Published Writings of Horacio de la Costa, S.J. JOHN N. SCHUMACHER AND

RAFAELITA S. VALERA

This compilation has attempted to include all Father de la Costa's published writings, no matter what their subject or where they have appeared. Only his undergraduate writings in student publications have been purposely omitted. In the beginning it was thought to limit the compilation to scholarly writings, but inas- much as a number of scholarly essays of considerable value ap- peared in popular publications, and on the other hand one can almost always see the scholarly historian at work, even in writings destined for popular consumption, the compilation has not at- tempted to make any distinctions. Though the compilers have tried to make the bibliography as complete as possible, so many of Father de la Costa's writings were reprinted by others, often with only informal permission, it is not unlikely that some reprint of a particular item may have escaped us, particularly since he himself did not leave any complete list of his writings.

The bibliography is chronological by year. Within each year books and pamphlets have been listed first, followed by articles forming parts of books, and finally by articles in periodicals. Within a single year these articles have, as far as possible, likewise been listed in chronological order. Cross-references have been supplied to other publications of the same item, whether exact reprints or, in some cases, abridged versions.
