TEXTBOOKS IN GREEK AND LATIN: 1968 LISTThe following includes Greek and Latin works,

listed separately, as follows: I. Texts (chiefly ofindividual authors); II.a. Beginner's Books (incl.graded series); II.b. Grammar; Metric; etc.; III.Readers; Anthologies; IV. Composition; V. Diction-aries; VI. New Testament Greek (a. Beginner'sBooks; Grammars; b. Dictionaries) and Later Latin.

Texts of authors are, in general, annotatededitions. Bilinguals (e.g., the Loeb Classical Library),interlinears, and series of plain texts (e.g., the Ox-ford Classical Texts), have been omitted. The fewannotated editions which include a translation areidentified by "(w. tr.)," while the presence of avocabulary is indicated ay "(v)," except where thismay be assumed from the nature of the work(Beginner's Books, Composition) or the nature of theseries (see below, Publishers, under 0 and SM).The list is confined to works published in the UnitedStates, Canada, and Great Britain, with auxiliarymaterial in English, except where shown otherwise.

We are happy to have been enabled this year, through the kind cooperation of Mr. Graham I. F.Tingay, King's College School, Wimbledon, London,S.W. 19, to incorporate the British listings in ourown. The overseas list "is intended to be reprintedevery two years, with an intervening supplement."Last year's "A list of editions in print," as we re-ported then, "it is hoped, contains all the annotatededitions of Greek and Latin texts, published in

Great Britain, in print on September 1st 1966. It doesnot include plain texts, simplified versions, or selec-tions with extracts from more than one author, apartfrom a few obvious exceptions." Copies may beobtained, for 3s. post free, from the Joint Associa-tion of Classical Teachers, 31 Gordon Square, Lon-don, W.C. 1, but their stock is nearly depleted. Thisyear's supplement reached us in typed form. It showsadditions, errata, deletions; no price changes.

All the British items listed by us appear in ourGreek and Latin Texts categories (except for one,to be found in the last section). Once again, we haveused exclusively books that are not available fromany American or Canadian source, and we have notadded any British entries to those supplied by Mr.Tingay. His contributions can be readily identifiedvia the British prices. This time, however, we wereauthorized to bring the British data into editorialalignment with our own practices. More completeinformation concerning the presence of vocabularieshas been promised for next year.

Within the above limits, completeness has beenaimed at, in the listing as such, and in the descrip-tive information. As always, the data are as accurateas it was humanly possible to get them. For the sakeof such accuracy, we have removed 12 items of 2publishers who chose not to respond. Conversely, last year's dropouts were given a chance to be re-instated. This time, all seven responded. Comparisonwith the previous list will reveal many changes in

details. Naturally, prices and availability are subjectto change without notice.

Mr. Tingay has furnished as well the addressesof the British publishers. It will be noted that Oxfordis the only supplier to be represented on both sidesof the Atlantic. Their "British" items simply arenot available here (or, in some cazes, have not yetbeen announced here as forthcoming). We deemedit best to use our old "0" symbol for "American"items, "OUP" for the rest. Apart from OUP andUTP, British publishers are identified by full one-word names, not abbreviations. All British booksmay also be ordered from Blackwell's, Broad St.,Oxford, England.

Users of this list are requested to mention it intheir contacts with publishers, and they are advisedto inquire about teachers' discounts. Some publisherscharge postage on orders from individuals.

Readers may wish to familiarize themselves withthe yearly issues of "Textbooks in Print" (basicallythrough Senior High School, and including RelatedTeaching Materials; R. R. Bowker Co., 1180 Ave.of the Americas, N.Y. 10036; $4.00 in U.S.A. andCanada; $4.40 elsewhere; 113 off on 5 min.).

The British "clearing house," to which we re-ferred last year, is in full operation. Under thissystem, publishers inform Mr. Tingay of editions

they have contracted for. When the occasion arises, they are consulted about release of specific data toother publishers. All of them "have so far been re-markably co-operative, and several major clashesand duplications have been avoided." American-Canadian publishers-and educators-will be interest-ed in knowing further that "a number of schooland university teachers were asked to let me knowwhat editions were most urgently needed, and fromtheir answers a short list of 'popular' desiderata wasprepared and is being circulated to publishers withan enquiry whether they are contemplating thepublication of any of these editions. We hope thismay prove a useful exercise."
