen had not been actively practicing for the last 20 years, his legacy has remained with our Association, most notably in his son, Attorney Barry Cohen. Thank you to the Memorial Committee of Samuel W. Newman, George Royle, IV and George W. Westervelt, Jr. for preparing the Memorial Resolution honoring Maxwell Cohen. The end of my term brings with it a transition to the new MCBA Officers. I look forward to that most coveted position as Immediate Past President with the knowledge that Jane Maughan will be taking over as President with the help of a very competent Board which will now include Timothy McManus, Esquire as a new Member At Large. In light of the
President’s Message
This year the MCBF has contributed to more causes than ever. It seems that every
organization is in need in this economy. Unfortunately, we have more requests than
resources and it is more important than ever that we all pitch in to make a contribution to
our Foundation. Our funds are used locally and the recipients are always more than grateful
for whatever we can give. I am pleased that more and more of you choose to make a
donation along with your annual Association dues payment. I would encourage those who
have not yet done so to forward a tax-deductible donation today.

vacancy of the Vice President position, Dan Corveleyn has offered to serve a one year term in that position to assure a full Board. I am confident that this group will demonstrate excellent leadership for the MCBA. Finally, throughout the past year I have attempted to highlight the activities of the Young Lawyers Division. This is due in part to the fact that our YLD has been very energetic and enthusiastic in its efforts. More importantly, in serving on the Board these past years it has become quite clear that the YLD and the future of the MCBA are one and the same. With this in mind my closing request is that the members of this association continue to support, encourage and assist our young lawyers in reaching their professional goals within our legal community. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President.

Mark Primrose Receives First Annual Pro-Bono Award
On November 14, 2012, President Judge Margherita Patti Worthington joined Attorney
David Keller Trevaskis, Pro Bono Coordinator for Pennsylvania Bar Association in
presenting the Pennsylvania Bar Association 2012 Pro Bono Award to Attorney Mark
Primrose. Nominated by Pro-Bono Committee Chairman Jeff Kash, Mark has been an
instrumental member of the committee. Mark continually provides educational
seminars at the conferences, advocates for those in need of pro-bono services and offers
his time and talents frequently. Mark sets the standard for other attorneys, setting an
example of giving to others. The Pro-bono committee congratulates Attorney Primrose
on his award. Thank you for leading the way for all of us.

Excellent programs and guest speakers were the main feature of this year’s Bench Bar
Conference. The action packed day started with breakfast and networking with our
vendors and sponsors and quickly moved onto the sessions covering Cell Phone Forensics,
Workers’ Compensation, Lincoln to Ethics in our Courts, US Supreme Court Round Up
and our Judges Round Table.
We were honored to have many of our appellate judges as presenters and guests. Thank
you to Supreme Court Justice Michael Eakin, The Honorable Correale Stevens, President
Judge, Pennsylvania Superior Court, The Honorable Anne E. Lazarus, Pennsylvania
Superior Court and The Honorable Renee Cohn Jubelirer, Pennsylvania Commonwealth
Court Judge for joining us for the day, imparting their experiences and wisdom on all who attended.
Experts, Caroline Goldner Cinquanto, Esq, and Louis Cinquanto, EnCe, Cornerstone Legal
Consultants LLC, Attorney Charles Becker, Professor Randy Lee and Attorney Daniel R. Schuckers,
Esquire both of Widener University School of Law led sessions as well. Attendee feedback indicated
that the programs were well received and beneficial.
Our sponsors and vendors allowed us to hold the line of the cost this year. Everyone went home with
lots of goodies, and more importantly, new business contacts. I especially want to thank our major
sponsor, National Penn Bank. The cocktail hour was a huge success – if you missed it you missed
good company and great food. It was the perfect ending to the perfect day.
I also want to thank you for your honest input. We are already working to improve key areas, like
audio/visual, the Judges Round Table and comfort level of the conference rooms.
We hope to have record attendance again – watch the calendar and sign up early. Denise
As Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by
what we give.” I wish all of you the happiest of holiday seasons and especially send greetings to our long-
time faithful trustee Alex Bensinger.

Thank you to PA Bar Insurance Fund!! MCBA Receives Grant to Fund Equipment for $2,500. The grant allowed us to purchase a new computer and projector. Both will be utilized for Lunch and Learn programs, PBI seminars as well as various other events. Christine Hall McClure of the PA Bar Insurance Fund in the award letter said, “The Trustees are pleased to assist the Monroe County Bar Association with the ability to purchase this equipment to enhance its CLE programs.” So the next time you attend a Lunch and Learn, take a glance at our new equipment and remember to say “Thanks” to the PA Bar Insurance Fund.

NEW FACES AT MCBA
Taharah Nix has joined the staff of MCBA as Administrative Assistant / Journal Coordinator. Taharah has lived in Stroudsburg for 13 years and is a Stroudsburg High School graduate. She attended Penn State where she earned her B.A. in Journalism with a minor in English. Since graduating from Penn State, Taharah has continued to write for pleasure, mostly poetry and children’s books. She is very excited to be working with the Monroe County Bar Association and is looking forward to meeting everyone and participating in the upcoming events. The Administrative Assistant / Journal Coordinator, Taharah, will be responsible for the Monroe Legal Journal publication. Historically the duties for publishing the journal were split between the two part time employees as well as the executive director. This consolidation will lead to a more efficient process, and more importantly, allow for better service to MCBA / MLR clients, which include members and non-members. Taharah will work closely with Michael Muth, Editor, both legal and commercial advertisers, and the Pocono Record. When Taharah is not working on the Journal, she will be assisting clients with lawyer referrals, working on events and programs for the membership and our committees. Taharah will be very involved with day-to-day administrative functions such as scheduling the conference rooms for depositions, seminars, and meetings, maintaining member files, and creating communications for the membership. She will assist with maintenance of the MCBA website, writing press releases and all special projects such as the pictorial directory. Taharah can be reached at [email protected] or by calling the office at 570.424.7288.
Thanks to yet another grant received by MCBA, we have Frank Ingulli with us as an intern for several months. A graduate of Wallenpaupack High School in 2009 and East Stroudsburg University in December 2012 with a Political Science degree and a concentration Pre-Law studies, Frank is currently applying to law schools. Frank graduated Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.71, was President of ESU’s Pre-Law Society in 2011-2012, a member of the National Honor Society for Political Science and the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success. Additionally he was a student tutor in multiple areas while at ESU. In 2011 Frank interned for a government relations firm in Washington, D.C. Frank is working on a very specific project currently under way, working closely with Victoria Wright, Law Clerk and liaison for The Honorable Judge Margherita Patti Worthington, to begin to create Monroe County’s first “Self-help Library”. Legal areas of focus include name change, expungements, landlord/tenant appeals, protection from abuse orders and driver’s license suspensions just to name a few. In addition to input from the Pro-Bono Committee, Frank has been interviewing key stakeholders in the legal and non-legal community. The objective is to provide access to the forms with instructions to pro se litigants for specific areas wherein individuals will not seek council. This will also, hopefully, alleviate some of the high volume at North Penn Legal Services for pro-bono services. It is never recommended to clients to not obtain representation, but when they cannot or will not, it is hoped that the information available will help them as well as our court system. Roll out of the new program is anticipated to be in late spring. So, if you receive a call from Frank to meet with him, we hope that you will take a few minutes to answer his questions.
Welcome to MCBA Taharah and Frank!
